Camping near Northampton, New York
Northampton is a small hamlet in the Town of Southampton on eastern Long Island in Suffolk County, positioned between the North Fork wine country and the South Fork's Hamptons. The area sits within reach of the Long Island Sound coastline to the north and the Great South Bay and Fire Island barrier system to the south, giving RV travelers access to two different shoreline experiences from one base.
The closest developed campground with vehicle access is Wildwood State Park in Wading River, a New York State Parks facility on a bluff above Long Island Sound. Additional options include Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island National Seashore, the privately run Eastern Long Island Kampground on the North Fork, and Hammonasset Beach State Park across the Sound in Madison, Connecticut, which is reachable by the Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point.
Riverdale Farm CampSites, a private farm-style campground, rounds out the nearby choices for travelers who want a rural setting away from the beach.
Things to do near Northampton
Beach time dominates most itineraries. Wildwood State Park has two miles of Long Island Sound shoreline for swimming and saltwater fishing, plus roughly twelve miles of marked hiking trails through hardwood forest. Watch Hill on Fire Island offers ocean beaches, a short nature trail, and access to the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, the only federally designated wilderness in New York State.
The North Fork adds a different pace, with vineyards, farm stands, and the waterfront village of Greenport and its Shelter Island ferry. Families often mix beach days at Hammonasset with a stop at its Meigs Point Nature Center, which runs interpretive programs during the summer season. Kayaking, cycling on paved park roads, and surf casting for striped bass and bluefish round out the day-activity list.

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

How to book campsites near Northampton
New York State Park sites at Wildwood are booked through ReserveAmerica, online or by phone at 1-800-456-2267. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance, and same-day reservations for campsites are accepted until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival during the operating season. Summer weekends fill quickly, so book as early as possible.
Hammonasset Beach State Park also uses ReserveAmerica, with a booking window of up to eleven months in advance and a maximum stay of twenty-one consecutive days. Watch Hill's family campground and safari tents are booked through the concessioner LoveFINS at lovefins.com, not through Recreation.gov. Eastern Long Island Kampground and Riverdale Farm CampSites take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone.
What to expect at Northampton campgrounds
Wildwood is the main RV-friendly option in the area, with 314 tent and trailer sites, electric and water hookups on many sites, showers, a dump station, and a camp store. Pets are not allowed at Wildwood, and campfires must be in an above-ground metal container that campers bring themselves or rent from the camp store. Hammonasset offers over 550 grassy sites with restrooms, showers, and dump stations. Fire pits are not provided at Hammonasset but can be rented from the camp store, and firewood cannot be brought into the campground due to Asian long-horned beetle restrictions.
Watch Hill is a very different experience. It is accessible only by ferry from Patchogue, by private boat, or on foot, with 20 sand tent sites plus safari-style glamping tents, and no vehicles on the island. Expect to move gear by hand cart along boardwalks, and bring strong insect repellent for the salt marsh and dune areas.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Northampton, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Northampton, NY?
RV rental in Northampton, NY is affordable compared to renting closer to Lake George or Saratoga Springs. On RVezy, travel trailers typically range from about $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes from $225 to $375 per night. Hosts set their own pricing, so booking midweek or in the shoulder season (May or September) often trims 20 to 30 percent off peak summer rates. Filter by Instant Book and look for hosts offering weekly discounts if you are planning a full week on Great Sacandaga Lake. Many first-time renters find an RV trip noticeably cheaper than a lakeside cabin rental in this corner of the Adirondacks.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Northampton%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Northampton, NY?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Northampton, NY. New York State does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for the RVs available on RVezy, even larger Class A motorhomes you might take up Route 30 into the Adirondacks. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your identity right through the booking process, so there's nothing to mail or fax. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club before you fly in, usually for under $20, and you're all set to explore Great Sacandaga Lake.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseIs my RV rental in Northampton protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every RV rental in Northampton, NY booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head up Route 30 toward Northville with confidence. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV and provides financial peace of mind during your trip. During checkout you choose your protection level (this is not set by the host), so you can match coverage to how adventurous your Adirondack RV trip will be. If anything happens, from a flat tire near the Northville Bridge to a slide-out issue at the campground, RVezy support is one phone call away day or night.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Northampton RV trip plans change?
Booking is low risk. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy for every RV rental in Northampton, NY, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in a Great Sacandaga Lake site without second-guessing. The exact refund depends on how far out you cancel and the specific policy applied to your booking. You will see the full cancellation details on the RVezy website during checkout. Book early to secure the best Northampton Beach Campground dates, knowing you have clear flexibility if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Northampton, NY?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Northampton, NY is easy to find. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see plenty of hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Your dog will love it here too: Northampton Beach Campground on Great Sacandaga Lake allows leashed pets in designated loops with proof of rabies vaccination, and the Northville-Placid Trail kicks off just across the bridge in Northville for serious tail-wagging mileage. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and ask about the nearest grassy area at the campsite, since many Northampton hosts are dog people themselves.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/rules-regulationsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Northampton?
