Campgrounds near Newburgh
Newburgh sits on the west bank of the Hudson River in Orange County, roughly 70 miles north of Manhattan in the mid-Hudson Valley. The area works as a practical base for RV travelers combining Hudson River sightseeing with state-park hiking, and it puts several distinct campground styles within an hour's drive.
Closer in, the New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday is set in the Hudson Valley with wooded and open sites for tents and RVs, cabins, and full-hookup RV sites that can accommodate rigs up to 90 feet. Private family parks such as Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River and Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc add pool, beach, and activity-driven options for travelers with kids.
For state-park camping, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park sits about half an hour east across the river, and Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park lies south along the Palisades Parkway. Harriman covers roughly 46,000 acres in Rockland County, directly adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area.
Things to do near Newburgh
The Hudson Highlands are the main draw. Harriman State Park has an extensive network of hiking trails including portions of the Appalachian Trail, plus swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati. Bear Mountain State Park sits at its northern end.
At Fahnestock, Canopus Lake anchors the park with a sandy shore and picnic area, and fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and the park's four ponds targets bass, pickerel, perch, and brook and rainbow trout, with rowboats and kayaks available for rental. The nearby Pelton Pond area offers easy loop hiking.
Off-park, day trips include West Point, Storm King Art Center, Hudson River cruises, the Franklin D. Roosevelt home, Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, and Hudson Valley wineries.

State-park campgrounds around Newburgh operate on a defined warm-weather season. Beaver Pond typically opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only through early May, with the regular reservation season running from early May through mid-October. The Clarence Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate construction of a new bathhouse, though the park itself and the Group Wilderness Campground remain open.
Summer weekends fill fastest. Harriman is close to New York City and a favored weekend getaway, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Fall brings foliage and cooler nights, and shoulder-season sites are easier to secure midweek.
Winter closes most tent and trailer camping in the region. The KOA operates seasonally with its pool open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, so travelers should confirm dates directly before booking off-season stays.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book a campground near Newburgh
New York State Parks use the ReserveAmerica system. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at 8AM Monday through Friday and 9AM on weekends between March 15 and Labor Day. Same-day reservations at NY state park campgrounds are allowed until 3PM on the day of arrival, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Because Clarence Fahnestock's campground is closed for the 2026 season, travelers targeting that park should plan for Beaver Pond or private options instead. Private campgrounds including the Newburgh KOA, Jellystone Lazy River, and Sylvan Lake Beach Park book directly through their own websites, each with its own booking window and cancellation policies. Peak summer weekends and holiday periods should be locked in months ahead.
What to expect
Amenity level varies sharply by campground. The Newburgh KOA offers full hookups and family-focused facilities: two swimming pools, a fishing pond, jumping pillow, climbing wall, basketball, mini golf, an inflatable cinema, fun-cycle rentals, and a dog park, with RV sites accommodating rigs up to 90 feet. State-park sites are more rustic.
Beaver Pond has no electrical hookups and accommodates trailers or RVs up to 30 feet on select sites, with a central comfort station, showers, laundry, and a dump station. Alcohol and pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond. Sites include a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill.
Black bears inhabit the Harriman and Bear Mountain area, so food should be stored securely, and deer ticks are present through the warm months. Cell service is spotty inside the state parks.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Newburgh, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Newburgh, NY?
RV rental in Newburgh, NY is an affordable alternative to Hudson Valley hotels. On RVezy you will typically find travel trailers from about $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $150 to $250, and larger Class A motorhomes from $225 to $375. Prices peak from June through mid-October when fall foliage and West Point football weekends drive demand. For a cheap RV rental in Newburgh, look at midweek trips, travel trailers (which require a tow vehicle), and shoulder months like late April or early November. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book listings and compare total trip cost (including cleaning, mileage, and generator fees) before you commit.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newburgh,%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Newburgh, NY?
Good news: a regular New York State driver's license (or any standard US or Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Newburgh, NY. There is no special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy, even for Class A rigs up to 40 feet. RVezy approved drivers must generally be 25 or older, and ID is verified inside the platform during checkout. Visiting from overseas? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward the Newburgh pickup process really is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental in Newburgh, NY covered by protection or insurance?
Every RVezy booking in Newburgh includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore the Hudson Valley with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), and the plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on the New York State Thruway or at a campground. Roadside help is built in too, covering flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, and towing. Pro tip: review the coverage options carefully at booking. A small bump up in protection often costs less than a tank of fuel and makes the whole trip more relaxing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Newburgh RV rental?
