Camping near New Baltimore, New York
New Baltimore sits on the west bank of the Hudson River in Greene County, roughly 20 minutes south of Albany and within easy reach of the northern Catskills. The area works well as an RV base because it puts campers between two distinct landscapes: the Hudson Valley to the east and the Catskill Escarpment to the west, both threaded with state parks, forest preserves, and small river towns.
Campground options nearby range from full-service resort-style parks to smaller wooded sites. Treetopia Campground in Catskill offers RV camping alongside glamping canvas tents, Airstream Experience units, and luxury family cottages. Country Campsites at Michael Dees Motel and Whip-O-Will Campsite provide simpler setups closer to town. Blackthorne Campground, part of the Blackthorne Resort in East Durham, adds resort amenities including a large pool and on-site dining.
For a state-park experience, Thompsons Lake at Thacher State Park sits within John Boyd Thacher State Park, about 18 miles southwest of Albany in the Helderberg Mountains, and offers wooded campsites, a swim beach, and access to the larger Thacher trail system.
Things to do around New Baltimore
The Hudson River corridor is the main draw close to town. Day trips to Hudson, Catskill, and Athens put river walks, antique shops, and the Thomas Cole National Historic Site within a short drive. Kaaterskill Falls and North-South Lake, both in the Catskill Forest Preserve, are popular family hikes with waterfall views.
West of the river, Thacher State Park sits along the Helderberg Escarpment and provides a panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valley and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. Families staying at Thompsons Lake can combine campground swimming with the park's overlooks and the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center, located in Thompson's Lake Campground at Thacher State Park.
In winter, the Northern Catskills sit near popular ski destinations, with recreational activities in summer as well, so Windham and Hunter mountains are reachable for skiing, tubing, and mountain biking depending on the season.

The main RV season runs from late April through October. Private parks in the northern Catskills typically follow that window: Blackthorne Campground is open April 26 through November 1. Expect most private campgrounds in the area to close or limit services outside that range.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring the warmest weather, the busiest weekends, and the highest demand at riverfront and lakefront sites. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends fill earliest, and for July 4th weekend and Labor Day weekend, drive-up sites carry a two-night minimum.
Shoulder seasons are worth considering. Late May and early June are quieter and greener, while late September and October bring Catskill foliage that draws heavy day-tripper traffic but leaves midweek campsites open. Winter camping is limited: Albany sees a cold, snowy winter with significant snowfall, and most private parks are closed. At Thompsons Lake, from after Thanksgiving through April there is no water, toilet, or shower facilities available in the off season.

We had a great experience renting from Krystal and her husband. They were responsive, helpful, and very accommodating from start to finish. The camper was a perfect solution for hosting our out-of-town guests and provided the extra space we needed. We would gladly rent from them again in the future.

How to book campgrounds near New Baltimore
State-park sites and private campgrounds use different systems, so plan around both. For Thompsons Lake at Thacher State Park, reservations can be made for today and up to 9 months in advance. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival for campsites, reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Private parks like Treetopia and Blackthorne take reservations directly through their own websites. Popular Airstream and cabin units at Treetopia book out months ahead for summer weekends, so early booking is essential.
For holiday weekends and foliage weekends in October, aim to book two to three months out. Midweek stays and shoulder-season nights are usually available on shorter notice.
What to expect on-site
Site setups vary widely in this region. Resort-style parks include hookups, pools, and structured activities, while state-park campgrounds are more basic. Thompson's Lake Campground does not have electric sites, so RVers relying on hookups should plan for a private park instead or come prepared to run on battery and generator within posted hours.
Expect standard state-park rules where applicable: quiet hours from 10PM to 7AM and any visitors must leave the park by 10PM, generator hours from 9AM to 11AM and 5PM to 9PM, and current proof of rabies inoculation required at check-in. A maximum of two vehicles is allowed per site, with additional cars charged a fee.
Cell service is reliable along the Hudson corridor but gets patchy in the Catskill hollows. Bears are present in the region, so store food and trash securely, and use only local firewood to protect area forests.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Baltimore%2C%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in New Baltimore, NY?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New Baltimore. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal-use motorhomes and trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers nearly every RV on RVezy. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified right through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the paperwork is by pickup day.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my trip protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in New Baltimore booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Thruway with real peace of mind. You choose the level of coverage that fits your comfort during checkout (not the host), and the plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip. That means if a tree branch dings the roof at North-South Lake or a stray rock cracks a window on Route 23A in the Catskills, you are not on the hook for the full repair. Review the plan details on RVezy before booking so you know exactly what is covered.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my New Baltimore RV trip?
