Campgrounds near Newfield, New York
Newfield sits in southern Tompkins County, a short drive from Ithaca and the southern tip of Cayuga Lake. The town serves as a quieter, more rural base for exploring the Finger Lakes region, with gorge parks, waterfalls, wineries, and Cornell University all within a 20-minute drive. RV travelers have a mix of private and public options close by. Pinecreek Campground sits on 42 wooded acres in Newfield itself, with full-hookup pull-throughs, tent sites, cabins, and a pool. Robert H Treman State Park and Buttermilk Falls State Park, both just north toward Ithaca, offer state-run campgrounds inside Finger Lakes gorge parks famous for waterfall hikes. Spruce Row Campground, north of Ithaca near Cayuga Lake, runs as a larger family RV resort with full hookups and on-site amenities. Myers Park, a town-owned park in Lansing on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake, rounds out the options with a small lakeside RV loop and a public marina.
Things to do near Newfield
Hiking the gorges is the headline activity. Robert H Treman State Park has trails that follow Enfield Glen past 12 waterfalls, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, plus a stream-fed swimming pool beneath a waterfall. Buttermilk Falls State Park sits a couple of miles away and features a 165-foot cascade where Buttermilk Creek tumbles into a natural swimming pool, with a gorge trail climbing past 10 waterfalls, plus a trail connection to Treman. Cayuga Lake itself opens up boating, kayaking, swimming, and fishing, with public launches at Myers Park in Lansing. The Cayuga Wine Trail and Finger Lakes breweries run along both shores. Downtown Ithaca adds restaurants, the Ithaca Farmers Market, and Cornell University attractions. The historic Newfield Covered Bridge sits in the village.

Camping near Newfield is firmly a warm-weather activity. The two nearby state parks, Robert H Treman and Buttermilk Falls, run a roughly mid-May through early-November season, with cabins available later than tent and RV sites at some locations. Private campgrounds follow a similar calendar: Spruce Row and Pinecreek typically open in early May and close around mid-October, and Myers Park operates as a seasonal town campground through the warm months. Late June through Labor Day is the peak window, when state park weekends, holiday weekends, and Cornell-related events draw heavy demand. July and August bring warm, humid days well suited to gorge swimming holes, but afternoon thunderstorms are common. September delivers cooler nights, lower bug counts, and the start of foliage season, which peaks in October across the Finger Lakes. Winter closes the state park campgrounds entirely, and snowfall is heavy enough that most private grounds also shut down.

How to book campgrounds near Newfield
New York State Parks, including Robert H Treman and Buttermilk Falls, are booked through the ReserveAmerica system, not by calling the individual campgrounds. Campsites can be reserved up to 9 months in advance, with sites opening in the reservation window at 8 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends during the main booking season. Same-day reservations are accepted until 3 p.m. for campsites only. Cabins require a 2-night minimum in non-peak season, with a 3-night minimum on Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day weekends, and a 7-night minimum during peak season. For summer weekends and any holiday, booking the moment the 9-month window opens is the safest approach, since electric sites at Treman fill quickly. Spruce Row and Pinecreek take reservations directly through their own websites and phone lines, with weekly and seasonal rates available. Myers Park in Lansing handles its limited campsites through the Town of Lansing parks office, with a portion of sites held by long-term seasonal campers, so availability for short stays is tight.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of wooded and open sites on rolling Finger Lakes terrain. State park campgrounds are rustic by design: Robert H Treman has 70 campsites including 11 with electric hookups, no water or sewer at sites, plus flush toilets, free showers, and a dump station, along with 14 rental cabins. Buttermilk Falls is smaller, with about 25 tent and RV sites and 18 rental cabins, back-in sites limited to roughly 20-foot vehicles, and most sites without full hookups. For 50-amp service and pull-throughs, the private grounds are the better fit: Pinecreek and Spruce Row both run pools, playgrounds, fishing ponds, and camp stores. Cell coverage is variable in the gorges, and roads into the state parks are paved but narrow in spots. Pets are allowed at most campgrounds, and proof of rabies vaccination is required at the state parks.
