Campgrounds near Oxford, New York
Oxford sits in Chenango County along the Chenango River in New York's Southern Tier, roughly midway between Binghamton and Utica. The surrounding countryside is a mix of state forest, working farmland, and small river valleys, which gives RV travelers a choice between rustic state park camping and full-hookup private parks within a short drive of town.
Bowman Lake State Park is located west of Oxford in the town of McDonough, in Chenango County, and is the anchor public campground in the area. Chenango County Cook Park offers a county-run option closer to the village, while Tall Pines Campground and River Adventures, Belden Hill Campgrounds, and Kellystone Park Campsite round out the private RV options in the broader region.
Most sites in the area are reachable by paved county roads suitable for larger rigs, though the last approach to the state park winds through forested terrain. Grocery, fuel, and dump-station access are easiest in Oxford, Norwich, and along the I-88 corridor to the south.
Things to do around Oxford
The Chenango River draws paddlers and anglers through the warm months, and Tall Pines Campground and River Adventures runs tubing and kayak trips directly on the water. At Bowman Lake State Park, scenic park roads wind through evergreen and hardwood forests to 150 campsites and 8 cabins, there is a sandy lakefront for swimmers and sunbathers with several picnic areas nearby, the lake is regularly stocked with trout, birdwatchers can spot as many as 103 species of birds, and there are over 13 miles of scenic trails for hiking as well as marked snowmobile and cross-country trails for winter enjoyment.
Families traveling with kids often build a day around Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, close to Belden Hill Campgrounds. Chenango County Cook Park adds ballfields and picnic shelters for downtime between trips, and the small downtowns of Oxford and Norwich have diners, breweries, and farm stands within easy driving distance.

The camping season in this part of New York is tightly tied to the state park calendar. Bowman Lake State Park runs from mid-May through early October, with the busiest weeks running from late June through Labor Day when the beach is staffed and the lake is warmest. Private parks such as Belden Hill Campgrounds and Kellystone Park Campsite typically open earlier in spring and stay open a little later into fall, depending on weather.
Spring brings mud season and cool nights, but also good trout fishing at Bowman Lake and quieter sites midweek. Summer is peak family season, with warm days, scattered thunderstorms, and full campgrounds on holiday weekends. Early fall delivers reliable foliage color through the Chenango Valley, usually peaking in the first half of October.
Winter shuts down most drive-in camping. Bowman Lake State Park keeps marked snowmobile and cross-country trails open for winter use, but RV sites and running water are not available.
How to book a site near Oxford
Bowman Lake State Park is the only public campground in the immediate Oxford area, and it uses the statewide reservation system. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival, reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 9 months in advance.
Summer weekends, especially those tied to holidays, tend to fill first, so booking two to three months ahead is the safest approach for peak dates. Cabins and lakefront loops go earliest.
Private campgrounds including Tall Pines Campground and River Adventures, Belden Hill Campgrounds, and Kellystone Park Campsite take reservations directly through their own websites. Two-night minimums are common on weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in the Oxford area lean rustic rather than resort. Bowman Lake offers rustic cabins, an in-between option for campers who like tents and cabins, offering protection from the elements in 4 and 6 person layouts with no electricity or water, with the exception of Cabin 60, which has electricity. Expect central bathhouses, fire rings at each site, and limited to no cell coverage in the more remote loops.
Private parks in the area are better set up for larger RVs, with 50-amp service, full hookups, and pull-through sites available at properties like Belden Hill Campgrounds. Amenities such as pools, stocked ponds, and playgrounds are common at the private parks.
Bring cash or a card for firewood, plan for spotty cell service in the state forest, and note that a camping party and their equipment may occupy a site for a maximum of 14 continuous nights at Bowman Lake.

On RVezy, travel trailers typically run about $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from roughly $175 to $300 per night, and larger Class A coaches start around $250 and up. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oxford%2C%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Oxford, NY?
A standard New York State driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Oxford, even for a 32-foot Class C motorhome. New York does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rental on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters in Chenango County are surprised how straightforward the paperwork really is.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/driver-licensesIs my Oxford, NY RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Oxford, NY booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 12 with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout based on how much coverage and how low a deductible you want, and the plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan, covering things like tire changes, lockouts, jump starts, and towing. Plans change, and RVezy is built for that. Every booking is covered by the standard RVezy cancellation policy (not a host-defined one), which includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund amounts after the grace period depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so you are never left scrambling. Because RVezy manages cancellations directly, you will never have to negotiate with the owner. Pro tip: book early to secure peak summer dates at Bowman Lake State Park, knowing the cancellation terms are clear up front.

Bowman Lake State Park, just 8 miles west of Oxford, allows leashed pets in the campground (proof of rabies vaccination required), and so do Gilbert Lake State Park and Oquaga Creek State Park. The riverside trails along the Chenango River and the wooded loops at Bowman Lake make for fantastic morning walks. Bring a long leash, plenty of water, and a towel for muddy paws after lakeside swims.

