Camping near Lakeview, New York
Lakeview sits in Nassau County on Long Island's South Shore, minutes from JFK Airport and within easy reach of both New York City camping options and the beaches, bays, and state parks that stretch east across Long Island. RV renters use Lakeview as a base for weekend trips to Fire Island, Great South Bay, and the lower Hudson Valley without committing to a long drive.
The closest developed campground is Floyd Bennett Field - Gateway National Recreational Area, the official campground inside Gateway National Recreation Area on the northwest side of the former airfield. Farther east on Long Island, Heckscher State Park campground offers 67 sites on Long Island's scenic Great South Bay shoreline in Suffolk County, and Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island is reachable by ferry from Patchogue.
For a more wooded, inland trip, the Beaver Pond Campground adjoins the Lake Welch Recreation Area within Harriman State Park, located just 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge. Liberty Harbor RV Park across the Hudson in Jersey City rounds out the short list for travelers who want full urban access.
Things to do around Lakeview
At Floyd Bennett Field, the grounds turn up hiking trails, historic airplane hangars, and a recreation complex with bike rentals, and camping reservations include access to an outdoor archery range. The former airfield connects by bike path to Jacob Riis Park and Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.
Heckscher State Park focuses on the water. The park is known for its water recreation opportunities including bay swimming at West Beach, boat launches, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding, with four miles of paved multi-use trails wind through the park for hiking and biking.
Fire Island's Watch Hill sits inside a protected barrier-island landscape with a lifeguarded beach, a self-guided nature trail, ranger programs, and quick access to the Otis Pike High Dune Wilderness. Harriman State Park adds lakes, swimming beaches, and long stretches of the Appalachian Trail for day hikes from Beaver Pond.

Sites at Watch Hill are available typically from mid-May through mid-October.
Gateway's Brooklyn campground runs a similar late-spring through mid-fall calendar. Bugs pick up as summer progresses, with mosquitoes and gnats reported as a persistent nuisance from midsummer into fall, so screens and repellent are worth packing.

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

How to book campgrounds near Lakeview
Reservation systems vary by campground. New York State Parks including Heckscher and Beaver Pond book through ReserveAmerica, and camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at 8 AM Monday through Friday and 9 AM Saturday and Sunday. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival; this applies to campsites only.
Floyd Bennett Field's Camp Gateway Brooklyn is booked in advance online through the federal recreation reservation system or by phone. Watch Hill Family Campground and its glamping tents are booked through the concessioner rather than Recreation.gov, while wilderness and backcountry camping in the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness is accessed via Davis Park and Watch Hill. Liberty Harbor RV Park books directly through the operator's site.
What to expect on site
Hookups are limited across the region. Heckscher provides restrooms, showers, a dump station, and picnic tables at each site, but no electric, water, or sewer hookups are available. Beaver Pond offers comfort stations, showers, laundry facilities and a dumping station on site, but there are no electrical hookups for trailers at this campground. Rigs also need to be sized appropriately: select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long.
Fire Island is walk-in only. Transportation to Watch Hill is by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue, so tent camping rather than RV parking is the model there. Pet rules are strict: pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, and Heckscher does not allow pets at campsites either. Expect crowds close to the city on peak weekends and book well ahead.

Pro tip: review each listing's included fees so the price you see at checkout is the price you pay.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lakeview%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Lakeview, NY?
Good news: a regular New York driver's license (or any valid US or Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Lakeview. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required in New York State for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally. To book on RVezy, approved drivers must generally be at least 25 years old and complete a quick identity verification at checkout. Visiting from overseas? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued before you fly. Most first-time renters in Nassau County are surprised how simple the paperwork really is.

