Camping near Farmingdale, New York
Farmingdale sits in central Nassau County on Long Island, roughly halfway between the Great South Bay and Long Island Sound. The town has no campground inside its limits, but RV travelers have practical options within a one-hour drive on both the north and south shores, plus one urban option in Brooklyn.
The closest and most popular choice for families is Heckscher State Park, on the shore of the Great South Bay in East Islip, Suffolk County. Farther east, Wildwood State Park comprises 600 acres of undeveloped hardwood forest, terminating on the high bluff overlooking Long Island Sound, with 2 miles of beach on the Long Island Sound for fishing and swimming.
For barrier-island beach camping, Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island's eastern end is reached by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue. In New York City, Floyd Bennett Field inside Gateway National Recreation Area offers tent and RV sites on Jamaica Bay, and Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City provides a full-hookup option across the harbor from Manhattan.
Things to do near Farmingdale campgrounds
On the south shore, Heckscher State Park is known for water recreation including bay swimming at West Beach, boat launches, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding, with paved multi-use trails winding through the park for hiking and biking. Families gravitate to the playground and the shallow bay swim area.
Fire Island trades convenience for scenery. The Watch Hill campground borders the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, the only federally designated wilderness area in New York State, with ocean beach access and ranger programs in summer.
At Floyd Bennett Field, the grounds hold hiking trails, historic airplane hangars, and a recreation complex with bike rentals, plus access to an outdoor archery range. Wildwood adds 12 miles of marked hiking trails, 2 miles of sandy beach on Long Island Sound, playground, basketball and volleyball courts, and ball fields.

The camping season on Long Island runs roughly from mid-spring through mid-fall. At Wildwood State Park, Loops T, B, and D open in mid-April through mid-October, Loops A, C, and E open from late May through mid-October, and cottages are available from mid-April through mid-October. Heckscher's cottage area operates from late spring through mid-fall, while campsites are seasonal.
Fire Island has a tighter window. Sites are typically available from mid-May through mid-October, and during that period the Watch Hill area offers a visitor center, family campground, ranger-led interpretive programs, a marina, a small convenience store, and a snack bar.
Summer weekends fill quickly at every state park, with Independence Day and Labor Day booking out months in advance. Late May, June, and September are the sweet spots for warm days without full-capacity crowds. Floyd Bennett Field is the outlier: it operates year-round, though winter camping is exposed and bare-bones.

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

How to book a campsite near Farmingdale
New York State Parks, including Heckscher and Wildwood, use ReserveAmerica. Campsite reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival; this applies to campsites only. Walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Fire Island's Watch Hill Family Campground is run by a concessioner and is not booked through Recreation.gov, so reservations must go through the concessioner directly. Peak summer weekends (July through Labor Day) typically require a 3-night minimum, off-season weekends a 2-night minimum, and Independence Day and Labor Day holiday weekends a 5-night minimum.
Floyd Bennett Field books through Recreation.gov up to six months in advance. Liberty Harbor RV Park books directly through the park.
What to expect at campgrounds near Farmingdale
Long Island state park campgrounds run large and structured rather than remote. Each campsite has a picnic table, and dumping stations are nearby, and showers and flush toilets are standard. Pets are not permitted at Heckscher campsites or cottages, and maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights. At Wildwood, each tent site allows a maximum of two tents and six people, and each trailer site allows one trailer, RV, or motorhome plus six people. Pets are prohibited throughout the park year-round.
Fire Island is different: no cars, sand walking paths, and ferry-based arrival. Grocery runs mean the on-site store or a return ferry trip.
Floyd Bennett Field is urban camping. This year-round campground on Jamaica Bay offers tent and RV parking sites, vault toilets, showers, and sinks with running water. Expect airplane and traffic noise alongside bay views.