You are not locked in the moment you book. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your New Baltimore dates with confidence. After that grace period, refund eligibility depends on how far out from your trip you cancel, which matters in the Hudson Valley where a surprise nor'easter or ice storm can shift plans. If your plans change, open your RVezy dashboard and the options are right there. Review the full cancellation policy on RVezy before booking so you know what to expect.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a New Baltimore RV trip?
Absolutely, and you've picked a great region for it. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental New Baltimore options are available on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see rigs whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Once you arrive, you've got tail-wagging options everywhere: Schodack Island State Park has leashed-dog trails along the Hudson, and most Greene County and Albany County state campgrounds allow pets at standard sites with proof of rabies vaccination. Pro tip: pack a copy of your dog's vaccination record. New York State requires it at all state-run campgrounds, and rangers do check on arrival.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/pets.aspxCan the RV be delivered right to my campsite?
Yes, RV delivery in New Baltimore is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather not drive a big rig down I-87 or over the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. Use the Delivery filter and you will find hosts who will tow or drive the RV straight to your campground, riverfront rental house, or private driveway in Coxsackie, Ravena, or Catskill. They will level it, hook up water and electric, fire up the fridge, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $4 per mile from the host's home base, and many hosts include the first 25 miles free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Baltimore%2C%20New%20YorkHow far can I actually drive on a New Baltimore RV trip?
Plenty far, and New Baltimore's location right off I-87 (the New York State Thruway) makes it a launchpad for some of the Northeast's best road trips. From here you're about 25 minutes to downtown Albany, 45 minutes into the heart of the Catskills, 90 minutes to Lake George, 2 hours to the Adirondack High Peaks, and roughly 2.5 hours to either Manhattan or the Berkshires in Massachusetts. Hosts set their own daily mileage allowances (usually 100 to 150 miles per day), and a few even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer journeys. Message the host before booking if you're planning an ambitious RV road trip from New Baltimore so they can quote you a fair package.
thruway.ny.gov/travelers/index.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near New Baltimore, NY?
You're spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near New Baltimore include Schodack Island State Park (about 15 minutes north, with 30/50-amp electric sites right on the Hudson River), Thompson's Lake Campground in the Helderbergs (30 minutes west, great for swimming and hiking), North-South Lake Campground in Haines Falls (45 minutes into the Catskills, the most popular state campground in the region), Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds in Saugerties (full hookups and a pool, about 35 minutes south), and Indian Ridge Campsites in Coxsackie (a quieter, family-run spot 10 minutes away). Book early, especially for weekends in July, August, and peak foliage in early October.
parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time of year for an RV trip in New Baltimore?
Late spring through mid-fall is prime time for RV camping New Baltimore travelers love, with each window offering something different. May and June bring 65 to 80 degree days, blooming Hudson Valley orchards, and far fewer bugs than July. July and August are warm (mid-80s) and perfect for swimming at Lake Taghkanic or tubing on Catskill Creek. The real local secret, though, is late September through mid-October, when daytime highs sit in the 60s, nights drop to the 40s, and the Catskills explode with red and gold foliage. Winters are cold (often below freezing with snow), so most RV trips in the area happen between mid-April and late October.
weather.gov/aly/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be just fine, and you definitely won't be left to figure it out alone. Every RVezy host in the New Baltimore area gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering how to drive, level, hook up, dump, and operate every system in the rig. First time renting an RV? Choose a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer (20 to 25 feet) for your debut, both drive much like a large van or pickup truck. Stick to wider roads like Route 9W, I-87, and Route 23 for your first day. Avoid narrow mountain shortcuts like Platte Clove Road in the Catskills until you've got a few hours behind the wheel.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/driver-manuals-and-practice-testsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Help is one phone call away, 24 hours a day. Every RV rental in New Baltimore booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If you are stuck on the Thruway shoulder near Coxsackie or pulled over on Route 32 in the middle of the night, call the number in your booking confirmation and a dispatcher arranges service to your GPS location. Your host is also typically a quick text away for questions about quirks of their specific rig. Between the two, most hiccups get sorted quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my New Baltimore RV rental into Canada or another state?