Yes, every RV rental in Lakeview, NY booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right into your reservation. During checkout you choose your protection tier, which provides financial peace of mind against most accidental damage to the RV. Hosts do not set or change the protection options, so you are in control of the coverage level you select. If you have a flat on the Southern State Parkway or a battery issue at the campground, one phone call gets help dispatched. Pro tip: snap photos at pickup and drop-off so any small claims are resolved smoothly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Lakeview RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a clear, consistent cancellation policy to every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund outcomes depend on how far in advance you cancel before your trip start date. Because RVezy, not the host, manages the cancellation policy, the rules are the same across every Lakeview listing you browse. If a host needs to cancel, RVezy helps you receive a refund or rebooking credit. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Lakeview, NY RV trip rigs for summer weekends, then relax knowing the policy has your back if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Lakeview?
Absolutely, your dog is welcome on plenty of trips. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see every pet-friendly RV rental in Lakeview, NY, and message the host if you want to confirm breed or size details. Nearby, Nickerson Beach Park Campground in Lido Beach allows leashed pets at the campground, and many Suffolk County parks like Cedar Point in East Hampton welcome leashed dogs. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl and a towel; the boardwalk at Long Beach and the trails at Hempstead Lake State Park, just minutes from Lakeview, are favorite tail-wagging stops.
nassaucountyny.gov/1605/Nickerson-Beach-ParkCan the RV be delivered to me in Lakeview?
Yes, RV delivery in Lakeview is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who would rather skip driving a large rig through Nassau County traffic. Many hosts will deliver and set up the RV directly at your campsite at Nickerson Beach, Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage, or even your driveway. They level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and how far they will drive. Pro tip: delivery to a campground often beats towing yourself when summer parkway traffic hits.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lakeview%2C%20New%20YorkHow far can I drive on a Lakeview RV trip?
Plenty far. Each host sets their own mileage policy, and many Lakeview, NY listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer trips out east. From Lakeview you are about 95 miles (roughly 2.5 hours) to Montauk Point, 40 miles to the Fire Island ferries at Bay Shore, 130 miles to the Catskills, and 130 miles to the Poconos. Every listing shows the included mileage and per-mile overage upfront, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: if you are planning a Hamptons loop plus a Connecticut ferry crossing, message the host before booking to confirm extra miles.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lakeview%2C%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Lakeview, NY?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Lakeview, NY include Nickerson Beach Park Campground in Lido Beach (about 15 minutes south, oceanfront RV sites with hookups, open spring through fall), Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage (about 20 minutes east, quiet wooded sites with hookups), Heckscher State Park in East Islip (about 45 minutes east on Great South Bay), Wildwood State Park in Wading River (about 90 minutes east on Long Island Sound), and Hither Hills State Park in Montauk (about 2 hours east with legendary oceanfront sites). Pro tip: Nickerson typically requires a Nassau County Leisure Pass for the resident rate, so apply online before you book.
nassaucountyny.gov/1605/Nickerson-Beach-ParkWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Lakeview?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping Lakeview, NY travelers love, with the sweet spot in June and September when ocean breezes keep highs in the comfortable 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit. July and August deliver peak beach weather (mid-80s) along with the busiest crowds and rates. The spring shoulder season (April to mid-May) brings cool 50s and 60s and quieter campgrounds. Winters are cold (20s to 40s) with occasional Nor'easters, so most local campgrounds close from November through March. Pro tip: book the week after Labor Day, the weather is still great, kids are back in school, and Hamptons traffic finally calms down.
weather.gov/okx/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay on my first trip?
You will be just fine, even if it is your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the slides, leveling, propane, water, and waste systems, and they are a text away during your trip. For Lakeview, NY first-timers we recommend starting with a smaller Class C motorhome or a 20-25 foot travel trailer, both easy to maneuver on suburban Nassau roads. If you want zero driving stress, choose a host who offers delivery so the RV is already set up when you arrive. Pro tip: practice a few right turns and reverses in a large empty parking lot before heading east on the LIE.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lakeview%2C%20New%20YorkWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You are never on your own. Every motorhome rental Lakeview, NY booking comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included in the RVezy protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are on the Wantagh Parkway, the LIE, or somewhere out on Route 27 in Montauk. Roadside covers common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also a direct contact for quick questions about quirks of their specific rig. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before you pull out of the driveway, and you will have backup ready before you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lakeview RV rental out of state or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Lakeview to other US states is welcome on most listings. Popular routes include the Jersey Shore (about 90 miles south), the Poconos in Pennsylvania (about 130 miles west), Cape Cod (about 260 miles north via the New London ferry), and the White Mountains of New Hampshire (about 350 miles north). Cross-border trips to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the listing, so message the host before booking if Montreal or Niagara Falls Ontario is on your map. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: the Orient Point to New London ferry takes RVs and saves hours of driving around New York City.
