Campgrounds near North Hills
North Hills sits on the North Shore of Long Island in Nassau County, roughly 20 miles east of Manhattan. There are no campgrounds inside the village itself, so RV travelers typically base themselves at parks on Long Island, in the outer boroughs, or across the Hudson in the Lower Hudson Valley, then drive in for day trips.
The closest options span very different experiences. Floyd Bennett Field, part of Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn, is open April through October and offers tent and RV camping, with generators permitted during limited hours at RV sites and a dump station on site. Liberty Harbor RV Park sits on Jersey City's waterfront across the Hudson, offering skyline and Statue of Liberty views from many sites within a fenced marina lot with basic hookups.
For a more traditional outdoor stay, Heckscher State Park offers 67 sites on Long Island's Great South Bay shoreline in Suffolk County, with restrooms, showers, a dump station, and picnic tables at each site. Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park and Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island round out the choices for travelers willing to drive north or take a ferry.
Things to do near North Hills
Long Island's North Shore offers beaches, harbor towns, and short drives to Sands Point Preserve and Old Westbury Gardens. Manhattan is roughly a 30 to 45 minute drive or LIRR ride from North Hills, putting museums, Broadway, and the waterfront within reach as day trips.
Campground-based activities depend on where travelers stay. Heckscher State Park sits along the Great South Bay and offers bay swimming, boat launching, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding, along with four miles of paved multi-use trails. Harriman State Park, home to Beaver Pond, has extensive trail systems, lakes, and swimming beaches within an easy drive from New York City.
At Floyd Bennett Field, visitors can walk wooded paths, watch for birds and horseshoe crabs, and try horseback riding, kayaking, or archery, while biking trails weave through nearby Fort Tilden.

Most campgrounds near North Hills operate on a warm-season schedule. Heckscher State Park runs from late May through early September, Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island is typically available from mid-May through mid-October, and Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is generally open April through October. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is the notable exception, staying open year-round for RVers who want winter access to the city.
Summer weekends are the most competitive window. Harriman is a popular weekend getaway from New York City, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Mosquitoes and biting flies can be a significant issue in summer at coastal sites like Floyd Bennett Field and Watch Hill, so strong repellent is recommended.
Shoulder-season trips in May, September, and early October generally deliver cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations. Winter narrows the options sharply to urban RV parks with hookups.

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

fueleconomy.gov/feg/rv.shtmlWhat's driving an RV around North Hills and Long Island like?
Driving an RV around North Hills and Long Island is straightforward once you're familiar with the vehicle's size. Local roads like Northern Boulevard and the LIE (I-495) are well-maintained, but watch for low parkway clearances: Long Island parkways such as the Northern State and Southern State prohibit RVs and trucks. Stick to the LIE, Sunrise Highway (Route 27), and major routes. Traffic is heaviest on summer Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons heading east.

rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my North Hills RV rental into New York City or across state lines?
