Campgrounds and RV parks near Nassau Lake, NY

The area is built around lakes, ponds, and low mountain trails. At Cherry Plain State Park, biking, boating, fishing, hiking, hunting, and picnicking are the park's most popular summer activities, and winter visitors can cross-country ski. Anglers fish Black River Pond for bass, bullheads, and pickerel, and rowboats and paddle boats are available for rental. Across the state line, Pittsfield State Forest is a sprawling 11,000-acre area of Massachusetts state forest, and Berry Pond sits at an elevation of 2,150 feet, the highest natural body of water in the state. Over 30 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails wind through the forest, with cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing in winter, and the azalea fields draw visitors in early summer. Closer in, Spacious Skies Woodland Hills, Alps Family Campground Inc, and Broken Wheel Campground offer on-site recreation, and Jiminy Peak, Tanglewood, and the Berkshire Botanical Garden are all within reach for day trips.

The camping calendar around Nassau Lake is short and clearly seasonal. Most public campgrounds run from late spring through early fall. Cherry Plain State Park operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with reservations available through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance. At Pittsfield State Forest, the regular camping season runs from mid-May to mid-October, and private parks like Spacious Skies Woodland Hills follow a similar warm-season schedule. Summer is peak. July and August bring the warmest weather and the highest demand for lakeside and hookup sites, so booking well ahead is the norm. Late spring into early summer is worth planning around for the azalea bloom at Pittsfield State Forest, and September delivers cooler nights, quieter campgrounds, and early foliage in the Taconics. Winter is a different trip. Albany-area weather turns cold and snowy: winters are usually cold and sometimes fairly severe, with maximum temperatures often below freezing and nighttime lows frequently below 10 degrees F. Most campgrounds close, but the park has bridle paths and hiking, biking, and nature trails that serve as cross-country ski trails in winter at Cherry Plain.

Sites vary widely by facility. Cherry Plain has 30 total sites: 10 trailer sites, 10 lakeside tent sites, and 10 hike-in tent sites, with modern restrooms with showers, picnic tables, and fire rings at campsites. Trailer sites do not offer full hookups, so RV renters should arrive with fresh water and empty tanks. At Pittsfield State Forest, the Parker Brook Loop is the only one that has RV-suitable camping, and facilities include hot showers, flushable toilets, and a dump station. RV length is limited, so larger rigs should confirm before booking. Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground, and firewood must be purchased at the campground. Private parks like Spacious Skies Woodland Hills offer full-hookup sites with water, electric, and sewer, plus water/electric-only options, and can accommodate 30-amp and 50-amp needs. Pets are common but leash and vaccination rules apply.