Yes, RV delivery in Northampton is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are flying into Albany International Airport and would rather not tow anything yourself. Many RVezy hosts in the Northampton, Mayfield, and Broadalbin area will deliver to Northampton Beach Campground or a private lakefront property, then level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every switch and tank. Delivery fees usually depend on mileage from the host's location, so filter by Delivery on RVezy and look for hosts based near Route 30. It is an ideal setup for a first-time renter: you arrive, your home on wheels is ready, and you are swimming in Great Sacandaga Lake within the hour.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Northampton%2C%20New%20YorkHow does mileage work, and can I find an RV rental with unlimited mileage?
Mileage is flexible on RVezy, and yes, RV rental with unlimited mileage is available in Northampton, NY if you plan to roam. Each host sets a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 free miles per day) plus a per-mile rate beyond that, and you will see this clearly on the listing before you book. For a loop around Great Sacandaga Lake (about 50 miles) or a day trip to Saratoga Springs (about 40 miles each way), the standard allowance is plenty. If you are planning a bigger Adirondack road trip up Route 30 to Tupper Lake or Lake Placid, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host directly, as many are happy to add extra miles into your quote.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Northampton%2C%20New%20YorkWhat are the best campgrounds near Northampton, NY for an RV?
You have great options. The headliner is Northampton Beach Campground and Day Use Area on Route 30, a state-run park on Great Sacandaga Lake with around 224 sites, flush toilets, hot showers, a sand beach, and a boat launch. Nearby, Sacandaga Campground (also DEC-run) sits along the Sacandaga River south of Wells and is a quieter, wooded option. Across the lake, Lakeside Camping at Sacandaga in Broadalbin offers full hookups and is a family favorite for RV camping near Northampton. For a private resort vibe, Adirondack Gateway Campground in Gansevoort is about 35 minutes away. State campgrounds are bookable up to 9 months in advance on ReserveAmerica, and lakefront sites at Northampton Beach disappear quickly when summer weekends open.
dec.ny.gov/places/northampton-beach-campground-and-day-use-areaWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Northampton, NY?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for any Northampton, NY RV trip, with the real sweet spot being late June through early September when Great Sacandaga Lake water temperatures reach the mid-70s and daytime highs sit between 75 and 83 degrees Fahrenheit. July and August are warmest and busiest. September is a local favorite: warm days, cool sleeping weather in the 50s, far fewer mosquitoes, and the first hints of Adirondack foliage. By early to mid October, the surrounding hills explode in red and gold, perfect for a leaf-peeping campervan rental Northampton getaway. Winters here are snowy and cold (lows in the teens), so most campgrounds, including Northampton Beach, close after Columbus Day and reopen in mid-May.
weather.gov/aly/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay on the roads around Northampton?
You'll be just fine, and most renters tell us their nerves disappear within the first 20 minutes behind the wheel. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, the propane system, slide-outs, and tank dumping, so you're never left guessing. The roads around Northampton are forgiving for a first time renting an RV: Route 30 is a wide, well-maintained state highway with gentle curves along Great Sacandaga Lake, and the Northville Bridge has plenty of clearance for tall rigs. Avoid narrow back roads like Houseman Street if you're in a Class A. Pro tip: do a slow lap around the Northampton Beach Campground parking lot before heading out, it's the perfect low-pressure warmup.
dot.ny.gov/indexWhat happens if I have a breakdown or problem during my trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance through the protection plan, so whether you have a flat on Route 30 near Mayfield, a dead battery at Northampton Beach Campground, or a propane question at 11 p.m., help is one call away. Your host is also a great first resource for quirks specific to their rig and usually responds quickly through the RVezy app. For medical emergencies, Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville is about 20 minutes from Northampton, and Saratoga Hospital is about 45 minutes east. Save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and plate so you can share details quickly if needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip destinations from Northampton, NY?
An RV road trip from Northampton opens up some of the best of upstate New York and the Adirondacks. Saratoga Springs, with its racetrack, mineral springs, and downtown dining, is just 40 miles east (about 50 minutes). Lake George is 60 miles northeast, roughly 75 minutes, and the perfect family detour. Push north on Route 30 (the Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway) and you'll reach Speculator in 45 minutes, Blue Mountain Lake in about 90 minutes, and Lake Placid in roughly 2.5 hours. Heading west? Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame are 75 miles (1 hour 45 minutes). Pro tip: the Route 30 corridor north through Hamilton County is one of the prettiest motorhome rental Northampton drives in the state.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/scenic-bywaysHow much should I budget for fuel on my Northampton RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's easy to plan for. Most travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves, you'll just pay for your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 mpg loaded). Class C motorhomes average around 8 to 10 mpg, and Class A gas rigs around 6 to 8 mpg. New York gas prices typically run about 30 to 50 cents above the national average. For reference, a 200-mile weekend loop from Northampton to Lake George and back in a Class C burns roughly 22 gallons. Pro tip: fill up in Mayfield or Broadalbin before heading north on Route 30, prices climb noticeably once you're deep in the Adirondack Park where stations are scarcer.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Northampton?
