Campgrounds near Marathon, NY
Marathon sits in southern Cortland County along the Tioughnioga River, roughly midway between Binghamton and Syracuse just off Interstate 81. The village is small, but its position in Central New York's rolling farmland makes it a practical RV base for the Finger Lakes region, with Ithaca, Cortland, and the Southern Tier all within an easy drive.
Campground options range from riverside family parks to full-service resort sites. Lighthouse Landing Campground sits on the Tioughnioga River in Marathon itself, offering tent and RV sites, an on-site convenience store, and a summer events calendar. Yellow Lantern Kamp Grounds occupies forty acres along the same river just outside Cortland, with flat, level sites able to accommodate small to large RVs.
Further afield, Greek Peak Mountain Resort Campground at Hope Lake provides full-service and Junior RV sites near the base of Central New York's largest ski mountain. Cortlands Country Music Park and Campground adds hookup sites next to the New York State Country Music Hall of Fame, and Forest Lake Campground offers a quieter wooded stay in the surrounding countryside.
Things to do near Marathon
Outdoor activity centers on the Tioughnioga River and the Finger Lakes Trail, which passes through the surrounding hills and links to longer hiking routes across the region. Paddling, tubing, and fishing are common on the river, and the rolling terrain around Marathon supports easy day hikes and cycling on quiet county roads.
Greek Peak Mountain Resort, a short drive north, is a four-season destination with skiing and snowboarding in winter plus snow tubing and a terrain park. In warmer months the resort runs an aerial ropes course, zip line tours, a mountain bike park, and the Nor'easter Mountain Coaster, along with the Cascades Indoor Waterpark and disc golf at Hope Lake.
Closer to camp, Marathon's Main Street has diners and ice cream, and the CNY Living History Center and 1890 House Museum in Cortland cover regional history.

Most campgrounds in the Marathon area follow a spring-to-fall schedule. Yellow Lantern Kamp Grounds runs from mid-April through mid-October, and other seasonal parks in Cortland County typically open once frost risk passes in April or early May and close by late October or early November. Lighthouse Landing operates through the warm months with a regular calendar of weekend events on the river.
Peak demand runs from late June through Labor Day, when school breaks, river activity, and Greek Peak's summer adventure operations pull the most traffic. Reserve full-hookup and pull-through sites several weeks ahead for July and August weekends, especially around the Fourth of July.
Shoulder seasons work well for RV travelers. Late May and September bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier bookings, and fall foliage across Cortland County peaks in early to mid-October. Winter camping is limited: the Campground at Hope Lake closes in early November, most private parks in the area also close for the season, and lake-effect snow can affect regional roads.

Alexander was extraordinarily helpful and truly went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful time. He responded quickly and was very pleasant to interact with. The RV itself was spotless and came with everything our three children and two adults needed, including ample cooking supplies.Go ahead and book; you'll be happy with your rental!

Perfect RV to rent for our family of 5. Plenty of sleeping space. Very clean RV!!! I chose the delivery option, which made it so easy. Alex showed up exactly when he said and set everything up for us. He was very thorough showing us how everything works, etc. I would 100 percent recommend this RV. We will be renting from him again in the future!

Anthony was excellent to communicate with. The Koala trailer filled out needs at the Pocano race weekend. Good mechanical, no leaks, hauled well behind my 1500 Denali. I'll look this one up again if we go to Pocano or The Glen.

How to book campgrounds near Marathon
Campgrounds in the Marathon area are privately owned, so reservations go directly through each park rather than a state or federal system. Lighthouse Landing takes bookings by phone through its Marathon office, and Yellow Lantern Kamp Grounds handles reservations directly at its Route 13 location north of Cortland.
Greek Peak Mountain Resort Campground at Hope Lake books online through the resort's website, with seasonal-site reservations handled by phone. Payment is due in full at time of reservation, and both ACH and credit cards are accepted. Cortlands Country Music Park and Campground and Forest Lake Campground each take reservations through their own phone lines or websites.
For summer holiday weekends, book eight to twelve weeks out. Confirm rig length, hookup type, and any pet or generator rules at the time of reservation, since site specifications vary between parks.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of river-valley and hill-country terrain. Sites at Lighthouse Landing and Yellow Lantern sit along the Tioughnioga, so shade, grass, and occasional soft ground after rain are normal. Yellow Lantern's sites are flat and level, accommodating small to large vehicles. The Campground at Hope Lake offers level, resort-style sites close to lodge amenities.
Hookups vary. The Campground at Hope Lake has 26 larger RV sites with water, electric, and sewer, plus 15 Junior RV sites with water and electric only, and an on-site bath house with showers and laundry. Some older Cortland County parks offer water and electric with a central dump station rather than full sewer at every site.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near I-81 and in Cortland, but weakens in the hollows and along the Finger Lakes Trail. Bring bug protection in early summer, and pack layers: overnight temperatures drop noticeably even in July.

parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time to visit Marathon, NY in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Marathon, NY. Summer from June to August brings warm days averaging 75 to 82 F and cool nights in the 55 to 60 F range, ideal for sleeping with the windows open. September and early October are arguably the best of all: foliage in the Tully Hills and surrounding state forests turns brilliant red and gold, daytime temps hover in the 60s, and campgrounds quiet down after Labor Day. Winters here are genuinely cold and snowy, often dipping below 20 F, so most local campgrounds close mid-October through mid-May. Pro tip: target the third week of September for peak fall color and great shoulder-season rates.
weather.gov/bgm/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Marathon?
You'll be in great shape: Marathon is one of the friendliest places in New York to learn. The village sits right off I-81 with wide rural roads, light traffic, and no big-city congestion. Your RVezy host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, water, and dump station basics, so you're not figuring it out alone. First time renting an RV? Choose a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer with delivery included, so all you do is drive yourself to the campground in your own car. Pro tip: do a short practice loop on Route 11 north of town before heading toward hillier routes near Greek Peak.
