Campgrounds near North Merrick
North Merrick sits on the south shore of Long Island in Nassau County, roughly 30 miles east of Manhattan. The area has no campgrounds within the hamlet itself, so RV renters typically head east along the Long Island shoreline, west toward Brooklyn and Jersey City, or north into the Hudson Highlands.
The closest options range from urban to remote. Floyd Bennett Field - Gateway National Recreational Area, in Brooklyn, offers tent and RV camping with a dump station on site and generators permitted during limited hours at RV sites. Heckscher State Park on the Great South Bay accommodates both tent campers and RVs, with full hookup sites available for rigs up to 50 feet on select loops; the campground provides restrooms, showers, and a dump station.
For a car-free beach experience, Watch Hill Campground - Fire Island National Seashore on the island's eastern end includes 20 sand tent sites and 8 safari tent sites, reachable by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue. Farther inland, Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park is a primitive campground adjoining Lake Welch, with no electrical hookups and select sites able to accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet long. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City rounds out the list for renters who want a hookup site with Manhattan views.
Things to do near North Merrick
Long Island's south shore is built around water. From Heckscher State Park, the Great South Bay provides opportunities for bay swimming, boat launching, sail boarding, kayaking, and canoeing, and four miles of paved multi-use trails attract bicycle riders, walkers, and nature lovers.
At Floyd Bennett Field, the setting is unusual: the campground sits in the woodland habitat of the old airfield, with restored historic aircraft, Nike missile sites, wooded paths for birding, plus horseback riding, kayaking, and archery. The adjacent Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge holds 300 species of migratory birds, including willets and green herons in spring and summer.
Watch Hill Campground - Fire Island National Seashore borders the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, the only federally designated wilderness in New York State. Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park puts hikers on a trail network of more than 200 miles, with easy access to Lake Welch's swimming beach.

The camping calendar around North Merrick is tightly seasonal. Most of the surrounding public campgrounds operate from mid-spring through mid-fall and close for the winter. Heckscher State Park campgrounds typically reopen from late May through early September. Watch Hill Campground sites are available typically from mid-May weekend to mid-October. Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is open April through October, and Beaver Pond runs from April to the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend.
Summer is peak season on Long Island and in the Hudson Highlands, and demand runs hot. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. July and August bring warm ocean water and the busiest beaches, but also the heaviest bug pressure at coastal sites. Mosquitoes at Floyd Bennett Field can be heavy from July through October, and ticks are a concern in the Harriman backcountry.
Late May, June, and September tend to offer the best mix of open facilities, mild temperatures, and thinner crowds. Winter camping in the region is limited to a few private RV parks.

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

How to book near North Merrick
Reservation systems vary by park, so plan the booking route before setting a date. New York State Parks, including Heckscher and Beaver Pond, use ReserveAmerica. Campsite reservations can be made for today and up to 9 months in advance. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites, either online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267.
Floyd Bennett Field uses the federal system. Reservations can be made online at recreation.gov, and advance reservations are required at least a day ahead of arrival. Watch Hill camping reservations are handled by the concessioner LoveFINS, with rate and reservation information on LoveFins.com. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City books directly through the operator's website.
Expect Harriman weekends, Watch Hill, and Floyd Bennett summer weekends to sell out well before arrival.
What to expect near North Merrick
Sites in this region skew rustic. Hookups are the exception, not the rule. At Floyd Bennett Field, there is no electricity or water at tent sites, and RV sites have no water or electric hookups either, though there is a dump station and generators are allowed from 8 AM to 10 PM. Beaver Pond has no electrical hookups for trailers.
RV length limits matter. Beaver Pond caps trailers and RVs at 30 feet on select sites. Heckscher accepts rigs up to 50 feet on some loops. Watch Hill is tent-only and requires ferry or boat transport, meaning gear must be carried in by hand or cart from the dock.
Rules can be strict. Alcohol is not permitted at Beaver Pond, and pets are not allowed in the campground or at Lake Welch. Bug spray, a shade plan, and firewood purchased locally are essentials from June through September.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near North Merrick, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in North Merrick?
RV rental in North Merrick is often more affordable than traditional Long Island vacation rentals, especially when you split costs with family or friends. On RVezy, campervans typically start around $125 to $175 per night, travel trailers run about $100 to $200, and larger Class A or Class C motorhomes range from $200 to $350 per night. Pricing depends on the RV's age, size, and season. For a cheap RV rental in North Merrick, book midweek, travel in the shoulder months of May or late September, and consider travel trailers which tend to offer the best value. Many local hosts also offer weekly discounts of 10 to 20 percent for trips longer than seven days.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Merrick%2C%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in New York?
