Campgrounds and RV parks near Nassau, NY

Water and trail activities dominate. Cherry Plain State Park sits on Black River Pond with a sandy beach and boat launch, rowboat and paddle boat rentals, plus bridle paths and multi-use trails that double as cross-country ski routes in winter. Anglers target bass, bullheads, and pickerel in the pond. Across the state line, Pittsfield State Forest offers roughly 30 miles of trails along the Taconic Crest, wild azalea fields that bloom in early June, and Berry Pond at 2,150 feet elevation. Families using Alps Family Campground Inc, Spacious Skies Woodland Hills, or Broken Wheel Campground can add day trips to Grafton Lakes State Park, downtown Albany museums, and the wider Berkshires.

The camping season around Nassau is short and clearly defined. Cherry Plain State Park operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with weekends only from opening through late June and daily operation from the last weekend in June onward. Pittsfield State Forest runs roughly mid-May through mid-October, and most private campgrounds in the region follow a similar May through October window with little to no winter operation. Spring is muddy and variable, with wet trails and cool nights, and blackflies common in May and early June. Summer is the busiest stretch, with warm days, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and near-full campgrounds on weekends around Independence Day and Labor Day. Popular sites fill weeks in advance for those holidays. Fall brings crisp air, strong Berkshire foliage color from late September into mid-October, and cold overnights that can drop below freezing by November. Winter shuts most campgrounds; trails at Cherry Plain and Pittsfield State Forest shift to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, but overnight camping is generally unavailable.

Facilities range from full-service private parks to fairly rustic state sites. Cherry Plain State Park has about 30 campsites split among trailer, lakeside tent, and hike-in tent options, with modern restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and fire rings. Pets are welcome with current proof of rabies vaccination and a leash no longer than six feet. Parker Brook at Pittsfield State Forest is more basic, with no electrical hookups and no dump station and short RV length limits, so it suits smaller rigs and pop-ups. Reservations are mandatory. Private parks in the area generally offer water, electric, and some sewer hookups plus family amenities. Cell coverage is patchy in the hills, roads into state forest loops can be narrow and steep, and bear-aware food storage is expected. Firewood must usually be bought on site to limit the spread of forest pests.
