RV camping near Nelsonville, New York
Nelsonville sits in Putnam County in the Hudson Highlands, immediately east of Cold Spring and roughly an hour north of New York City. The village is surrounded by protected land, including Harriman State Park to the south and the neighboring Clarence Fahnestock State Park to the east. That makes it a practical base for RV renters who want Hudson River scenery, hiking, and easy highway access back toward the metro area.
Campground options within a short drive range from rustic state park sites to full-hookup private resorts. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park and Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park cover the state-park side, while New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday, Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River provide amenity-heavy stays with hookups, pools, and family programming.
RV size limits matter here. State park sites in this region tend to be shorter and un-serviced, while KOA and Jellystone properties handle larger rigs with electric, water, and sewer.
Things to do near Nelsonville
Hiking dominates the area. Trailheads for Breakneck Ridge, Bull Hill (Mount Taurus), and the Hudson Highlands sit within a few miles of the village, and Harriman offers swimming, fishing, paddling, and miles of trails across its lakes. Fahnestock State Park adds Canopus Lake for swimming, boat rentals, and quieter shoreline trails suited to families with younger kids.
Cold Spring's Main Street, walkable from Nelsonville, offers restaurants, antique shops, and a Metro-North station for a car-free day trip into Manhattan. West Point, Storm King Art Center, and Dia Beacon are all short drives away.
For rainy-day backups, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River runs pools and organized activities on site, and the Newburgh KOA has a pool and playground for kids to burn energy without leaving the campground.

The main RV season runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. Beaver Pond at Harriman opens on the last Friday in April and closes on the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend in October. State-run sites in the region typically close for the winter, so trips from late October through March generally require a private park with year-round operation.
Summer is peak. Weekends fill early, especially at parks close to New York City. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Fall brings strong foliage color through the Highlands in mid to late October and is a good window for cooler-weather hiking.
Spring can be wet and buggy, with black flies and ticks active in wooded areas. Winter camping in the immediate area is limited, and heavy snow can close park roads and trails.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book campgrounds in the area
New York State Parks, which includes Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock and Beaver Pond at Harriman, uses the ReserveAmerica system. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at 8AM Monday through Friday and 9AM Saturday and Sunday from March 15 through Labor Day, and at 9AM daily the rest of the year. Same-day reservations are permitted until 3pm, and walk-ins are allowed on campsites when space is available.
Private campgrounds run their own systems. New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday books through the KOA website or app, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River books through the Jellystone site, and Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc takes reservations directly. Book holiday weekends and full-hookup pull-through sites several months out.
What to expect on site
State park campgrounds in this region are rustic. Sites at Beaver Pond accommodate trailers or RVs up to 30 feet, each with a picnic table and fire ring, and the campground has shared full-service bathrooms with showers, laundry, and a dump station, but no electrical hookups. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond, alcohol is prohibited, and the campground operates as carry-in, carry-out for trash. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock is similar in character: wooded, tent-friendly, and limited for large rigs.
Private parks are the opposite end. The Newburgh KOA and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River offer full hookups, longer pull-throughs, Wi-Fi, pools, and family programming, and both accept pets on leash. Cell coverage is generally reliable near the highway corridors and spotty deep inside the state parks.
