Campgrounds near Cold Spring, New York
Cold Spring sits on the east bank of the Hudson River in Putnam County, roughly an hour north of New York City by car or train. The village anchors a cluster of state parks in the Hudson Highlands, and RV travelers use it as a base for hiking, river views, and day trips into the Lower Hudson Valley. Most nearby campgrounds are managed either by New York State Parks or by private operators, and options range from rustic tent-and-trailer sites with no hookups to full-service resort parks.
The closest public option is Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park, set inside a preserve of more than 14,000 acres that spans Putnam and Dutchess counties. Beaver Pond Campground sits farther south inside Harriman State Park in Rockland County, adjacent to Lake Welch and about an hour's drive from Cold Spring. Private choices include the New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday across the river in Plattekill, Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc in Dutchess County, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River for family-focused resort camping.
Hookup availability varies widely, so RV renters should confirm electric, water, and dump-station access before booking.
Things to do near Cold Spring
Hiking dominates the outdoor calendar. Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve, immediately outside the village, has steep climbs to Breakneck Ridge and Bull Hill with wide river views, and a stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs through Fahnestock and the Highlands. Fahnestock itself offers over 50 miles of trails plus swimming at Canopus Lake's sandy beach and rowboat and kayak rentals in season.
On the water, campers fish Canopus and Stillwater Lakes and the park's smaller ponds for bass, pickerel, perch, and stocked trout. A New York State fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Metro-North's Hudson Line stops in Cold Spring village, which makes a car-free day trip to Grand Central Terminal or to West Point across the river straightforward from most nearby campgrounds.

The main state-park camping season in this area runs roughly mid-spring through mid-fall. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock has historically opened in early May and closed in mid-October, and the park has announced that the campground is closed for the 2026 season to allow construction of a new bathhouse, so RV renters should confirm status directly with the park before planning around it. The group wilderness camping area remains open for 2026. Beaver Pond at Harriman typically opens in mid-April for a walk-in period and switches to full reservation operation from early May through mid-October.
Summer weekends and holidays fill fastest, especially at lakefront and beach-adjacent sites. Fall brings peak foliage from late September into mid-October and is one of the busiest times for the Hudson Valley overall.
Winter closes most local campgrounds, though Fahnestock Winter Park operates groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails and a sledding area on cold, snowy days.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book campgrounds near Cold Spring
New York State Park campgrounds, including Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock and Beaver Pond at Harriman, use the ReserveAmerica platform. Reservations can be made online or by calling the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and the booking window extends up to nine months in advance for campsites. Same-day reservations are accepted until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
One-night stays can be booked online within three days of arrival. Private parks such as the New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday, Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River book directly through their own websites or call centers, each with its own cancellation windows and deposit rules.
What to expect on site
State-park sites in this region tend to be rustic. Pelton Pond has no electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites, and there is no dump station in the park. Beaver Pond likewise has no electrical hookups, though it does have full-service comfort stations with showers, laundry facilities, and a dump station, and select sites accommodate trailers or RVs up to 30 feet. Each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring with a flip-top grill.
Policies differ. Pets and alcohol are not permitted at Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch. Fahnestock allows a maximum of two leashed pets in campsites and day-use areas. Private parks like the Newburgh KOA carry full hookups, larger pull-through sites, pools, and family programming, and generally accept pets in designated areas.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Cold Spring, NY?
An RV rental in Cold Spring is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Hudson Valley. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run $125 to $200, and larger Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300 nightly. Weekday bookings and shoulder-season trips in April or late October offer the best deals. For a cheap RV rental in Cold Spring, filter by travel trailers with delivery included to skip the gas burn of driving a big rig along Route 9D. Many hosts also offer weekly discounts, so a 5-night Hudson Highlands getaway can cost less than a weekend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cold%20Spring%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Cold Spring, NY?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Cold Spring. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. Approved renters on RVezy are generally 25 or older and complete a quick ID verification at checkout. Visiting from overseas? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most renters are booked and verified in under 15 minutes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Cold Spring protected if something goes wrong?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Taconic State Parkway with confidence. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level (not the host) during checkout. Roadside help is just a phone call away whether you're at Clarence Fahnestock State Park or pulled over on Route 9. The combination of coverage and around-the-clock support gives Cold Spring renters real peace of mind, especially for a first time renting an RV.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy for an RV rental in Cold Spring?
