Campgrounds near Peekskill, New York
Peekskill sits on the east bank of the Hudson River in northern Westchester County, roughly an hour north of New York City. The surrounding Lower Hudson Valley and Hudson Highlands hold several of the state's largest parks, giving RV travelers a mix of state-park campgrounds and privately run RV parks within a short drive.
Closest options include Beaver Pond Campground inside Harriman State Park, adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area in Rockland County, and Pelton Pond in Clarence Fahnestock State Park, which covers more than 14,000 acres of forest in Putnam and Dutchess counties. State-park sites are primitive with no electrical hookups and length limits of 30 feet at Beaver Pond and up to 40 feet at Pelton Pond.
For full-hookup RV stays, Sylvan Lake Beach Park, the New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday, and Black Bear Campground are the practical choices. Black Bear sits about 60 miles from midtown Manhattan in Orange County and operates year-round with 50-amp full-hookup sites, which is unusual in this region.
Things to do around Peekskill
Hiking is the main draw. Harriman State Park is a major trail hub in the Lower Hudson Valley, including a stretch of the Appalachian Trail, and Clarence Fahnestock offers over 50 miles of trails ranging from easy loops to steeper climbs. The short Pelton Pond loop starts right at the Fahnestock campground.
Water activities run through summer. Lake Welch at Harriman has a protected swimming beach with lifeguards on duty, and Canopus Lake at Fahnestock has a sandy swimming area, with rowboat and canoe rentals available on Canopus and Pelton Ponds. Fishing is productive across both parks for bass, pickerel, perch, and stocked trout, with a New York State license required for anglers 16 and older.
Off-trail options include Bear Mountain State Park, Hudson Highlands State Park, Cold Spring, Hudson Valley breweries, and historic sites along the river.

State-park campgrounds in this area are strictly seasonal. Beaver Pond typically operates from spring through late October under the New York State Parks reservation season. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock has historically operated from mid-May into early November, but the campground closed after Labor Day of the prior season and remains closed for the 2026 season for facility improvements. The Pelton Pond Pavilion remains available for rent through the reservation system.
Summer is peak season. Weekend sites at Harriman and Fahnestock fill quickly given the proximity to New York City, so early booking is essential. Spring and fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong foliage color in October.
Winter closes the state parks to camping, but private RV parks like Black Bear stay open. Fahnestock Winter Park grooms cross-country ski and snowshoe trails when snow conditions allow.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book
New York state park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond and Pelton Pond (when open), are reserved through the Reserve America system used by New York State Parks, either online or by phone. Sites can be booked up to nine months in advance. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond, and alcohol is prohibited on the grounds.
Private parks each use their own systems. New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday books through the KOA website and app. Black Bear Campground takes phone reservations and has been operating under new ownership with ongoing upgrades, so calling ahead to confirm site type and available amenities is recommended. Sylvan Lake Beach Park handles bookings directly through its operator.
For summer weekends and holiday periods, book as far ahead as possible. Cancellations are frequent, so checking closer to the date can also open sites.
What to expect on the ground
State-park sites are rustic. Beaver Pond has around 135 sites split between regular tent, platform tent, and a small number of trailer or RV sites, all without electrical hookups, with a length limit of 30 feet. Shared full-service bathrooms with showers, laundry, and a dump station are on site. Pets, alcohol, and additional vehicles beyond one per site are not permitted. Pelton Pond has roughly 75 to 80 sites, accepts RVs up to 40 feet, and allows pets on a six-foot leash with proof of rabies vaccination.
Black Bear Campground has around 160 RV-only sites with full hookups and 20/30/50-amp service, including pull-through options for big rigs, but no tent camping.
Black bears live in the Harriman and Bear Mountain area, so food should be stored properly. Deer ticks are present through the warm months, so insect repellent and tick checks are worthwhile.