On RVezy, travel trailers in the Farmingdale area generally run about $95 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes about $175 to $295, and larger Class A coaches about $250 to $400. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Farmingdale%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Farmingdale, NY?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Farmingdale. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers available on RVezy, including Class A, Class B campervans, Class C, and fifth wheels. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy will confirm your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home country license. That's it, you're cleared to hit the Long Island Expressway.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/driver-licensesIs my RV rental in Farmingdale protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every RVezy booking in Farmingdale includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive off with peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and it covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip. If a branch on Sunrise Highway leaves a scratch or you get a flat on the Long Island Expressway, you have meaningful financial protection in place. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully during checkout and message the host through the RVezy app with any final questions before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Farmingdale RV rental?
Booking an RV rental in Farmingdale is low-risk thanks to RVezy's standardized cancellation policy, which applies to every reservation on the platform. There is a money-back grace period right after you book, plus additional refund options based on how far out you cancel from your trip start date. Cancellation terms are managed by RVezy directly, not by individual hosts, so you see consistent treatment across every listing. If a host has to cancel, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs for summer at Hither Hills or Wildwood, knowing you have a clear policy if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Farmingdale?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental Farmingdale options are easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search to see motorhomes and travel trailers whose owners welcome four-legged co-pilots. Long Island is a great dog destination too: Bethpage State Park, just minutes from Farmingdale, allows leashed dogs on most trails, and Smith Point County Park has a dog-friendly bay-side area outside lifeguarded hours. New York State Parks require dogs on a leash no longer than 6 feet with proof of rabies vaccination. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee or breed notes so check-in is seamless.
parks.ny.gov/about/faq.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Farmingdale?
Yes, RV delivery Farmingdale is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a 30-foot rig down the Southern State Parkway (where RVs are not allowed anyway). Many local hosts will deliver, level, and set up the RV at your campground, think Battle Row in Old Bethpage, Heckscher State Park, or Wildwood State Park, then walk you through the systems before they leave. Some will even handle pickup at the end. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts offering this service and check each listing for the delivery radius and fee. Pro tip: stationary delivery is perfect for a family RV trip Farmingdale beginners can fully relax into.
parks.ny.gov/parks/153How far can I drive on my Farmingdale RV trip without racking up mileage fees?
Most Farmingdale-area hosts include between 100 and 150 free miles per night, and several offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a bigger loop. From Farmingdale, you are roughly 95 miles to Montauk Point, 80 miles to Greenport on the North Fork, 15 miles to the Fire Island ferries at Sayville, and about 35 miles into Manhattan. Extra miles typically cost $0.30 to $0.50 each if you go over. Pro tip: if you are planning an RV road trip from Farmingdale up to the Catskills or out to the Hamptons more than once, filter for unlimited mileage listings so you can wander without watching the odometer.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Farmingdale%2C%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Farmingdale, NY for RV camping?
You are spoiled for choice for RV camping Farmingdale travelers love. A few standouts: Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage (about 6 miles north) offers wooded sites with electric and water hookups. Heckscher State Park in East Islip (about 18 miles east) has RV sites near the Great South Bay. Wildwood State Park in Wading River (about 40 miles east) sits on hundreds of acres of forest along Long Island Sound. Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach (about 20 miles south) is a beloved oceanfront RV park, and Cedar Point County Park near East Hampton offers East End access. Pro tip: New York State Park sites book through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance, so plan ahead for summer weekends.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year to take an RV trip from Farmingdale?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for an RV rental in Farmingdale, with the absolute sweet spot being June and September. Long Island summers run warm and humid (highs 78-85°F, lows in the mid-60s), while shoulder seasons bring 65-75°F days, fewer crowds at Jones Beach, and 20-30% lower nightly rates. Fall foliage on the North Fork peaks in mid to late October, with pumpkin patches and vineyards in full swing. Winter rentals are available too, though many campgrounds close from November to April. Pro tip: locals know September on Fire Island is unbeatable, warm Atlantic water, empty boardwalks, and easy ferry reservations.
weather.gov/okx/I have never driven an RV before. How do I know I will be okay in Farmingdale?
First time renting an RV? You are in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, slide-outs, tanks, and propane, and they are a text away during your trip. For Farmingdale renters nervous about Long Island traffic, two pro moves: choose a Class B campervan or smaller Class C (under 25 feet) for easier handling, or book a host who delivers and sets up the RV for you. Avoid the New York State parkways entirely (commercial vehicles and most RVs are prohibited and many bridges are only 7 to 8 feet clear) and stick to the Long Island Expressway (I-495) and Sunrise Highway east of Route 110. You have got this.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/lim/parkways.pdfWhat happens if I get a flat tire or break down during my Farmingdale RV trip?
