Cornwall-on-Hudson camping overview
Cornwall-on-Hudson sits on the west bank of the Hudson River in Orange County, just north of the Hudson Highlands and roughly an hour's drive from New York City. The town works well as an RV base for exploring Storm King, Bear Mountain, Harriman, and Fahnestock, with highway access via US-9W, I-87, and the Palisades Interstate Parkway.
RV-friendly camping in the area is a mix of large state park campgrounds and private resorts. State-run options include Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park to the east across the river, and Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park to the south. Private options nearby include New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Lazy River, and Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc.
State park sites tend to be wooded and rustic, while the KOA and Jellystone parks lean toward full hookups and family amenities. Travelers should check rig-length limits and hookup availability before booking, since some state sites cap RV length and lack electric service.
Things to do near Cornwall-on-Hudson
The Hudson Highlands drive most of the outdoor activity. Storm King State Park and Schunemunk Mountain offer day hikes with river views, and the Appalachian Trail crosses nearby at Bear Mountain. Harriman State Park adds an extensive trail network and multiple lakes, giving RV travelers a large set of trailheads within a short drive.
For families, Storm King Art Center is a short drive from town, and West Point sits directly across the river. Fahnestock adds swimming and paddling: Canopus Lake is a popular spot for swimming during the summer months with a sandy beach and designated swimming areas, and rowboats and kayaks are available for rent.
Fishing is productive across Hudson Highlands lakes for bass, pickerel, perch, and trout, with a New York State DEC freshwater license required.

Camping in this part of the Hudson Valley is a warm-season activity. Beaver Pond in Harriman typically runs from mid-to-late April through mid-October, with walk-in only camping in the earliest weeks and full reservations available from early May through the second week of October.
Fahnestock's Pelton Pond campground normally runs a similar spring-to-fall window, but travelers should note that the campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate construction of a new bathhouse. Private parks such as the Newburgh KOA and the Jellystone resort typically open earlier and stay open later than the state parks.
Summer weekends and fall-foliage weekends draw the heaviest demand, and foliage traffic peaks in mid-October. Winter closes state park campgrounds in the region, though nearby Harriman lakes may support ice fishing when conditions allow. Visitors planning shoulder-season trips should confirm current dates directly with each park before travel.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book campgrounds near Cornwall-on-Hudson
New York state park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond and Fahnestock's Pelton Pond, book through ReserveAmerica. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites, and reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267. Camping reservations can be made up to nine months in advance, so summer and foliage weekends are worth booking as soon as the window opens.
Private parks such as New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Lazy River, and Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc take reservations directly through their own websites. Holiday weekends at family resorts often require multi-night minimum stays.
What to expect on the ground
State park campgrounds in this region are rustic by design. Beaver Pond offers campsites, some with a raised platform, for up to two tents and six persons per site; select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet long, and each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill, with shared full-service bathrooms centrally located. There are no electrical hookups for trailers at this campground, alcohol is not permitted, and pets are not permitted, which surprises many first-time visitors. A dump station is available on site.
Fahnestock's Pelton Pond area is wooded and quiet when open, with pond-loop trails accessible from the sites. Private parks in Newburgh and the surrounding towns run closer to a resort model, with hookups, pools, playgrounds, and organized activities suited to families.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cornwall-on-Hudson,%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Cornwall-on-Hudson?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Cornwall-on-Hudson. New York does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers in the size range you'll find on RVezy. To rent an RV in Cornwall-on-Hudson, you generally need to be 25 or older and verify your ID through the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly in. Most first-timers are surprised how simple it is: you book, verify, and your host handles the walkthrough at pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Cornwall-on-Hudson RV rental?
Every RV rental in Cornwall-on-Hudson booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the Hudson Highlands instead of the fine print. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, giving first-time renters real peace of mind whether you're parked at a campground or cruising up Route 9W. During checkout you'll choose from multiple protection tiers set by RVezy, so you select the level of coverage that fits your comfort zone. Pro tip: review your tier details before pickup so you know exactly what's covered before heading out to West Point or Storm King.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Cornwall-on-Hudson RV trip?
Life happens, and RVezy makes cancellations clear. Every booking is backed by an RVezy cancellation policy set by RVezy (not the host), which includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that window, refund amounts depend on how far out from your trip you cancel, with additional consideration for extraordinary circumstances. That matters in the Hudson Valley, where nor'easters and remnants of tropical storms occasionally pass through. Full details are in your booking confirmation and on the RVezy Help Center. Pro tip: book early to secure the grace period, then finalize your campground reservations at Bear Mountain or Beaver Pond once your plans are firm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Cornwall-on-Hudson RV trip?