Spring (April to early May) is quieter and cheaper, with blooming dogwoods along Route 9. Winter trips are possible at year-round spots like Croton Point, just confirm your rental has a furnace and heated tanks. weather.gov/okx/I have never driven an RV before. Is renting in Peekskill beginner-friendly?
Yes, first time renting an RV in Peekskill is genuinely doable, and most guests are surprised how smooth it goes. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures, so you will not drive off guessing. Class B campervans and small Class C motorhomes are the easiest to handle, especially if you are nervous about the Bear Mountain Bridge or narrow stretches of Route 9D. Prefer to skip the driving entirely? Choose a host who offers delivery and your RV will be waiting fully set up at your campsite. Pro tip: do a short first drive to Croton Point Park, only 15 minutes from downtown Peekskill, before tackling longer routes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my Peekskill RV trip?
You are covered. Your host is also a built-in resource, message them directly through the RVezy app for quick advice on quirks specific to their rig. For medical or safety emergencies, dial 911, the closest hospital is NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital in Cortlandt Manor, just a few miles from downtown Peekskill. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the RV VIN and license plate at pickup so it is handy if you ever need to call for service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Peekskill RV rental to Canada or out of state?
Yes, most Peekskill hosts allow interstate travel, which makes an RV road trip from Peekskill incredibly flexible. Popular routes include New England loops to Vermont's Green Mountains (about 200 miles), the Maine coast (around 350 miles), Niagara Falls (about 400 miles), and Acadia National Park (roughly 475 miles). Travel into Canada is sometimes allowed by individual hosts and depends on the protection plan, so message the host before booking to confirm and notify RVezy. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because coverage doesn't extend there. Bring a passport or enhanced ID for any Canadian border crossing. Pro tip: a one-week loop through Lake Placid, Burlington VT, and the White Mountains is a classic Northeast itinerary out of Peekskill.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/western-hemisphere-travel-initiativeWhat should I budget for fuel on a Peekskill RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than most people think. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. With New York gas prices generally hovering around $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon (diesel slightly higher), a 3-day, 250-mile loop in a Class C might cost roughly $80 to $110 in fuel. Top off at stations along Route 9 or the Bear Mountain Parkway before heading into the Catskills, where prices climb. Pro tip: download the GasBuddy app and fill up in Cortlandt or Yorktown Heights, where prices tend to be 10 to 20 cents lower than along the parkways.

Westchester County's Croton Point Park accepts reservations online and books up fast for July, August, and October foliage weekends. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Saturday night, book Sunday through Thursday and enjoy a quieter campground at lower rates while exploring Cold Spring or Beacon midweek.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Peekskill?
Driving an RV around Peekskill is very manageable once you know the local quirks. The Taconic State Parkway and Bronx River, Hutchinson River, Saw Mill, and Sprain Brook Parkways prohibit commercial vehicles and RVs over certain weights, so route yourself on Route 9, Route 9A, I-84, and I-87 (the New York State Thruway) instead. The Bear Mountain Bridge has a 14-foot clearance and gusty crosswinds, so take it slow. Local roads through Hudson Highlands can be winding with short on-ramps. Summer weekend traffic heading to the Catskills peaks Friday afternoon and Sunday evening, so plan departures around it. Pro tip: GPS apps don't always flag parkway restrictions, set your nav to truck/RV mode before pulling out.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/osss/truck/parkwaysWhat hookups and amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Peekskill?
You'll find a great mix. Croton Point Park offers 30 and 50-amp electric plus water at most RV sites with a dump station on-site. Fahnestock State Park Campground provides electric, water, and sewer hookups for select sites and has potable water fill stations. Beaver Pond at Harriman has electric only at some loops with a central dump station. Private parks like the Newburgh KOA offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, pools, and propane refills. Most NY state park campgrounds have flush toilets and hot showers in season (typically May to October). Pro tip: carry a 25-foot freshwater hose, a sewer hose with elbow, and a 30-to-50 amp adapter, that combo handles every campground within an hour of Peekskill.

Many hosts include kitchen kits, bedding, outdoor chairs, and even bikes as free or low-cost add-ons. Wi-Fi and TVs are common but vary by listing. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or around Peekskill, Cortlandt Manor, or Yorktown Heights, and many also offer delivery to local campgrounds like Croton Point or to your house. Pickup usually happens between 1 and 4 PM with a 30 to 60-minute walkthrough, and drop-off is by 11 AM. Pro tip: bundle generator hours and a bedding kit upfront, it's usually cheaper than buying them separately mid-trip.
tax.ny.gov/bus/st/sales_tax_rates.htmHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You will pay your booking total (rental fee, RVezy service fee, and any add-ons) by credit card directly through RVezy when you book, no cash or off-platform payments needed. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after a clean return with no damage or extra mileage. To avoid surprises, take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and drop-off, empty all tanks, refill propane and fuel if required, and stay within your mileage allowance. Pro tip: use a credit card with good travel protection so the deposit hold does not eat into your trip spending.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Peekskill?
Peekskill is one of the best launchpads for a Northeast RV adventure. Top routes include: Cold Spring and Beacon (10 to 15 miles north for a quick foodie weekend), Bear Mountain and Harriman State Parks (15 to 20 miles west), the Catskills around Phoenicia and Woodstock (about 75 miles northwest), Lake George and the southern Adirondacks (175 miles north), the Berkshires in Massachusetts (90 miles northeast), Niagara Falls (400 miles west), and Acadia National Park (475 miles northeast). A family RV trip Peekskill favorite is the 3-day Hudson Valley loop hitting Storm King Art Center, FDR's Hyde Park home, and Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie.