Yes, RV delivery in Oxford is widely available and it is the easiest way to enjoy a stress-free trip, especially for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts in Chenango County will drive the RV to Bowman Lake State Park, Tall Pines Campground in Bainbridge, or even your driveway in Oxford or Norwich, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter listings by Delivery to see who offers it along with any per-mile fee. Pro tip: delivery is a smart move for travel trailers if you do not have a truck with the right hitch and brake controller setup.

parks.ny.gov/parks/bowman-lake/details.aspxWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Oxford, NY?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping Oxford NY, with the absolute peak being late June through August when daytime highs sit comfortably in the mid-70s to upper 70s F and overnight lows are a cool 55 to 60 F. September brings crisp mornings, fewer bugs, and the start of brilliant Catskill-foothills foliage that peaks around the first two weeks of October. Winter is genuinely cold here (January highs near 27 F and lows around 15 F), so most private campgrounds close by Columbus Day. For the lowest rates and prettiest light, target the second week of September.
weather.gov/bgm/I'm a first-time renter. Will I actually be able to drive and use the RV?
You've got this, and you won't be on your own. First time renting an RV in Oxford, NY is easier than you'd guess because every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, the generator, slide-outs, leveling jacks, and how to dump tanks. They share contact info so you can text questions mid-trip, and RVezy's 24/7 roadside assistance has your back for anything mechanical. Oxford's quiet country roads along Route 12 and Route 220 are ideal practice ground before heading anywhere bigger. Pro tip: ask your host to record a short video of the dashboard and hookup steps so you can replay it at your campsite.

You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking in Oxford includes 24/7 roadside assistance with your protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 12, a dead battery at Bowman Lake, or a slide-out that won't retract is one phone call away from help. The roadside team coordinates towing, mobile mechanics, and lockout service throughout Chenango County and beyond. Your host is also a direct text away for quick questions about quirks of their specific RV. Pro tip: before pulling out of the driveway, save the RVezy support number, the roadside number, and the closest 24-hour fuel station along State Route 12 in Oxford.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340174-Roadside-assistance-coverageCan I take my Oxford, NY RV rental into Canada or another state?
Cross-state travel is no problem, and many guests build a multi-state RV road trip from Oxford that loops through Pennsylvania, Vermont, or Massachusetts. From Oxford, you can reach the Pennsylvania border in under an hour and Vermont in about 4 hours. Travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection plan you select, so message the host before booking to confirm and to make sure your coverage extends across the border. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: popular cross-border loops from Oxford head north into the Adirondacks and east into Vermont's Green Mountains for stunning fall color.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat is fuel economy like, and how should I budget for gas?
Budgeting for fuel on a motorhome rental Oxford trip is easier than people expect on country roads. Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, Class A coaches get 6 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG combined). Regular unleaded in the Oxford and Norwich area generally tracks close to the New York state average, with stations on Route 12 and along I-88 being your most convenient fill-ups. For a 200-mile weekend in a Class C at $3.50 per gallon, expect around $70 to $90 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Oxford before heading into the state parks, where stations are sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Oxford, NY?
For New York State Parks like Bowman Lake, Oquaga Creek, and Gilbert Lake, the official ReserveAmerica window opens 9 months ahead, and prime July and August weekends in the Chenango County state parks routinely book out 4 to 6 months in advance. Private parks like Tall Pines in Bainbridge typically open reservations in January for the May-through-Columbus-Day season. Mid-week stays and shoulder-season trips (late May, September) are usually bookable just a week or two out. Pro tip: if your dream weekend at Bowman Lake is full, set a ReserveAmerica alert; cancellations pop up regularly within 14 days of a holiday weekend.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What are local driving conditions like around Oxford, NY?
Driving an RV around Oxford, NY is genuinely pleasant. Route 12, Route 220, and I-88 are well-maintained two-lane and divided highways with gentle Chenango Valley grades and very little traffic compared to downstate New York. Watch for occasional steep pulls and tight turns on county roads heading into Bowman Lake State Park, and stay alert for deer at dawn and dusk year-round. Winter brings real snow and ice from late November through March, so most renters stick to May through October. Pro tip: avoid narrow village streets in downtown Oxford with a Class A; use the wider Route 12 bypass and park near the village green to walk in.
511ny.org/What hookups and amenities do Oxford-area campgrounds offer?
You'll find a great mix. Bowman Lake State Park (the closest to Oxford) offers electric-only sites, hot showers, flush toilets, and an on-site dump station, plus potable water fill-ups. Many listings include a generator, outdoor awning, leveling blocks, a TV, and even Wi-Fi hotspots, which is handy in rural Chenango County where cell signal can dip in the hollows. nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?

Standard pickup is at the host's location in Oxford, Norwich, or a nearby Chenango County town between 1 and 4 PM, with drop-off by 11 AM. Need delivery to Bowman Lake or Tall Pines? Filter for Delivery and request a quote based on distance. parks.ny.gov/camping/rv-camping.aspxHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled by RVezy: you pay the trip total (nightly rate, fees, and your chosen protection plan) by credit card at booking, with no cash changing hands at pickup. Return the RV clean, on time, and with tanks handled per the host's checklist and the hold is released after the trip. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off to keep everything smooth.

Oxford sits in a sweet spot for a family RV trip Oxford NY through Central New York. Top loops include Cooperstown and the National Baseball Hall of Fame (about 70 miles north, 90 minutes), Ithaca and the Finger Lakes wine country with its waterfalls and gorges (85 miles west, roughly 1 hour 50 minutes), Watkins Glen State Park (110 miles, 2 hours 15 minutes), the Catskills around Phoenicia (145 miles, about 3 hours), and the Adirondack foothills near Old Forge (around 130 miles, 2 hours 45 minutes).