You can book your Cold Spring RV trip with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and the refund amount depends on how close you are to your trip start date. If a host cancels, guests receive a refund or credits. To review your options, open your RVezy dashboard, select your booking, and you'll see your refund details clearly. This consistent, platform-wide policy makes it easier to plan a Hudson Valley trip knowing the rules upfront.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip in Cold Spring?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Cold Spring is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see listings with hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Cold Spring is one of the most dog-friendly towns in the Hudson Valley: leashed dogs are welcome on trails at Hudson Highlands State Park, along the Cold Spring waterfront, and at many Main Street patios. Dogs are also allowed on most trails at Clarence Fahnestock State Park. Bring a long leash, plenty of water, and tick prevention. Message your host before booking if you have a large breed or more than two pets.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestockCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Cold Spring?
Yes, RV delivery in Cold Spring is one of the smartest options for first-timers, especially since Route 9D's winding river road can be intimidating in a big rig. Many RVezy hosts in the Hudson Valley deliver directly to Clarence Fahnestock State Park's Canopus Lake Beach Campground or to private properties in Putnam and Dutchess County. Your host will set up the trailer, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your campsite details.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestockHow far can I drive on a Cold Spring RV trip?
You have incredible range from Cold Spring, and many hosts offer generous or even unlimited mileage packages. From Cold Spring you can reach the Catskills (about 90 miles northwest), Lake George (about 165 miles north), Cape Cod (about 240 miles east), Niagara Falls (about 370 miles), or Acadia National Park (about 450 miles) on a longer RV road trip from Cold Spring. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with additional miles at $0.30 to $0.50 each. For an RV rental with unlimited mileage, use the RVezy filter or message hosts directly. Important: the Taconic State Parkway bans commercial vehicles and trailers, so stick to I-84 or US-9 with larger rigs.
dot.ny.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Cold Spring, NY?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Cold Spring. The closest is Clarence Fahnestock State Park's Canopus Lake Beach Campground, just east of town with electric sites and a swimming beach. Mills Norrie State Park in Staatsburg (about 30 miles north) offers Hudson River views and RV-friendly sites. Sebago Cabin Camp and Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park (about 35 miles south) are family favorites. For full hookups, try Interlake RV Park in Rhinebeck or Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY. Book New York State Parks through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance, summer weekends fill up quickly.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time to visit Cold Spring in an RV?
Cold Spring is a four-season destination, but late September through late October is the standout window: the Hudson Highlands turn red and gold, daytime highs sit around 55 to 70°F, and the views from Breakneck Ridge are spectacular. May and June are also excellent, with wildflowers, 65 to 80°F days, and fewer crowds. July and August are warm (80 to 88°F) and humid, great for swimming at Fahnestock's Canopus Lake. Winter RVing (December to February) is possible with a four-season rig, expect 25 to 40°F highs and occasional snow. Insider tip: book fall foliage trips by mid-summer, October weekends in Cold Spring are the busiest of the year.
weather.gov/okx/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Cold Spring?
Yes, and Cold Spring is a fantastic place for your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through propane, water, electric, slide-outs, and dump procedures until you feel confident. You can also message your host before booking with any questions. For driving, stick to US-9 and I-84 with larger rigs and avoid the Taconic State Parkway (it prohibits trailers) and the tight, historic streets of Cold Spring's Main Street. Booking a travel trailer with delivery removes driving stress entirely, your host parks and levels it for you. RVezy support is also available throughout your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180693-RentersWhat if I have a breakdown or roadside issue during my trip?
You're covered: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, no extra fee required. If you get a flat on Route 9D, run out of fuel near Garrison, or your battery dies at Fahnestock, just call the number in your trip confirmation and help is dispatched to your location. The service covers towing, jump starts, tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery. Your host is also typically a quick text away for RV-specific quirks. Cold Spring and the Hudson Valley have strong cell coverage on all major roads. Tip: snap a photo of the propane shutoff and dump valves at orientation, it makes any roadside call faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Cold Spring RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is standard. From Cold Spring you can road trip to Vermont's Green Mountains (about 3 hours), the Berkshires in Massachusetts (about 90 minutes), New Hampshire's White Mountains (about 5 hours), or Washington DC (about 5 hours). Travel into Canada (Montreal is about 6 hours north) is allowed with many hosts as long as the protection plan extends there, confirm with your host and select the appropriate coverage during booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Tip: heading to Acadia or the Maine coast? Allow extra time, the I-95 corridor through Connecticut is slow on summer Fridays.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on my Hudson Valley RV trip?
Budgeting fuel is straightforward. New York gas prices in the Cold Spring area typically run around $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon for regular and $3.80 to $4.30 for diesel. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but reduce your tow vehicle's MPG to roughly 10 to 14. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 MPG and Class B campervans are more efficient at 16 to 20 MPG. For a 4-day, 300-mile loop through the Hudson Highlands and Catskills, budget around $90 to $150 in fuel for most rigs. Fill up before crossing into Connecticut, where prices typically jump.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Cold Spring?
