Camping near New City, New York
New City sits in Rockland County in the Lower Hudson Valley, roughly 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge. That places RV travelers within an hour of two of New York's largest state parks, a stretch of the Appalachian Trail, and the Hudson River corridor, while still being close enough to reach Manhattan by car or transit for a day trip.
Most overnight options in the area fall into two groups. Public campgrounds inside Harriman State Park in Rockland and Orange counties, and Clarence Fahnestock State Park, which covers more than 14,000 acres of forest and recreational land in the Hudson Highlands of Putnam and Dutchess counties, handle the rustic side. Private parks in New Jersey handle full hookups and city access.
The closest named options include Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park, Camp Wyanokie, Black Bear Campground, and Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City for RVers who want to base near the harbor.
Things to do around New City
Hiking is the anchor activity. Harriman State Park has more than 200 miles of trails ranging from easy to strenuous, along with 31 lakes and multiple swimming beaches. Beaver Pond Campground sits adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area, where a lifeguarded swimming beach is available in season.
At Clarence Fahnestock, Canopus Lake, with its sandy shore and nearby picnic area, is the centerpiece of the park, and fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and in the park's four ponds is available for anglers seeking bass, pickerel, perch, or brook and rainbow trout. Rowboats and kayaks are available for rental. A section of the Appalachian Trail passes through the park.
For a city day, RVers based at Liberty Harbor can reach Manhattan by PATH train or NY Waterway ferry.

The state park campgrounds are seasonal. Beaver Pond at Harriman typically opens in late April for a brief walk-in-only period, then runs on a reservable schedule into mid-October. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock is closed for the entire 2026 season while the park constructs a new campground bathhouse, so travelers should verify the reopening date before planning around it. The park's Group Wilderness Campground remains available.
Summer is the peak booking window. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for the New York metro area, and weekend sites should be booked as far in advance as possible. Fall brings strong foliage in the Hudson Highlands and quieter midweek sites.
Winter narrows options for RV travelers. Most state park campsites close, but Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City stays open year-round, and Fahnestock Winter Park keeps day-use activity going with groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, plus a sledding area.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book
New York state park campsites are handled through the ReserveAmerica system. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance, online or through the ReserveAmerica call center. Same-day reservations are accepted until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Because the Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season, Pelton Pond sites are not currently bookable through the portal, and the Group Wilderness Campground is arranged through the park office.
Liberty Harbor RV Park is booked directly through the park's website. It stays open year-round and accepts check-ins around the clock. Weekend and holiday inventory across the region moves quickly, so lock in dates early.
What to expect
Expect rustic conditions at the state parks. Beaver Pond has 125 campsites designed for up to two tents and six people per site, with select sites able to accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet in length. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill, and the campground provides full-service bathrooms with showers, laundry, and a dump station, but no electrical hookups. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond, and only one vehicle is allowed per campsite.
Bears live in the region, so food should be stored securely. Liberty Harbor is the opposite experience: an urban waterfront lot with 30-amp and 50-amp electric plus water hookups, restrooms, showers, laundry, a dump station, and skyline views rather than trees.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near New City, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in New City, NY?
RV rental in New City is more affordable than most people expect, with motorhomes typically averaging around $200 per night and towable travel trailers near $125 per night on RVezy. Many Lower Hudson Valley hosts also offer weekly and monthly discounts, so a 7-day Harriman or Bear Mountain trip can come in well under hotel prices for the same week. To find a cheap RV rental New City offers, filter by travel trailers, book midweek, and aim for shoulder months like late April or October when demand drops. Pro tip: message a few hosts at once, mention your dates and destination, and you will often unlock unlisted discounts.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20City%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in New City, NY?
Good news: your regular New York State driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New City. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required for any motorhome or travel trailer on the RVezy platform, whether you are picking up a Class B campervan or a 30-foot Class C. Approved drivers are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform before pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit. Most first-time renters in Rockland County are surprised how quick and paperwork-free the process feels.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in New City protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RVezy booking in New City includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Palisades Parkway with peace of mind. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV during your trip, and you (not the host) choose your coverage level at checkout from several tiers depending on how much extra cushion you want. Paired with RVezy's 24/7 support team and a thorough host walkthrough at pickup, you are set up for a smooth Hudson Valley adventure. Review the specific inclusions and limits on the RVezy protection page before you book so you know exactly what is covered.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my New City RV rental?
