Campgrounds near Shoreham, New York

Shoreham sits on the north shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, roughly midway between Riverhead and Port Jefferson. RV travelers using Shoreham as a base have access to a mix of New York State Parks on Long Island Sound, a National Park Service campground on Fire Island, and additional state park campgrounds across the Sound in Connecticut. The closest option is Wildwood State Park, located near Long Island Sound on the north shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, comprising 600 acres of undeveloped hardwood forest terminating on the high bluff overlooking Long Island Sound. To the south, Heckscher State Park is a 1,657-acre state park on the shore of the Great South Bay at East Islip in Suffolk County, and offers the nearest mainland launch point for the ferry to Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island. Across Long Island Sound in Connecticut, Hammonasset Beach State Park adds a large coastal campground reachable by ferry from Orient Point or by driving around through New York City. Totoket Valley RV Park rounds out the Connecticut options for RV travelers seeking full-hookup sites.

Things to do near Shoreham

Beach time drives most trips. Wildwood State Park offers a beach on Long Island Sound for swimming and fishing, along with hiking and biking trails, a playground, picnic areas, and a food concession. At Heckscher State Park, the Great South Bay is a great park resource, providing opportunities for bay swimming, boat launching, sail boarding, kayaking, and canoeing, and other popular activities in the park include picnicking, biking, sports fields, walking, jogging, scenic viewing, and nature observation. Fire Island is a day-trip highlight: Watch Hill sits on the western edge of the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, directly across the Great South Bay from Patchogue, and is accessible by ferry, private boat, or on foot. Hammonasset Beach State Park adds a long sandy beach, a boardwalk, and the Meigs Point Nature Center for family programming.

The camping season on Long Island runs late spring through early fall. Heckscher State Park campgrounds reopen from late May through early September, and Hammonasset Beach State Park typically opens in late May and closes in mid-October. Wildwood State Park is open year-round, while the campground is open from April to October, giving shoulder-season flexibility when other parks have already closed. Summer is the busiest window. The park is busiest over the summer, especially on weekends, and reservations for Hammonasset Beach State Park should be made as early as possible for peak summer weeks, as the campground books quickly. Fire Island has its own rhythm. Watch Hill Campground typically operates from mid-May through mid-October. Early fall brings warm water, thinner crowds, and easier weekend availability, though Atlantic tropical systems can occasionally disrupt Fire Island access.

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

How to book campgrounds near Shoreham

New York State Parks use one system. Reservations for Wildwood State Park can be made through the New York State Parks reservation system via ReserveAmerica, online or by phone at 1-800-456-CAMP, and open 9 months in advance, with early booking recommended as the campground fills quickly during summer weekends. The same nine-month window applies at Heckscher State Park, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival; this applies to campsites only. Connecticut uses a longer window: reservations can be made online or by phone up to 11 months in advance at Hammonasset Beach State Park. Totoket Valley RV Park is booked directly with the operator. Watch Hill is different. Watch Hill Campground does not use Recreation.gov for its family sites; rate and reservation information is handled through the concessioner. Backcountry permits for the Otis Pike Wilderness are booked separately through Recreation.gov.

What to expect at campgrounds near Shoreham

Sites lean open and grassy rather than wooded. At Heckscher, 69 tent and trailer sites share one large grassy area, with full hookup sites available for RVs up to 50 feet. Site boundaries are minimal. Numbers are painted on the roadway rather than marked by physical dividers. Hammonasset caps RVs at 35 feet. Pet rules are strict at the New York state parks: pets are NOT allowed in the park at Wildwood, and the same applies at Heckscher and inside the Hammonasset campground. Firewood must be sourced locally to prevent invasive species, and campers at Wildwood must bring a metal container for fires or rent one from the camp store. Expect a family-oriented atmosphere, lifeguarded swim areas in season, camp stores, and dump stations. Cell coverage is generally strong across Long Island but drops on Fire Island.
