Campgrounds and RV parks near Norwich, NY

Water-based activity anchors most trips. Bowman Lake State Park has a sandy lakefront for swimmers and sunbathers with several picnic areas nearby, and the lake is regularly stocked with trout, while birdwatchers can spot as many as 103 species of birds. At Chenango County Cook Park, guests can fish the 18-acre pond for largemouth bass, pickerel, bullhead, and sunfish from shore or dock, and rent kayaks or pedal boats, with trolling motors only and no swimming. Hikers have plenty of options. Bowman Lake offers over 13 miles of scenic trails for hiking, plus marked snowmobile and cross-country trails for winter use. Cook Park adds 1.5 miles of wooded trails and a 0.5-mile handicapped-accessible path that winds past beaver habitat and diverse birdlife. Tall Pines Campground and River Adventures caters to paddlers on the Chenango, and the Unadilla / I-88 / Oneonta KOA Journey works as a base for exploring Cooperstown and the upper Susquehanna Valley.

The Norwich camping season is short and tightly tied to the calendar. Bowman Lake State Park operates from mid-May through early October. Chenango County Cook Park campsites are open starting Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend. Private options such as Tall Pines Campground and River Adventures and the Unadilla / I-88 / Oneonta KOA Journey generally follow a similar window, with some KOA sites opening earlier in spring. Summer is peak. July and August weekends fill first, especially at state park sites with lakefront access. Spring shoulder weeks bring cool nights, higher water, and fewer crowds. Fall foliage in late September and early October is a strong draw, and reservations for those weekends should be locked in well in advance. Winter closes most developed campgrounds, but the parks stay active. At Bowman Lake, snowmobilers and cross-country skiers use 13 miles of designated trails, and no ice fishing is permitted. RV travellers planning a cold-weather visit should confirm road access and gate closures before arrival.

Expect wooded, rolling terrain and quiet sites rather than resort-style amenities. Bowman Lake State Park offers a secluded experience with sites spread through densely wooded forests, and features a sandy swimming beach with lifeguards during the season. Sites here have no electric, water, or sewer hookups, and cell service is spotty in the surrounding state forest, so download maps before leaving Norwich. Rig size matters at the smaller campgrounds. Cook Park uses a single-loop layout with water and electric hookups at most sites, and the compact design means sites sit close together among the pine trees. Some sloped sites and tight spacing between trees can challenge larger rigs. Larger Class A motorhomes are better suited to the KOA Journey or the more level loops at Bowman Lake. Firewood must generally come from within a 50-mile radius of the campground to limit pest spread.