Booking is low risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy that applies to every rental, so terms are consistent across listings. Refund eligibility depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start, and RVezy reviews cases involving severe weather or natural disasters, which can matter for Hudson Valley trips during hurricane season or winter storms. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps with a refund or rebooking credit so your plans are protected. Pro tip: book early to lock in your preferred Harriman or Bear Mountain weekend, and review the current cancellation policy on the RVezy Help Center before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a New City RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in New City is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers whose hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats too). Once you're on the road, Rockland County is a dream for dog owners: leashed pets are welcome on most trails in Harriman State Park, the Long Path passes right through nearby Mount Ivy, and Rockland Lake State Park has a 3-mile paved loop perfect for morning walks. Just note that Beaver Pond Campground inside Harriman does not allow pets, so book a private campground like Oakland Valley nearby instead. Pro tip: message the host with your pet's size and breed up front to confirm any cleaning fee.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/dogs-and-pets.aspxCan the RV be delivered to me in New City?
Yes, RV delivery in New City is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who would rather not drive a big rig on the Palisades Parkway or through Nyack's tight downtown streets. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the RV directly at your campground (such as Beaver Pond or a private park), your driveway, or a family gathering venue in Rockland County. The host typically hooks up water and power, walks you through every system, and picks the RV back up at the end of your trip. Delivery fees vary by distance, so use the Delivery filter and compare a few listings to find the best value.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20City%2C%20New%20YorkHow far can I drive on an RV rental from New City?
You can go just about anywhere on a New City RV trip thanks to its sweet-spot location 30 miles north of Manhattan. Popular routes include Harriman State Park (about 25 minutes west), Bear Mountain (35 minutes), the Catskills around Phoenicia (90 minutes northwest), Lake George in the Adirondacks (about 3 hours, 180 miles north), Cape Cod (about 5 hours east), and Niagara Falls (roughly 6.5 hours, 400 miles northwest). Each host sets their own mileage policy, with some offering generous daily allotments and others offering RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for longer Adirondack loops. Pro tip: filter for unlimited mileage if you're planning a multi-stop Hudson Valley to Vermont road trip.
dot.ny.gov/indexWhere are the best campgrounds near New City, NY?
You are spoiled for choice with great campgrounds near New City. Beaver Pond Campground inside Harriman State Park (about 20 minutes west) accommodates RVs with picnic tables, fire rings, and a dump station, though no hookups. Sebago Cabins, also in Harriman, offer rustic lakefront cabins on Lake Sebago. For full hookups, head to Newburgh / New York City North KOA in Plattekill (about 45 minutes north) or Oakland Valley Campground in Cuddebackville (about 1 hour northwest), both with pull-throughs and electric service. Croton Point Park on the Hudson (about 35 minutes east) gives you river views from many campsites. Pro tip: Beaver Pond sites fill quickly for summer weekends, so book as early as the reservation window opens.
parks.ny.gov/parks/harriman/details.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from New City?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping near New City, with daytime temperatures from the mid-60s to mid-80s Fahrenheit and the Lower Hudson Valley at its most lush. Spring brings dogwoods and rhododendrons blooming across Harriman; summer is great for swimming at Lake Welch and Lake Sebago; and fall (late September through mid-October) delivers world-class foliage along Seven Lakes Drive and Bear Mountain Bridge. Winters here can dip into the teens with snow and ice, and most state park campgrounds close from late October through April. Insider tip: book the first weekend of October for peak color without the late-fall chill, you'll thank yourself when you cross Bear Mountain Bridge at sunset.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before, is it really doable in New City?
Yes, first time renting an RV in New City is genuinely easier than you would think. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the slide-outs, propane, water heater, dump valves, and electrical systems, no guessing required. Many guests start with a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer in the 20 to 25 foot range, both of which drive similarly to a moving truck and fit easily through Rockland County roads and Harriman's campground loops. You can also message hosts before booking with any questions. Pro tip: choose a delivery-included host for your first trip so the RV is parked, leveled, and powered up before you even arrive.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or problem on the road?
You are covered: every RVezy rental in New City includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are on the Palisades Parkway, Route 17 heading to the Catskills, or deep inside Harriman State Park. Roadside assistance typically handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing arrangements. Your host is usually reachable by phone or message for questions about the RV's quirks, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and save your host's number plus the RVezy support line in your phone before you pull away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV rental from New City across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals from New City, and that is a big part of the appeal given the location. Popular RV road trips from New City include Vermont's Green Mountains (about 3 hours northeast), the Maine coast (5 to 6 hours), Acadia National Park (about 8 hours), and Washington, D.C. (about 4.5 hours south). Travel into Canada (Montreal is roughly 5 to 6 hours north) may be allowed but depends on each host's policy and insurance, so confirm with the host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: if Canada is on your itinerary, message hosts up front so you only consider listings that allow cross-border trips.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the realistic fuel cost for an RV trip from New City?