Good news for first-time renters: a standard New York driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in North Merrick. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required, even for larger Class A motorhomes. To book on RVezy, you must be at least 25 years old as part of the approved driver requirements, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country driver's license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. Most first-time renters are pleasantly surprised by how straightforward the process is, especially with the host's walkthrough at pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in North Merrick protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, and this is one of the biggest reasons guests feel confident booking through RVezy. Every RV rental in North Merrick includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right into your booking. The protection plan covers most damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real peace of mind on the road. During checkout you can choose between coverage tiers so you can pick the level that matches your comfort. It is designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV rentals. If you are a first-time renter heading to busy Long Island beaches, selecting a higher tier can help you drive with more confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my North Merrick RV trip?
You can book with confidence. RVezy uses a standardized cancellation policy set by RVezy (not the individual host), including a grace period right after booking when eligible. The refund you receive depends on how far in advance you cancel and the circumstances of the trip. Because cancellation terms can be nuanced, the most up-to-date details live in the RVezy Help Center, where you can see exactly how your timeline applies. For popular summer dates near Nickerson Beach, booking earlier gives you more flexibility within the grace window if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a North Merrick RV rental?
Yes, four-legged road-trippers are welcome on many trips. RVezy has a Pet-Friendly filter that instantly shows you every pet-friendly RV rental in North Merrick, so you can book without guessing. Once you're on the road, Long Island has plenty of dog-loving stops: leashed dogs are welcome on many trails at Bethpage State Park and at Eisenhower Park just minutes from North Merrick. Note that pets are generally not allowed on the main swimming beaches between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Message the host before booking to confirm pet rules and any cleaning fee, and ask about local dog parks they recommend.
parks.ny.gov/documents/RulesAndRegulations.pdfCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in North Merrick?
Yes, RV delivery in North Merrick is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather not drive a motorhome through Nassau County traffic. Many hosts deliver the RV directly to your campground (like Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach), to your driveway, or to a family member's home, then handle the full setup and orientation so you can step in and start your vacation. Use the Delivery filter when searching to see hosts who offer this service. Delivery fees are usually based on distance, often $2 to $5 per mile round trip. Delivery is a great option if you want a motorhome rental in North Merrick but don't want to navigate unfamiliar routes in a 30-foot rig.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Merrick%2C%20New%20YorkHow many miles a day do hosts allow, and can I find unlimited mileage?
Most hosts in the North Merrick area include between 100 and 150 free miles per day, which is plenty for a typical Long Island RV trip exploring the South Shore, North Fork, or Hamptons. Additional miles typically run $0.30 to $0.50 each. Planning a longer haul up to the Catskills or out to Montauk? Look for listings that advertise RV rental with unlimited mileage, which exist on RVezy and are ideal for big road trips. For a sense of distances from North Merrick: Montauk is roughly 95 miles east, the Catskills around 120 miles north, and Niagara Falls about 425 miles. Estimate your route before booking, then filter for a mileage policy that fits.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Merrick%2C%20New%20YorkWhere can I camp with my RV near North Merrick?
You have several solid options within an hour of North Merrick. Nickerson Beach Park Campground in Lido Beach is the closest oceanfront RV park (about 15 minutes south) and one of the most popular spots on Long Island, with hookups right by the Atlantic. Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage is just 20 minutes north and open year-round with basic hookups. Heading east, Heckscher State Park in East Islip (about 40 minutes) offers wooded sites near Great South Bay, and Indian Island County Park in Riverhead (about 1 hour) sits along the Peconic River. Nickerson Beach books up fast for summer, so a Nassau County Leisure Pass and an early reservation help secure your spot for RV camping in North Merrick.
nassaucountyny.gov/1614/Nickerson-Beach-ParkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from North Merrick?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for a North Merrick RV trip, with June and September being the sweet spots. Summer days average around 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit with high humidity, while fall brings crisp 55 to 65 degree weather, fewer crowds, and beautiful foliage out toward the North Fork wineries. July and August are peak beach season (think Jones Beach and Long Beach), but campgrounds book months in advance. Spring (April to early May) is quieter and cooler, with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. Shoulder season is the smart-money move: better rates on your RV rental in New York and easier reservations at Nickerson Beach or Heckscher State Park.
weather.gov/okx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will be more than okay. First time renting an RV is something thousands of people do every season, and Long Island hosts are great at setting you up for success. Every RVezy booking includes a hands-on orientation at pickup where your host walks you through driving, hookups, slide-outs, the generator, and the kitchen and bathroom systems. You can also message your host anytime during your trip with questions. For driving comfort, start with a Class B campervan or smaller Class C motorhome, both handle like a large van. In Nassau County, stick to the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway. State parkways like the Southern State and Meadowbrook Parkway have low bridges that prohibit RVs and trailers.
dot.ny.gov/display/programs/repository/Parkways%20Truck%20Bus.pdfWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in North Merrick comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with the renter protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, or mechanical issue is just a phone call away from being handled. The roadside team can dispatch help wherever you are, whether that's a campsite at Heckscher State Park, a winery on the North Fork, or the side of the LIE. Your host is also typically available by message for quick questions like how to reset the inverter or refill the propane. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave, and snap a photo of the roadside assistance details so you have everything ready if you need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my North Merrick RV rental to Canada or another state?