Cross-state travel is easy and common. New Baltimore sits at the crossroads of the Northeast, so RVezy renters routinely take trips into Vermont (under 2 hours to Bennington), Massachusetts (the Berkshires are 90 minutes east), New Hampshire's White Mountains, Maine, and down to Pennsylvania. Heading into Canada is sometimes possible too, but it depends on the host's insurance, so message them before booking if Montreal or Quebec City is on your wish list. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Otherwise, the open road is yours.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on my New Baltimore RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's very manageable. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and most travel trailers won't change your tow vehicle's mileage by more than 30 to 40 percent. Gas prices in the Capital Region typically run a bit below the New York State average, with stations along Route 9W in Ravena and Coxsackie among the cheapest near New Baltimore. For a typical 4-day, 400-mile loop through the Catskills and Hudson Valley, plan on roughly $150 to $250 in fuel for a Class C, less for a campervan rental New Baltimore travelers favor.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near New Baltimore?
Sooner than you think, but it is totally doable. New York State Parks (including Schodack Island, North-South Lake, and Thompson's Lake) open reservations 9 months ahead through Reserve America, and prime summer weekends often book up within the first few days. For July, August, and Columbus Day weekend, aim to reserve 4 to 6 months out. Shoulder-season midweek stays in May, June, and late September can usually be grabbed just 2 to 3 weeks ahead. Private campgrounds like Rip Van Winkle and Indian Ridge are more flexible, but still book holiday weekends by April. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for the 9-month opening date, then book right when the window opens.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local roads like for driving an RV around New Baltimore?
You'll find New Baltimore one of the friendlier places in the Northeast to drive an RV. I-87 (the New York State Thruway) is wide, well-maintained, and runs right past town, while Route 9W and Route 144 along the Hudson River are flat and easy. The catch comes when you head west into the Catskills: Route 23A through Kaaterskill Clove has steep grades and tight switchbacks that bigger Class A rigs should avoid. Stick to Route 23 or Route 32 for the gentler climb. Winter driving from December through March often brings snow and black ice, which is why most local RV rentals operate April through October.
511ny.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near New Baltimore?
Most campgrounds in the area are well-equipped for a smooth RV stay. Expect 30- and 50-amp electric hookups at New York State Parks like Schodack Island, with potable water spigots, dump stations, hot showers, and flush toilets on site. Full sewer hookups are more common at private parks like Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds and Brookside Campground in Coxsackie. Need to dump tanks mid-trip? There's a free public dump station at the Coxsackie rest area on I-87 northbound. Cell service is solid on Verizon and AT&T throughout Greene and Albany counties, and many campgrounds now offer Wi-Fi at the office, though don't expect it to stream 4K from your site.
parks.ny.gov/parks/schodackisland/details.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs available in New Baltimore?
More than you'd expect from a vehicle. A typical motorhome rental New Baltimore guests book comes fully equipped: real beds (usually a queen plus convertible dinette and sofa), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, three-burner stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted travel seats for everyone on board. Most Class C rigs sleep 4 to 6 comfortably, perfect for a family RV trip New Baltimore weekenders love. TVs, backup cameras, solar panels, and onboard generators are common upgrades, and you can filter listings by these features. Wi-Fi varies (some hosts include a hotspot for a small fee), so confirm in the listing if you'll need to stay connected.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my RV rental?
Hosts in the New Baltimore area offer a long menu of add-ons designed to make your trip easier. The most popular: linen and kitchen kits (typically $50 to $100), camp chairs and outdoor tables, propane fills, generator usage, bike racks, kayak or SUP rentals, and the big one, delivery and setup right to your campsite. Mileage policies range from 100 miles per day to fully unlimited, so check the listing details before booking. Pickup and drop-off windows are usually flexible (most hosts offer 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.), and many in the area will meet you at Albany International Airport for a small fee if you're flying in for your trip.
albanyairport.com/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and handled entirely through RVezy, never in cash to the host. You pay for your rental with a credit or debit card at booking, and the funds are held securely until the trip begins. A refundable security deposit (separate from the booking payment) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not charged unless there is an incident. After drop-off, assuming the RV comes back in the same shape it left, the hold is released. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video walk-around at both pickup and drop-off. It is the single best way to keep your deposit drama-free.
