Campgrounds near Haverstraw
Haverstraw sits on the west bank of the Hudson River in Rockland County, roughly 35 miles north of New York City. The area is bordered by Harriman State Park, Bear Mountain, and the Hudson Highlands, giving RV travelers a cluster of camping options within a short drive.
Most nearby camping falls into two categories: New York State Park campgrounds and privately run RV parks. Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park is the closest state-run option and sits adjacent to Lake Welch, though it has no electrical hookups and caps trailers and RVs at 30 feet. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park is farther north off the Taconic State Parkway and runs as a rustic, no-hookup facility, though the main campground is closed for the 2026 season while a new bathhouse is built.
For full-hookup RV camping, Black Bear Campground in Florida, New York, operates as a private year-round park, and Sylvan Lake Beach Park in Hopewell Junction offers RV and tent sites on a private lake. Camp Wyanokie, across the state line in West Milford, New Jersey, is a rustic tent and group camp and does not accommodate RVs or trailers.
Things to do around Haverstraw
Harriman State Park anchors outdoor recreation in the area, with over 200 miles of trails, more than 30 lakes and reservoirs, two swimming beaches, and access to a stretch of the Appalachian Trail. Lake Welch, next to Beaver Pond Campground, has a lifeguarded sandy beach staffed in summer. Bear Mountain State Park is a short drive north for hiking, the Perkins Memorial Tower drive, and the seasonal pool.
Clarence Fahnestock State Park adds a beach on Canopus Lake, rowboat and kayak rentals, and fishing for bass, pickerel, perch, and trout across two lakes and four ponds. In winter, part of the park operates as Fahnestock Winter Park, with about 20 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails.
The Hudson River corridor itself supports the Haverstraw Bay waterfront, Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site, and ferry access across to Ossining.

State park campgrounds in the Lower Hudson Valley are strongly seasonal. Beaver Pond typically runs from late April through mid-October, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Weekend sites at Beaver Pond fill quickly because of the campground's proximity to New York City, and generators, group camping, and swimming crowds are common in July and August. Weekday and shoulder-season stays are noticeably quieter. Note that the Pelton Pond campground at Clarence Fahnestock is closed for the entire 2026 season for construction of a new bathhouse.
Spring brings variable temperatures, wet trails, and swollen creeks. Summer is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms; lake beaches are staffed with lifeguards only during posted hours and can close on short notice due to water quality. Fall delivers reliable foliage from late September through mid-October and is the most comfortable stretch for hiking.
Winter closes the state park campgrounds and the Canopus Lake beach, but private campgrounds such as Black Bear operate year-round, and Fahnestock Winter Park opens when snow conditions allow.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book
New York State Park campsites, including Beaver Pond at Harriman, are booked through ReserveAmerica online or by calling 1-800-456-2267. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance of the arrival date, and same-day reservations are accepted online until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Walk-ins are permitted only for campsites.
Because Harriman is within an hour of New York City, weekend sites often sell out at the nine-month window, especially for summer holidays. Booking as early as possible is the safest approach. The Pelton Pond loops at Clarence Fahnestock are unavailable for the 2026 season while a new bathhouse is built, so confirm reopening status before planning around that park.
Black Bear Campground and Sylvan Lake Beach Park are private and book directly through each campground's own website. Camp Wyanokie takes reservations through its online system and does not accommodate RVs or trailers.
What to expect
Expect a mix of rustic state park camping and full-service private RV parks. Beaver Pond and Pelton Pond have picnic tables, fire rings, comfort stations, and showers, but no site electric, water, or sewer hookups. Beaver Pond has a laundry room and a dump station; Clarence Fahnestock has neither. Both restrict trailer and RV length, and larger rigs should confirm site dimensions before booking, as Beaver Pond caps sites at 30 feet.
Bear activity is documented in Harriman State Park, so food storage rules are enforced. Beaver Pond prohibits pets and alcohol, and quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., with generator use limited to set windows.
For full hookups and a pool, Black Bear Campground is the closest full-service private option. Sylvan Lake Beach Park adds swimming, boating, and a sandy beach on a private lake.