Yes, and the Hudson Highlands are a dream for dog lovers. Many hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Cornwall-on-Hudson: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see them instantly. Once you're on the road, your dog will love the leashed trails at Storm King State Park, the carriage roads at Black Rock Forest just minutes from town, and the riverside paths at Donahue Memorial Park right in the village. Bear Mountain State Park also welcomes leashed dogs on most trails (not inside the zoo or pool areas). Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed, it speeds up confirmation and some hosts waive cleaning surcharges for well-behaved pets.
parks.ny.gov/parks/188/details.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or rental property?
Yes, RV delivery in Cornwall-on-Hudson is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's ideal if you're flying into Stewart International Airport (SWF) in nearby New Windsor or staying with family in Newburgh. Many local hosts will drive the RV directly to your campground at Bear Mountain, Harriman State Park, or a private park like Newburgh KOA, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no stress about backing into a tight site or wrestling with the awning. Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer it. Pro tip: delivery fees usually scale with distance, so booking a host based in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New Windsor, or Highland Falls keeps costs lowest.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cornwall-on-Hudson,%20New%20YorkHow far can I drive on my Cornwall-on-Hudson RV trip?
Cornwall-on-Hudson sits in a sweet spot for road-tripping, and many hosts offer generous daily mileage allowances (often 100 to 150 miles per day, with some listings offering RV rental with unlimited mileage on weekly bookings). From here, the Catskills are about 60 miles north, the Adirondacks roughly 175 miles, Niagara Falls about 350 miles, and the Finger Lakes around 200 miles west. New York City is just 60 miles south for a quick urban detour. Each listing shows the mileage policy clearly, and you can message the host to discuss extra miles for a longer Hudson Valley RV trip. Pro tip: if you're planning an RV road trip from Cornwall-on-Hudson up to Lake Placid, ask about a weekly rate, the bundled miles usually beat per-mile add-ons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cornwall-on-Hudson,%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Cornwall-on-Hudson?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Cornwall-on-Hudson include Beaver Pond Campground inside Harriman State Park (about 20 miles south, with electric sites and lake swimming), Newburgh KOA in Plattekill (about 25 miles north, with full hookups and a pool), Interlake RV Park in Rhinebeck (about an hour north, big-rig friendly with cable and Wi-Fi), and Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY (about 30 minutes west, with full hookups and family activities). All offer RV-suitable sites and dump stations. Pro tip: New York State Parks campgrounds book through ReserveAmerica and open reservations nine months in advance, so set a calendar alert if you want a summer weekend at Beaver Pond.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time to visit Cornwall-on-Hudson in an RV?
Cornwall-on-Hudson shines from mid-April through late October, with each window offering something different. Spring (April to May) brings 55 to 70 F days, blooming dogwoods at Storm King Art Center, and quieter campgrounds. Summer (June to August) runs warm and humid, 75 to 88 F, ideal for swimming at Lake Tiorati in Harriman. The crown jewel is fall foliage from late September through mid-October, when sugar maples along the Hudson light up and temperatures sit at a comfortable 50 to 68 F. Winters get cold (often 20 to 35 F with snow), so most public campgrounds close November through March. Pro tip: book your fall foliage RV camping in Cornwall-on-Hudson by July, peak weekends sell out months in advance.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Hudson Highlands?
You've got this. First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially around Cornwall-on-Hudson. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, slide-outs, water systems, generator, and dumping, and you can text or call them during your trip. The main routes around town (Route 9W, the New York State Thruway/I-87, and Route 17) all handle motorhomes comfortably. Avoid the narrow Storm King Highway (Route 218) with a tall Class A, and note that the Palisades Interstate Parkway prohibits commercial vehicles and most large RVs. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome rental in Cornwall-on-Hudson for your first trip, they drive much like a large van and park almost anywhere.
dot.ny.gov/What if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never alone out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire near Bear Mountain or a stubborn slide-out at Beaver Pond Campground, help is one phone call away. Your host is also typically reachable by message or phone for quick questions about the rig's quirks (every RV has a few). RVezy's customer support team backs you up before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap photos of the propane shutoff, breaker panel, and water valves during your pickup walkthrough, having those references turns most troubleshooting into a five-minute fix.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Cornwall-on-Hudson RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most hosts welcome interstate travel, which makes Cornwall-on-Hudson a great launchpad for a multi-state RV road trip. Popular routes head to Vermont's Green Mountains (about 3 hours north), New Hampshire's White Mountains (around 5 hours), Acadia National Park in Maine (roughly 8 hours), and Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains (about 90 minutes southwest). Cross-border travel into Canada depends on the host and the protection coverage, so message the listing before booking to confirm and arrange any paperwork. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a classic loop from here is Cornwall-on-Hudson to Lake George to Burlington and back, about 500 miles of waterfront views that make a great 5-day itinerary.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for around Cornwall-on-Hudson?