You are never stranded with an RVezy rental. Every booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on the LIE, a dead battery at Smith Point, or a tow off Montauk Highway is just one call away. The roadside team can dispatch tire service, jump-starts, fuel delivery, lockout help, and towing to the nearest repair facility. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app to help troubleshoot small issues like generator quirks or stuck slide-outs. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's tire pressures and fuel level at pickup, it makes any roadside call quicker and keeps your trip moving.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Farmingdale RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Farmingdale across state lines is popular and easy to plan. Most hosts welcome trips throughout the Northeast: the Jersey Shore (about 2 hours), the Berkshires in Massachusetts (about 3 hours), Acadia National Park in Maine (about 8 hours), or Niagara Falls (about 6.5 hours). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host's insurance, so message the host through the listing before booking to confirm and to gather any paperwork you will need at the border. One important note: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: keep your rental agreement and ID handy at any border crossing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow should I budget for fuel on a Farmingdale RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to plan for. Expect 8-10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A, 10-14 MPG for a Class C, 18-22 MPG for a Class B campervan, and your tow vehicle's normal MPG minus 3-5 for travel trailers. Gas in the Farmingdale area typically runs around $3.30-$3.70 per gallon, with diesel slightly higher. A round-trip from Farmingdale to Montauk (about 100 miles) in a Class C burns roughly $25-$30 in gas. Pro tip: GasBuddy consistently shows cheaper fuel along Route 110 and on the Suffolk side near Bay Shore, fill up there instead of on the parkways' service plazas.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead do I need to book a campground near Farmingdale?
For summer weekends on Long Island, book your campsite as soon as you book your RV, the popular spots fill fast. New York State Parks (Heckscher, Wildwood, Hither Hills) open reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and oceanfront sites at Hither Hills in Montauk often sell out within minutes of the booking window opening. Suffolk County parks (Smith Point, Cedar Point) and Nassau County's Nickerson Beach Park use county park systems and may require resident or non-resident permits. Pro tip: for last-minute summer trips, look midweek at Battle Row in Old Bethpage or check private parks out east, they often have better same-week availability than the state oceanfront favorites.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Farmingdale?
Driving an RV around Farmingdale is straightforward once you know the golden rule: stay off the parkways. New York State parkways (Northern State, Southern State, Wantagh, Meadowbrook, Sunrise west of Route 110, Ocean) prohibit commercial vehicles and have low bridge clearances as low as 7-8 feet, which will damage a motorhome. Stick to the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Route 110, Sunrise Highway east of exit 44, and Montauk Highway (Route 27A). Traffic eastbound on Fridays after 2 pm can be brutal in summer, especially heading to the Hamptons. Pro tip: leave Farmingdale before 10 am or after 7 pm on summer Fridays for a much smoother RV trip east.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/lim/parkways.pdfWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Farmingdale?
Most campgrounds near Farmingdale are well-equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Nickerson Beach Park and Battle Row generally offer 30/50 amp electric, water hookups, dump stations, hot showers, and laundry. Heckscher and Wildwood State Parks provide electric and water at many sites, with centralized dump stations and modern restrooms. Cedar Point County Park has electric sites plus pump-out service. Cell signal is strong almost everywhere on Long Island, and most parks have potable water fill stations near the entrance. Pro tip: if your RV needs a full sewer hookup at the site (rare on Long Island), look at private parks out east, otherwise plan one dump-station stop on your way home from any state park trip.
parks.ny.gov/parks/153What is actually inside the RVs available for rent in Farmingdale?
You will be impressed by how loaded these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental Farmingdale travelers book includes a full kitchen (fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 4 to 8 people, air conditioning, propane heat, a dining area, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Most have a TV, many have outdoor speakers and awnings, and a growing number include WiFi boosters or Starlink. Generators are common in Class A and Class C motorhomes for off-grid power. Campervan rental Farmingdale options (Class B) trade size for nimbleness but still include a bed, kitchenette, and often a wet bath. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and amenities to find your perfect match.

Mileage policies are set per listing, so check whether yours has unlimited miles or a nightly allowance. Pro tip: use the Instant Book filter to lock in your rental in minutes instead of waiting for host approval.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Farmingdale%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?

You pay through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book, and your funds are protected because the host does not receive payment until after your trip starts. Each host sets a refundable security deposit (commonly $500 to $1,500 for Farmingdale-area rentals), which is held during your trip and released back to your card within a few days of return assuming everything is in order. No cash, no Venmo, no off-platform payments. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, time-stamped photos protect both you and the host and help resolve any deposit questions quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Farmingdale?
Farmingdale is an outstanding launch pad for an RV road trip. Popular routes include Montauk and the Hamptons (about 95 miles east, around 2 hours via Sunrise Highway) for lighthouses and surf beaches; the North Fork wine country around Greenport (about 80 miles, around 1 hour 45 minutes) for vineyards and Orient Beach State Park; Fire Island via the Sayville ferry (about 15 miles south); the Catskills (about 130 miles, around 2.5 hours) for hiking and waterfalls; and Cape Cod (about 260 miles, around 5 hours including the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point to New London) for a classic New England loop. Pro tip: the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point to New London, Connecticut accepts RVs and saves hours versus driving around through New York City.