For peak summer weekends on Great Sacandaga Lake, book as early as possible. New York State campgrounds, including Northampton Beach and Sacandaga, open reservations 9 months in advance on ReserveAmerica, and waterfront sites for July 4th, Memorial Day, and Labor Day are typically snapped up within minutes of opening. For midweek summer stays or any time in May, September, or October, you can usually find good availability 2 to 4 weeks out. Private campgrounds like Lakeside Camping at Sacandaga book through their own websites. Set a calendar reminder for exactly 9 months before your target date and log in to ReserveAmerica a few minutes before the morning release to score the best lakefront sites.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Northampton, especially in the off-season?
Driving conditions around Northampton are easy in summer and very manageable in shoulder seasons. Route 30, the main artery along Great Sacandaga Lake, is a well-paved, two-lane state highway with wide shoulders and gentle grades, ideal for any RV. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round, and for the occasional slow-moving farm vehicle in spring. From November through April, expect snow, black ice, and salted roads; the Adirondack foothills can drop a foot of snow overnight. If you're renting in the cold months, stick to plowed state routes and skip narrow lakeshore lanes like North Shore Road in the Town of Day. Pro tip: New York's 511NY service gives live road and weather updates, well worth bookmarking before you roll.
511ny.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Northampton?
Campgrounds around Northampton run from rustic-charming to fully loaded. Northampton Beach Campground (DEC-run) offers flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, potable water fill, a sand beach, boat launch, and a picnic pavilion, but sites are non-hookup, so plan to dry camp with your RV's onboard tanks. Sacandaga Campground is similarly rustic. For full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, and sewer at the site), Lakeside Camping at Sacandaga in Broadalbin and Adirondack Gateway Campground in Gansevoort are the go-to picks. Free dump stations and potable water are available at Northampton Beach for registered guests. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground, the next reliable RV-friendly fill is back in Mayfield.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/campingWhat's typically included inside an RV rental in Northampton, NY?
More than you might expect. Most RV rentals in Northampton, NY come fully equipped for comfortable off-grid stays on Great Sacandaga Lake: a real bed (often a queen), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (AC and furnace), and seatbelted seating for travel. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often include a TV, onboard generator, and sometimes a backup camera. Wi-Fi varies, and cell signal on Route 30 around Northampton is solid for Verizon and AT&T but spottier deeper into Hamilton County. Each listing has a detailed amenities checklist, and you can message the host to confirm extras like a coffee maker, outdoor speakers, or a Starlink setup before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Northampton%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Northampton offer useful add-ons that can transform your trip. Popular options include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, bikes, kayaks (a great choice on Great Sacandaga Lake), portable grills, generators, and dump-and-clean services so you do not have to handle tanks at trip's end. Pickup is usually at the host's home or storage lot, but many offer delivery to Northampton Beach Campground or a nearby private rental for a mileage-based fee. Mileage caps and pet fees are shown clearly on the listing. Bundling delivery, setup, and a dump-out service is a smart way to keep a cheap RV rental Northampton trip simple for first-timers, as it skips the steepest learning curves entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Northampton%2C%20New%20YorkHow do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payments are handled through the RVezy platform, with no cash or paper checks to the host. You pay your booking total by credit card when you reserve, which secures the dates for your rent an RV in Northampton plan. A security deposit (set by the host, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card shortly before pickup and released after the trip, assuming the RV returns as it left. To avoid deposit issues, take walk-around photos at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and follow the host's tank-dump instructions. Clean kitchens and empty tanks are the two things hosts notice first.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Northampton RV rental across the border into Canada?
Cross-border trips into Canada are sometimes possible from Northampton, but it depends on the individual host's approval and insurance coverage, so message the host and get written approval before booking. The Canadian border at Champlain, NY is about 3 hours north via I-87, making a Montreal or Ottawa add-on a tempting extension after a few days on Great Sacandaga Lake. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental, as insurance and protection coverage do not extend there. Bring your passport, vehicle registration, and a host-signed cross-border letter if heading to Canada. Many Northampton hosts are happy to approve Canadian trips for experienced renters, so ask early so they can confirm with their insurer before your dates fill up.