longislandferry.com/What does fuel cost for an RV trip from Lakeview?
Budgeting fuel is straightforward. Long Island regular gas prices typically run above the national average. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but reduce your tow vehicle's MPG to around 10 to 13. Class B campervans average about 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches 6 to 9 MPG. For a 300-mile weekend loop to Montauk and back, plan on roughly $90 to $160 in fuel for most rigs. Pro tip: fill up in Suffolk County (Riverhead or Medford) where prices often beat Nassau County by 15 to 25 cents per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Lakeview?
Earlier is better, especially for summer. New York State Parks like Wildwood, Heckscher, and Hither Hills open reservations well in advance through ReserveAmerica, and Memorial Day to Labor Day weekends often sell out quickly after opening. Suffolk County parks (Cedar Point, Smith Point, Indian Island) book through the county's online system months ahead. Nickerson Beach Park reservations typically open in early spring for Nassau County Leisure Pass holders. For a family RV trip Lakeview, NY weekends in July, lock in your site three to six months ahead. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday to Wednesday) frequently have openings even in peak season.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What are the local driving conditions like around Lakeview?
Lakeview sits in central Nassau County between the Southern State Parkway and the Long Island Rail Road, so the most important thing to know is that New York State parkways (Southern State, Northern State, Meadowbrook, Wantagh) prohibit commercial vehicles and have low stone-arch bridges that are unsafe for most RVs. Stick to the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Sunrise Highway (Route 27 east of the parkway split), and Route 25 (Jericho Turnpike) for all RV travel. Summer Friday-afternoon eastbound LIE traffic is legendary, so plan to leave Lakeview before 1 PM or after 7 PM. Pro tip: use a truck-routing GPS app to keep you off restricted parkways automatically.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/Commercial%20Vehicle%20Restrictions%20on%20New%20York%20State%20Parkways.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Lakeview?
Most campgrounds within an hour of Lakeview offer the essentials and then some. Nickerson Beach has 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups at RV sites, a dump station, hot showers, laundry, and swimming pools. Battle Row Campground offers electric and water with a central dump station. State parks like Heckscher and Wildwood provide electric hookups, potable water fills, and dump stations, though full sewer at the site is less common. For where to park an RV in Lakeview overnight, stick to permitted campgrounds. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground, fill stations on Route 27 east of Riverhead can be sparse on summer Sundays.
nassaucountyny.gov/1605/Nickerson-Beach-ParkWhat's actually inside the RV I rent?
More than you would expect. A typical RV rental in Lakeview, NY comes fully equipped: real beds (queen or king masters, bunks, convertible dinettes), a kitchen with fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace heat, a dining/living area, and seatbelts for travel. Many rigs include a generator, outdoor awning, outdoor speakers, and a TV; some offer WiFi boosters or solar. Each RVezy listing shows the exact sleep count and amenity list with photos and real guest reviews. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps 6+ if you want bunks for the kids, and ask the host if linens, towels, and kitchen kits are included or sold as add-ons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lakeview%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons can I get and how does pickup work?
Hosts in the Lakeview area offer plenty of useful extras to customize your trip: linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks, generators, kayak/SUP carriers, and pet bundles. Delivery is the most popular add-on for a campervan rental Lakeview, NY guests want to skip city traffic on, with fees set per mile by each host. Pickup logistics, hours, and included mileage are listed clearly on each RVezy listing, and you can message hosts to arrange early pickup or late return. Pro tip: bundle linens and a kitchen kit with delivery and you can fly into JFK, take a short ride to Lakeview, and step into a fully stocked RV.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lakeview%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your Lakeview, NY RV trip, RVezy charges your card through the platform, never directly to the host, so everything is documented and protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, typically within a few days of drop-off. To avoid any hold-ups, photograph the RV inside and out at pickup and drop-off, and return it with the agreed fuel and propane levels. Pro tip: keep all messages and receipts inside the RVezy app, it is your single source of truth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best RV road trips I can do from Lakeview?
You have incredible options for an RV road trip from Lakeview. Head east to Montauk (about 100 miles, 2 hours via the LIE and Route 27) for oceanfront camping at Hither Hills and lighthouse views. Drive north to the Catskills (about 130 miles, 2.5 hours) for hiking around Phoenicia and the Ashokan Reservoir. Take the Orient Point ferry to New London to reach Mystic, Connecticut or continue to Cape Cod (about 260 miles total). Drive south to Cape May, NJ (about 180 miles) for Victorian charm and beach camping. For a long weekend, the Poconos in Pennsylvania are about 130 miles west. Pro tip: book the Cross Sound Ferry weeks ahead, RV slots fill fast every summer Friday.