Book early. The Hudson Valley is one of the Northeast's most popular RV destinations. New York State Parks (including Fahnestock and Mills Norrie) open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and summer weekends plus October dates fill up quickly. For July, August, and fall foliage, book 6 to 9 months out. Private parks like Interlake and Black Bear Campground typically need 2 to 4 months for peak weekends. Midweek and shoulder season (April, May, early November) you can often book a few weeks out. Tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 9 months before your target Saturday morning when the best Fahnestock sites become available.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Cold Spring?
Cold Spring driving is scenic but requires awareness in a motorhome rental in Cold Spring. Route 9D between Cold Spring and Beacon is narrow, winding, and hugs the Hudson River, take it slow with anything over 24 feet. The Taconic State Parkway is closed to all trailers and commercial vehicles by law, use I-84 or US-9 instead. Larger Class A rigs should cross the Hudson at the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge on I-84 rather than the older Bear Mountain Bridge approach. Winter brings occasional snow and black ice from December to March. Summer weekends see heavy hiker traffic at Breakneck Ridge, arrive before 9 a.m. or after 3 p.m. to avoid the crunch.
dot.ny.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Cold Spring?
Hudson Valley campgrounds range from rustic to resort-style. Clarence Fahnestock State Park offers electric hookups, hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station, and a swimming beach on Canopus Lake, but no water or sewer at sites. Mills Norrie has similar amenities with Hudson River views. For full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site), Interlake RV Park in Rhinebeck and Black Bear Campground both deliver, plus pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi. The closest public dump station to Cold Spring is at Fahnestock. Tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter, they cover most Hudson Valley hookup situations.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestockWhat features come with a typical RV rental in Cold Spring?
Cold Spring RV rentals come well-equipped for Hudson Valley adventures. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on size, climate control with both furnace and air conditioning (essential for humid August nights), and seatbelted seats for travel. Many rigs include a TV, some have Wi-Fi hotspots or Starlink as a host add-on, and generators are common on Class C motorhomes. Campervan rentals in Cold Spring tend to be more minimal but extremely maneuverable for Main Street's tight parking. Linens, kitchen kits, camp chairs, and outdoor mats are popular add-ons. Tip: ask your host for a fire pit, fall evenings on the Hudson are made for s'mores.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cold%20Spring%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Cold Spring offer flexible options to make your trip seamless. Popular add-ons include bedding packages, kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, kayaks, and outdoor furniture. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Putnam, Dutchess, or Westchester County, with many offering delivery to Fahnestock, your driveway, or a Hudson Valley rental property. Most listings offer 100 to 150 free miles per night with overages at $0.30 to $0.50 per mile, and unlimited-mile rentals exist too. One-way trips are possible on some listings, message the host first. Tip: book delivery and a generator together if you're camping at Fahnestock's non-electric sites, you'll have full comfort without a single hookup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cold%20Spring%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. RVezy handles everything through the platform, so you'll never pay your host directly in cash. You'll pay the booking amount (rental, fees, protection plan) by credit card at the time of booking, and a refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before your trip starts. Deposit amounts vary by RV and are listed on each listing. The hold is released after your trip ends, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. Tip: take dated photos of the interior, exterior, and tanks at both pickup and drop-off, it's the single best habit for a smooth deposit return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I RV in Cold Spring during winter?
Yes, winter RVing in Cold Spring is a quiet, beautiful experience if you choose the right rig. Look for four-season RVs on RVezy with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and strong furnaces, message hosts to confirm before booking. Clarence Fahnestock State Park campground closes for the winter season, but private parks like Black Bear Campground stay open year-round. Expect daytime temps of 25 to 40°F from December through February, with occasional snow that the New York State DOT clears quickly on I-84 and US-9. Frosty mornings at the Cold Spring waterfront with West Point across the river are unbeatable. Tip: keep a small space heater on shore power to save propane, and book a host who provides extra propane refills.
weather.gov/okx/What are the best RV road trip routes from Cold Spring?
You're perfectly positioned for an epic RV road trip from Cold Spring. The classic Hudson Valley loop runs north on US-9 through Beacon, Rhinebeck, and Hyde Park (FDR Home, Vanderbilt Mansion), about 60 miles of orchards and historic estates. The Catskills loop heads west across the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge to Woodstock, Phoenicia, and the Ashokan Reservoir (about 90 miles). For a longer family RV trip from Cold Spring, swing through the Berkshires to Tanglewood (about 90 minutes) or up to Lake George (about 3 hours) for full Adirondack lake life. Foodies should detour to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, just 30 minutes north. Tip: avoid I-87 Friday afternoons heading north, locals leave by 11 a.m. or after 8 p.m.
