Camping near East Nassau, New York
East Nassau sits in eastern Rensselaer County, tucked into the Taconic Valley where New York meets the Berkshires of Massachusetts and southern Vermont. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of state parks, state forests, and family-run campgrounds on both sides of the state line, with Albany, Troy, and Pittsfield all reachable in under an hour.
Options close to town include Alps Family Campground Inc, a full-hookup RV and tent park on Route 43 between Averill Park and Stephentown in the eastern Capital District, roughly 17 miles east of Albany and 13 miles south of Troy. To the south, Spacious Skies Woodland Hills in Austerlitz offers larger-rig sites, cabins, and on-site recreation.
For public-land camping, Cherry Plain State Park lies just north, set on 175 acres in the woods of the Taconic Valley along Black River Pond, with a sandy beach, boat launch, and adjacent picnic grounds. Across the Massachusetts line, Parker Brook at Pittsfield State Forest and the smaller Privacy Campground add rustic and semi-primitive options within a short drive.
Things to do around East Nassau
Water-based activities anchor most trips. At Cherry Plain State Park, rowboats and paddle boats are available for rental at Black River Pond, and the surrounding woodland offers bridle paths and multi-use trails suitable for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing in winter. Anglers can target bass, bullheads, and pickerel in the pond, and designated areas are open to hunters in season.
Hiking is strong on both sides of the state line. Pittsfield State Forest covers about 11,000 acres and is home to Berry Pond, one of the highest natural water bodies in Massachusetts at 2,150 feet, with wild azalea fields that bloom pink in early June and roughly 30 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing.
Families staying at Alps Family Campground Inc or Spacious Skies Woodland Hills also have on-site pools or ponds, playgrounds, and weekend activities, plus easy day trips to Grafton Lakes State Park, Jiminy Peak, and Tanglewood.

The camping season in this corner of eastern New York runs roughly from mid-May through mid-October, with a short, intense summer peak. Cherry Plain State Park camping opens Memorial Day weekend and runs through Labor Day, with day-use access on Fridays and weekends through late June and daily operation from late June through Labor Day. Private parks like Alps Family Campground Inc and Spacious Skies Woodland Hills run a longer window, typically mid-May through mid-October.
Summer weekends fill first, especially around the Fourth of July and Labor Day, when Berkshire cultural events at Tanglewood push demand across Columbia and Rensselaer counties. Weekday arrivals are noticeably easier to book.
Fall is the second peak. Foliage in the region typically peaks in early to mid-October and draws visitors from the New York metropolitan area, Connecticut, and New Jersey. By late October most public campgrounds are closed, and winter access shifts to day-use skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling on state-forest trails.
How to book campgrounds near East Nassau
New York State Parks and Massachusetts DCR sites use separate reservation systems. For Cherry Plain State Park, same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival for campsites, and bookings can be made online through ReserveAmerica or by calling 1-800-456-2267, with the booking window extending up to nine months ahead of arrival.
Parker Brook and other Pittsfield State Forest sites are booked through the Massachusetts DCR system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to four months prior to arrival, must be in the name of the primary occupant, and no walk-in camping is allowed. Bookings with departure dates outside the four-month maximum window cannot be changed or canceled until 18 days after the reservation was made.
Private parks including Alps Family Campground Inc, Spacious Skies Woodland Hills, and Privacy Campground take direct bookings by phone or through their own websites, and generally require advance reservations for summer weekends.
What to expect on-site
Expect a mix of full-hookup private parks and rustic public campgrounds. Private options offer the widest RV amenities: pull-through and back-in sites with water, electric, and sewer, picnic tables and fire rings, plus pools, laundry, hot showers, playgrounds, and activity pavilions. Spacious Skies Woodland Hills has about 190 sites with 20, 30, and 50 amp service and can handle rigs up to roughly 50 feet.
Public sites are more basic. Cherry Plain has 30 total sites: 10 trailer sites, 10 lakeside tent sites, and 10 hike-in tent sites, with modern restrooms, hot showers, picnic tables, and fire rings. Parker Brook is small, with picnic tables, fire rings, and food storage lockers at each site, hot showers and flush toilets in the bathhouse, and space for smaller RVs and pop-ups. Note that Pittsfield State Forest has no electrical hookups and no dump station.