Budget-wise, expect a Class C motorhome to average 8 to 10 miles per gallon, a Class B campervan 16 to 20 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer about 10 to 12 mpg. With New York gas prices typically running $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon, a weekend round trip from New City to Harriman State Park (under 50 miles total) might cost $20 to $30 in fuel, while a 400-mile run to the Adirondacks could land between $130 and $180. Fill up before you cross into the city or onto the Thruway, where prices climb. Pro tip: the Stewart's, Sunoco, and Costco stations along Route 304 in New City are usually the cheapest fills before you hit the highway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near New City?
For summer weekends and any fall foliage trip, book your campground as soon as you confirm your RV rental, ideally 4 to 9 months ahead. Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park opens reservations up to 9 months in advance through Reserve America, and prime July and August weekends fill within hours of release. Croton Point Park (Westchester County Parks) and New York City North/Newburgh KOA also book up early for peak weekends. Midweek nights in May, September, and October are far easier to grab on short notice. Pro tip: if a weekend looks full, check back 2 weeks before your dates, cancellations are common, and you can scoop up a lakeside Harriman site that someone just released.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around New City, NY?
Driving an RV around New City is very manageable once you know a few local quirks. The Palisades Interstate Parkway, which runs right through Rockland County, bans commercial vehicles and trucks but allows passenger RVs and motorhomes, just watch for low clearances at some historic stone overpasses. Stick to the New York State Thruway (I-87) or Route 17 for the highest clearances and easiest big-rig driving. Avoid the Saw Mill River and Hutchinson River parkways in nearby Westchester, which restrict RVs and commercial vehicles. Winter drivers should plan for winter tires November through March. Pro tip: use a trucker or RV-friendly GPS app like CoPilot or RV Life so it routes you off restricted parkways automatically.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/Parkway%20Restrictions%20Map.pdfWhere can I dump tanks and fill water near New City?
You've got solid options for dump stations and potable water around New City. Beaver Pond Campground inside Harriman State Park has a dump station available to registered campers, as does New York City North/Newburgh KOA (45 minutes north) and Oakland Valley Campground in Cuddebackville. Croton Point Park in Westchester also offers a dump station for campers. Most full-hookup private campgrounds in the Hudson Valley include water spigots at each site, so you can top off as you go. Pro tip: top off your fresh water before leaving New City rather than waiting until you reach Harriman, where there's no hookup, and pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose plus a sewer hose support, which many RV stores in nearby Nanuet stock.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What amenities should I expect inside a New City RV rental?
RV rentals near New City typically come loaded for a comfortable Hudson Valley trip. Expect real beds (queen in the back of most Class Cs, plus convertible dinette and over-cab bunks for kids), a full kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and sink, and a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower. Most motorhomes include air conditioning, propane furnace, generator or shore power capability, and seatbelts for every passenger (a New York requirement for moving vehicles). Many hosts add TVs, Bluetooth speakers, outdoor awnings, and even Wi-Fi hotspots. Pro tip: check each listing's photos and amenities list carefully, and message the host if you need a specific item like a coffee maker or pack-and-play, many will throw it in for free.
dmv.ny.gov/tickets/seat-belts-and-child-restraint-systemsWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for RV rentals in New City?
Most New City hosts offer a flexible menu of add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include camping kits (chairs, table, outdoor rug), kitchen kits (pots, plates, utensils), linens and bedding, generators, bike racks, propane tanks pre-filled, and pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's location somewhere in Rockland County, but as mentioned, delivery to Harriman, Bear Mountain, or your home is available from many hosts for an added fee. Mileage policies vary too: some listings include 100 to 150 free miles per day, while others offer unlimited mileage for longer trips. Pro tip: bundling delivery plus a camping kit often costs less than buying the gear yourself, and you arrive at your campsite ready to relax instead of unpack.
dot.ny.gov/indexHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides if anything changes. Your total covers the nightly rate, RVezy service fee, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons or delivery fees the host has listed. A refundable security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment, typically authorized on your card around pickup, and released after your trip once the RV is returned in good shape, on time, with the agreed fuel and tank levels. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, refuel before returning, and dump the tanks if your host requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I park an RV overnight in New City or do I have to stay in a campground?
For overnight RV stays near New City, plan on a campground, a residential driveway, or private property rather than public street parking. The Town of Clarkstown (which includes New City) restricts overnight parking of recreational vehicles on public streets, so a campground like Beaver Pond, Croton Point, or Newburgh KOA is your best bet. If you are visiting family, parking an RV in their driveway for a few nights is generally fine, just confirm the driveway can handle the rig's weight and length and check any HOA rules. Pro tip: if you are using New City as a launch point, ask your host about a delivery-and-pickup arrangement so you do not have to find parking at all.