Interstate road trips are absolutely on the table, and an RV road trip from North Merrick opens up the entire Northeast. Popular routes include the Jersey Shore (about 90 minutes south), the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania (about 2.5 hours west), Acadia National Park in Maine (about 8 hours northeast), and the White Mountains of New Hampshire (about 6 hours). Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the host's insurance, so message before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Build extra time into your route for tolls and traffic getting off Long Island, the bridges and tunnels into the city can slow down considerably in summer.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what does gas cost?
Realistic expectations help you budget right: campervans (Class B) get around 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 MPG, and larger Class A rigs come in around 7 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect a 25 to 40 percent drop in fuel economy versus driving it unloaded. Gas prices in the New York City metro tend to run higher than the national average, and diesel a bit more. For a typical 4-day trip from North Merrick to Montauk and back (about 200 miles total), budget roughly $60 to $120 in fuel for a Class C. Fill up off-island in New Jersey or upstate New York when possible, prices are usually noticeably lower.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near North Merrick?
For summer weekends, book as early as you can: Long Island campgrounds are some of the most competitive in the country. Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach often fills for the Memorial Day to Labor Day window within days of reservations opening, so aim for 3 to 6 months ahead. New York State Parks like Heckscher and Hither Hills use ReserveAmerica with a 9-month rolling booking window, so set a calendar reminder. Suffolk County Parks (Indian Island, Cathedral Pines, Smith Point) take reservations through the county parks system. Weekdays and shoulder season open up much more availability, even Nickerson Beach often has Tuesday-through-Thursday openings in June and September.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What should I know about driving an RV in and around North Merrick?
Long Island driving has one critical rule for RVs: stay off the state parkways. The Southern State, Northern State, Meadowbrook, Wantagh, Sagtikos, and Ocean Parkways all have low stone-arch bridges and legally prohibit RVs, trailers, and commercial vehicles. Stick to the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Sunrise Highway (Route 27), Northern Boulevard (Route 25A), and Hempstead Turnpike. Traffic in Nassau County peaks weekdays 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 7 PM, so plan departures and returns around those windows. If you're nervous about navigating the LIE in a larger motorhome rental in North Merrick, book a host who offers delivery so the RV is dropped at your campsite and you never need to touch a parkway exit.
dot.ny.gov/display/programs/repository/Parkways%20Truck%20Bus.pdfWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near North Merrick?
Most local campgrounds offer the essentials and then some. Nickerson Beach has electric and water hookups, a dump station, hot showers, restrooms, a pool, and direct beach access. Heckscher State Park provides water at most sites and electric at many, plus shower buildings and a dump station. Indian Island in Riverhead offers full restrooms, showers, and a dump station along the Peconic. To fill fresh water and empty tanks on travel days, most state parks and Suffolk County parks have dump stations free to registered campers (small fee for non-campers). Not every site has sewer, so pack a 20-foot sewer hose and a water pressure regulator. Those two small items make RV camping in North Merrick smooth at any campground.
nassaucountyny.gov/1614/Nickerson-Beach-ParkWhat's actually inside the RVs available in North Merrick?
Today's rentals are essentially apartments on wheels. A typical motorhome rental in North Merrick includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (sleeping 4 to 8 total), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, stove, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, a furnace, and a generator or shore power hookup. Many include a TV, and some hosts add WiFi hotspots, outdoor speakers, or solar. Every designated travel seat has a seatbelt. Campervans are more compact (sleeping 2 to 4) but include the same essentials in a smaller footprint. Filter listings by sleep count and review photos carefully, and message the host to confirm anything specific like a CPAP outlet, baby gear hookups, or cell signal boosters.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Merrick%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons can I get with my RV rental in North Merrick?
Hosts on RVezy offer a range of useful extras to make your trip easier. Common add-ons include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, pans, and utensils ($25 to $50), camping chairs and outdoor tables, generators, propane fills, bike racks, kayak or SUP carriers, and pet kits. Some hosts also offer prepaid dump and refill service so you can return the RV without worrying about tanks. Pickup and drop-off are usually at the host's home in or near North Merrick, but many offer delivery to local campgrounds or your driveway for a per-mile fee. Bundle add-ons when you book rather than later, hosts often discount packages and you'll lock in the gear you need for your family RV trip in North Merrick.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Merrick%2C%20New%20YorkHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host in cash. That includes the nightly rate, protection plan, taxes, and any add-ons you select. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held separately from your booking payment, then released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues, take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, follow the host's fuel and tank instructions, and report any concerns right away. Keep all communication with your host in the RVezy app to create a clear record that protects both of you.