Massachusetts prohibits transporting outside firewood into DCR campgrounds; buy it on-site. Pets are welcome at most parks with proof of rabies vaccination and a leash no longer than six feet.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Nassau%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in East Nassau, NY?
Good news: a standard New York driver's license (or any valid U.S. or Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in East Nassau, NY. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special RV endorsement for motorhomes used recreationally. To book on RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout, so there are no paperwork surprises at pickup. Once verified, you'll meet your host, get a full walkthrough, and roll out toward the Taconic hills.

Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every East Nassau RV trip, not individual hosts, so the rules are consistent and predictable across listings. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, with additional refund options depending on how far out you cancel. You can review the full cancellation policy in the RVezy Help Center before confirming your trip. Pro tip: lock in your dates early to secure the best Capital Region rigs for fall foliage weekends, knowing you have a clear cancellation framework if plans shift.

Absolutely. Pet-friendly RV rental in East Nassau is easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see rigs whose hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Many local owners actively cater to traveling families with pups, since the Capital Region is loaded with leash-friendly trails. Once you arrive, Schodack Island State Park allows pets on most trails and campsites, and the nearby Rensselaer Plateau Alliance preserves welcome leashed dogs on hikes through hemlock forests. Bring a current rabies certificate (New York State Parks require it for overnight stays), a 6-foot leash, and a collapsible water bowl, and your co-pilot is set for the trip.
parks.ny.gov/recreation/pets/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in East Nassau?
Yes, RV delivery in East Nassau is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to your campground, family driveway, or even a trailhead lot, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter to see which listings offer it, and check each host's delivery radius and per-mile fee. Popular drop-off spots include Schodack Island State Park (about 25 minutes west) and Cherry Plain State Park (about 30 minutes north). It's the easiest way to skip towing stress and start your vacation relaxed.

parks.ny.gov/parks/cherryplainWhen is the best time to visit East Nassau for an RV trip?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping East Nassau, with the absolute peak being late September into the second week of October when the Rensselaer Plateau erupts in red, orange, and gold foliage. Summer highs sit comfortably in the upper 70s to mid-80s°F, while nights drop into the 50s and 60s, ideal for campfires. Spring (April-May) brings wildflowers and trout fishing on the Kinderhook Creek, though expect mud-season showers. Winters are cold (highs in the 20s-30s°F with regular snow), but a few hosts rent four-season RVs for ski trips to nearby Jiminy Peak. Local tip: book foliage weekends six to nine months ahead, since New York State Parks releases sites on a 9-month window.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Is East Nassau a good place to start?
It's a great place to start, and you're not on your own. If it's your first time renting an RV, East Nassau's quiet country roads (Routes 20, 66, and 9) are far easier to learn on than congested city corridors, and rural campground driveways give you room to practice backing in. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, generator, water systems, and dumping. You can message your host with questions before booking, and 24/7 roadside assistance plus RVezy's support team are a tap away during the trip. Pro tip: choose a Class C or smaller travel trailer for your first outing and ask the host about delivery so you can skip towing entirely.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RV rental in East Nassau booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're parked at Grafton Lakes State Park or rolling along Route 20. Roadside support handles common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to a service location. For mechanical questions, your host is your first call since they know their rig best, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after the trip if you need extra help. Save both numbers in your phone before you leave the driveway and you'll travel with total peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my East Nassau RV rental to other states or into Canada?
Yes. An RV road trip from East Nassau across state lines is one of the best parts of being in the Capital Region. You're under an hour from Massachusetts (the Berkshires), Vermont (Bennington), and Connecticut, and within a few hours of New Hampshire and the Adirondacks. Cross-border travel into Canada (Montreal is about 215 miles north via I-87) depends on the host and protection coverage, so confirm in messages before booking and bring a valid passport. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Popular interstate routes include East Nassau to Acadia National Park, Maine, and East Nassau to the White Mountains in New Hampshire.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on my East Nassau RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to plan for. Most Class C motorhomes around East Nassau get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans average 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. New York gas prices in the Capital Region typically run about $0.20-$0.40 higher than the national average, so budget around $3.40 to $3.90 per gallon for regular and a bit more for diesel. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop through the Berkshires in a Class C, expect $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Brainard or Nassau at Stewart's Shops before heading into Massachusetts, where fuel is often pricier near tourist corridors.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near East Nassau?