Booking is low risk: RVezy sets a standard cancellation policy that applies to every Newburgh RV rental, including a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in a great rig with confidence. The refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel. Hosts do not set their own cancellation terms, which keeps things consistent and fair across every booking. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your payment or provides travel credits. Pro tip: book early to secure the best motorhome rental in Newburgh for fall foliage weekends, and reach out to RVezy support if your plans change. They are available before, during, and after every trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Newburgh, NY?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Newburgh, NY is easy to find. Just flip on the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) in their rigs. Many ask for a small pet fee or extra cleaning charge, which is clearly listed before you book. The Hudson Valley is a fantastic place to travel with pups: Storm King State Park and Schunemunk State Park both allow leashed dogs on trails, and the New York City North/Newburgh KOA in nearby Plattekill has a KampK9 off-leash dog park. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules and ask about nearby dog-friendly wineries like Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville.
parks.ny.gov/recreation/pets/Can the RV be delivered to me in Newburgh, NY?
Yes, RV delivery in Newburgh is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather not drive a big rig through I-84 traffic or across the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. Many local hosts will deliver the motorhome or travel trailer to your campground, a friend's driveway, or a Hudson Valley event venue, then handle the full setup (leveling, hookups, slide-outs, awning) and walk you through every system. Just filter by Delivery on RVezy to see options. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location. Pro tip: delivery to nearby spots like Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park or the Newburgh KOA is a fan favorite. You arrive, the RV is ready, and your trip starts stress-free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newburgh,%20New%20YorkHow far can I travel from Newburgh on an RV road trip?

Many RVezy hosts in the Hudson Valley offer unlimited mileage or generous daily allowances, which is ideal for longer loops. Pro tip: check each listing's mileage policy carefully. If you're planning a big Northeast loop, an RV rental with unlimited mileage will save you serious money.

parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time of year for an RV rental in Newburgh, NY?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Newburgh is late April through late October, with two standout windows. Late May through June brings 70-80°F days, blooming Hudson Valley orchards, and fewer crowds. Then mid-September through late October delivers the legendary fall foliage that draws photographers from around the world, with crisp 50-70°F days perfect for hiking Storm King and Breakneck Ridge. July and August are warm (averaging 75-85°F) and great for swimming at Lake Tiorati. Winters are cold (often 20-35°F with snow), but a few year-round parks like Black Bear RV Park stay open for adventurous campers. Pro tip: book your foliage-season RV rental in New York at least 2 to 3 months ahead. October weekends sell out first.
weather.gov/aly/I'm a first-time renter, is driving an RV around Newburgh hard?
Relax, first time renting an RV in the Hudson Valley is easier than it looks. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, water, propane, generator, and dump procedures, so you don't leave the driveway with question marks. Newburgh sits right at the junction of I-84 and I-87 (the New York State Thruway), both wide, RV-friendly highways with plenty of truck stops. Stick to those routes and skip the Hutchinson and Saw Mill River Parkways, which prohibit RVs. Pro tip: if you're nervous about size, start with a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Newburgh, plan your first night close (the Newburgh KOA is only 20 minutes away), and use that night to get comfortable with all the systems.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/parkways%20info%20doc.htmWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV during the trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Newburgh comes with 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. On top of that, your host is just a message away through the RVezy app, and most Hudson Valley hosts respond quickly to questions like how to reset the inverter or relight the water heater. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave Newburgh, and snap photos of the RV hookups and control panels during your walkthrough. They are a lifesaver when you are setting up at a campground at dusk.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Newburgh RV rental into Canada or other states?
Cross-border and interstate trips from Newburgh are absolutely doable, and the location is perfect for it. You're 60 miles from NYC, 5 hours from Niagara Falls, 6 hours from Montreal, and 4 hours from Boston, so a multi-state Northeast RV road trip from Newburgh is one of the most popular itineraries on the platform. Travel into Canada is allowed with many hosts, but you'll need to confirm in advance via the RVezy message system because insurance and protection must be set up properly before crossing. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: if you're heading to Canada, bring your passport, vehicle registration paperwork from the host, and written permission. Border agents at Champlain, NY routinely ask for all three.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Newburgh?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to estimate. Class B campervans average around 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG, and Class A rigs run 6-10 MPG. New York gas prices in the Newburgh area typically sit around $3.40-$3.90 per gallon for regular and a bit more for diesel, slightly cheaper than NYC but higher than Pennsylvania. For a typical 4-day, 400-mile Hudson Valley loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $150-$200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Pilot or Love's truck stops along I-84 in Port Jervis or off I-87 in New Paltz. Prices are noticeably lower than the in-town stations near downtown Newburgh.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Newburgh?