Budgeting for fuel is easier than you'd think. Class B campervans get about 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 MPG, and trucks pulling travel trailers 9 to 14 MPG. New York gas prices typically run a bit above the national average in Orange County, and diesel a touch higher. For a 3-day local loop covering Bear Mountain, Storm King, and West Point (about 120 miles total), expect roughly $40 to $80 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fuel up at the Costco in Newburgh or larger stations along Route 17K, the smaller in-town stations near Cornwall-on-Hudson tend to be pricier and tighter to maneuver.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Cornwall-on-Hudson?
For New York State Park campgrounds like Beaver Pond at Harriman or Sebago Cabins, reservations open nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and summer weekends often book within hours of opening. For private parks like Newburgh KOA or Interlake RV Park, 2 to 4 months ahead is usually plenty, though fall foliage weekends fill up by midsummer. If you're booking last minute, midweek stays (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have openings. Pro tip: pair an RV rental in Cornwall-on-Hudson NY with a Tuesday-to-Thursday Harriman stay, you'll get your pick of lakeside sites at Beaver Pond plus quieter trails, all about 25 minutes from your pickup point.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around Cornwall-on-Hudson?
Driving around Cornwall-on-Hudson is mostly straightforward and very scenic. Route 9W and Route 218 offer classic Hudson River views, while the New York State Thruway (I-87) handles longer trips north and south. A few key notes: Storm King Highway (Route 218) is gorgeous but narrow and twisty, better suited to a campervan rental in Cornwall-on-Hudson than a 35-foot Class A; the Bear Mountain Bridge has lane width restrictions, so check your RV dimensions; and the Palisades Interstate Parkway prohibits commercial vehicles and most large RVs entirely. Winter storms can bring black ice from December through March. Pro tip: build your route on Google Maps with the RV's height and length in mind, and prefer Thruway and Route 9W corridors for the smoothest drive.
dot.ny.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Cornwall-on-Hudson?
Hudson Valley campgrounds offer a strong mix of amenities for RV camping in Cornwall-on-Hudson trips. Most private parks (Newburgh KOA, Interlake, Black Bear Campground) provide full hookups, 30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, dump stations, and pools. State parks like Harriman's Beaver Pond have electric and water hookups plus a centralized dump station, but no sewer at individual sites. Potable water fills are available at every campground entrance. Most campgrounds sell firewood on-site (New York requires locally sourced wood to protect against invasive pests). Pro tip: if you're heading to a state park, top off fresh water before arriving and empty tanks at the dump station on your way out, simpler than backing into a service site.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What features and equipment will my Cornwall-on-Hudson RV rental have?
Most RVs on RVezy come fully equipped and trip-ready. Expect comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 (queen beds, bunks, convertible dinettes), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a full bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many listings include a TV, some have generators or solar setups, and Wi-Fi hotspots are increasingly common, helpful in the spottier cell zones around Storm King and Harriman. Listings spell out every amenity with photos. Pro tip: for a family RV trip Cornwall-on-Hudson families love, filter by sleeping capacity and bunk beds, then message the host with the ages of your kids so they can suggest the best layout.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cornwall-on-Hudson,%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Cornwall-on-Hudson RV rental?
Hosts in the Cornwall-on-Hudson area offer genuinely useful add-ons that make life easier. Common extras include linen and bedding packages, kitchen kits with cookware and dishes, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generators or extra propane, bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards for the Hudson River, and pet packages with bowls and bedding. Many hosts offer delivery and setup as an add-on (popular for Bear Mountain and Harriman stays), and some include pre-stocked firewood. Mileage policies and per-mile overage fees are listed clearly on each listing. Pro tip: bundling delivery, linens, and a kitchen kit often costs less than buying each separately, and it means you arrive at your campsite ready to grill instead of unpacking gear.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cornwall-on-Hudson,%20New%20YorkHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: when you book your motorhome rental in Cornwall-on-Hudson, RVezy charges your credit or debit card through the platform, no cash or off-platform transfers needed. The host sets a refundable security deposit (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig), which is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the trip assuming no damage or policy violations. Keeping everything in-app protects both you and the host. Pro tip: do a thorough joint walk-around at pickup and dropoff, take date-stamped photos and videos of the exterior, interior, and odometer, that simple 10-minute habit is the single best way to ensure your full security deposit comes back quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in winter near Cornwall-on-Hudson?
Yes, winter RV adventures are possible in the Hudson Valley and can be magical: think snow-dusted Storm King sculptures and crackling campfires at Black Bear Campground (open year-round). Look for listings labeled four-season or winter-ready, with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore power capability. Most Cornwall-on-Hudson winters bring 20 to 35 F days with occasional dips into the teens and meaningful seasonal snow, so you'll want a rig built for it. Many state park campgrounds close from November through April, so plan around private parks with winter hookups. Pro tip: ask the host for a quick demo on the furnace, tank heaters, and antifreeze use during your walkthrough, 10 minutes of prep keeps your pipes happy at 15 F.