For prime weekends, book early and you'll have your pick. New York State Parks open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, with new sites releasing daily at 8 AM (weekdays, March 15-Labor Day) and 9 AM weekends. Foliage weekends in late September and early October at Cherry Plain, Schodack Island, and Thompson's Lake fill within hours of release. For summer holidays (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day), aim for the 9-month mark; for shoulder-season weekdays you can often book 2-3 weeks out. Private parks like Alps Family Campground and Broken Wheel typically take reservations directly by phone or website. Insider tip: midweek Sunday-Wednesday stays are easier to land and often quieter.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around East Nassau?
Driving an RV around East Nassau is refreshingly low-stress. The area sits along U.S. Route 20 and NY Route 66, both well-maintained two-lane highways through gently rolling farmland on the Rensselaer Plateau. Take it slow on the steeper grades climbing east toward Stephentown and the Massachusetts line, and watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round. Winter (December-March) brings snow and ice, so most RV rentals operate April through November. Avoid the Taconic State Parkway with a motorhome, as the Taconic prohibits commercial vehicles and most RVs. Stick to I-90, Route 20, and Route 9, and you'll have smooth sailing all trip long.
dot.ny.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near East Nassau?
Capital Region campgrounds offer a great mix of amenities. State parks like Schodack Island and Cherry Plain provide 30/50-amp electric hookups, potable water fills, flush toilets, hot showers, and on-site dump stations included with your site fee. Private parks such as Alps Family Campground and Broken Wheel add full sewer hookups, Wi-Fi (variable), laundry, pools, and camp stores. Need to dump or fill water mid-trip? Schodack Island State Park has a public dump station, and most Stewart's Shops along Route 20 sell drinking water and propane refills. Firewood must be sourced locally (New York prohibits moving untreated firewood more than 50 miles) - just buy a bundle at the campground office and you're set.
dec.ny.gov/nature/forests-trees/firewood-restrictionsWhat features and amenities come with an East Nassau RV rental?
You'll be surprised how well-equipped these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in East Nassau, NY comes with a queen or king bed, a dinette and/or sofa that convert to extra sleeping, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, roof AC, furnace, awning, and DOT-approved seatbelts for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, solar panels, and an onboard generator for boondocking. Travel trailers carry similar interiors minus the cab. Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor camp chairs, and bedding packages are common host add-ons. Check each listing's amenities tab before booking, and message the host if you need something specific like a child car seat anchor or a starter kit of dishes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Nassau%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons can I get, and how does pickup and drop-off work?
Most East Nassau hosts make pickup easy and offer fun extras. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, generator hours, bikes, kayaks, camp chairs, fire pits, and propane refills, with exact pricing shown in each listing. Many hosts offer RV delivery in East Nassau for a flat fee plus a per-mile charge, dropping the rig at your campground and setting it up. For self pickup, you'll meet the host at their address, walk through the rig (plan 45 to 60 minutes), sign the departure checklist, and roll out. Drop-off reverses the process: return with the tanks emptied, fuel topped up, and the interior tidy to avoid cleaning fees. Pro tip: book delivery if you don't have a tow vehicle or a place to park the RV before your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=East%20Nassau%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book a campervan rental in East Nassau or any RV on RVezy, you pay the full trip total through the platform with a credit or debit card, with no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, separate from your booking payment, and it is only charged if there is damage or excessive cleaning. Once you return the RV in good condition, the hold is released, typically within a few business days. To avoid deposit issues, do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, follow the host's checkout checklist, and keep your fuel and propane receipts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there cold-weather and winter RV rental options in East Nassau?
Yes, and winter can be a magical time in the Rensselaer Plateau if you're prepared. A handful of East Nassau hosts rent four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, dual-pane windows, and reliable propane furnaces, perfect for ski trips to Jiminy Peak (35 minutes east) or Catamount (45 minutes south). Use RVezy's filters and message hosts directly to confirm winter readiness. Plan to stay at campgrounds with shore power and winterized water, such as Thacher State Park's Thompson's Lake area which remains open year-round. Bring extra propane, a heated drinking-water hose, and tire chains for icy backroads. Local tip: aim for January-February for the best snow and quietest trails, and you'll have the Berkshires nearly to yourself.