For the best Newburgh RV trip, book your campground as soon as your dates are confirmed, especially for summer and fall. New York State Parks like Harriman (Beaver Pond) and Clarence Fahnestock open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime weekends fill within hours. Private parks like the Newburgh KOA and Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Gardiner book 2-4 months out for July, August, and foliage weekends. For midweek or shoulder-season trips, 2-3 weeks is usually fine. Pro tip: if your top pick is full, check Hipcamp for private farm and winery sites near New Paltz and Walden, many of which take last-minute bookings even in peak season.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Newburgh, NY?
Driving an RV around Newburgh is straightforward once you know two rules: stick to interstates and avoid the parkways. I-84 (east-west) and I-87/New York State Thruway (north-south) both intersect right at Newburgh and are designed for trucks and RVs. However, the Palisades Interstate Parkway, Taconic State Parkway, and Hutchinson River Parkway prohibit commercial vehicles and most RVs due to low bridge clearances (some as low as 7 feet). Hudson Valley terrain is gently rolling, not mountainous, so grades are mild. Winter (December-March) can bring snow and ice, so check NY 511 before traveling. Pro tip: the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge on I-84 is RV-friendly and offers stunning Hudson River views. It beats every parkway crossing.
511ny.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Newburgh?
Most campgrounds near Newburgh are well-equipped for a comfortable RV trip. Private parks like the New York City North/Newburgh KOA, Black Bear RV Park, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Gardiner offer 30/50 amp electric, water, sewer hookups, Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, dump stations, and propane refills on-site. State park campgrounds like Beaver Pond (Harriman) and Clarence Fahnestock typically provide electric and water but no sewer at the site, with central dump stations and potable water fill stations. Pro tip: if you're booking a state park, plan a mid-trip stop at the Newburgh KOA or Black Bear RV Park to dump tanks and top off water. Both welcome non-guests for a small fee and make multi-park Hudson Valley itineraries effortless.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's included inside RVs available in Newburgh?
RVs listed on RVezy in Newburgh come fully equipped for a comfortable Hudson Valley trip. Expect real beds (queen or king in most Class A and Class C rigs), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for every traveler. Most rigs also include a TV, propane, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid stays. Many hosts add linens, pots and pans, camp chairs, and outdoor mats so you do not have to overpack. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities tab and message your host to confirm what is included. Some Newburgh hosts even add bikes or kayaks for exploring the Walkway Over the Hudson.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newburgh,%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options are common for RV rentals in Newburgh?
Newburgh hosts offer a great range of add-ons to customize your trip. Popular extras include linen and kitchen packages ($25 to $75), outdoor gear like camp chairs, grills, and firewood bundles, generator hours for off-grid camping (often $3 to $5 per hour), bike or kayak rentals (perfect for the Hudson River), and Wi-Fi hotspots for remote work trips. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Newburgh, New Windsor, or nearby towns like Wallkill and Cornwall. Mileage policies vary: some hosts offer unlimited miles, others include 100 to 150 miles per day with a small per-mile charge after. Pro tip: bundle delivery, generator hours, and a linen package upfront. It almost always costs less than adding them after pickup, and your trip starts smoother.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newburgh,%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Newburgh RV rental?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure: you pay the full trip cost through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, not charged, and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any issues, do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff in Newburgh, document the fuel and propane levels, and keep all communication inside the RVezy app. Pro tip: dump tanks and refuel before returning. Skipping either is the most common reason renters lose part of a deposit, and both are easy at truck stops along I-84.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Newburgh in winter?
Yes, winter RV rental in Newburgh is available and can be a magical experience, think snowy Catskills views, cozy heated interiors, and zero campground crowds. Several RVezy hosts keep winter-ready rigs on the platform with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, extra insulation, and propane furnaces sized for Hudson Valley cold (which regularly dips into the 20s and teens). Black Bear RV Park in Florida, NY stays open year-round with heated water lines, making it a reliable winter base. Pro tip: for a winter Newburgh RV trip, plan shorter drives, keep your fresh tank partially full with antifreeze in the lines, run the furnace at night, and pair your stay with a day trip to Hunter Mountain or Belleayre for skiing, just 90 minutes away.
