Camping near South Lansing, New York
South Lansing sits on the eastern side of Cayuga Lake in Tompkins County, about ten miles north of Ithaca. The area serves as a practical base for exploring the Finger Lakes: waterfall parks, lakefront swimming, and the Cayuga wine trail are all within a short drive.
Campground options fall into three groups. Myers Park, a town-run park on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake, offers shaded lakefront camping and is the closest option to South Lansing. Robert H. Treman State Park lies just southwest of Ithaca, while Buttermilk Falls State Park has a small campground with 25 tent and RV sites accommodating vehicles or trailers up to 20 feet, plus 18 rental cabins.
Private campgrounds round out the mix. Spruce Row Campground sits above Cayuga Lake with tent sites, larger RV sites, and cabins, running a spring-through-fall season. Pinecreek Campground occupies wooded acreage south of Ithaca and offers tent through full-hookup RV sites, plus rentals.
Things to do near South Lansing
Cayuga Lake is the anchor. Myers Park has a lifeguarded swimming area, a playground, courts for volleyball and basketball, horseshoe pits, and a marina with paved launching ramps for boats, kayaks, or paddleboards.
Waterfall hiking is the other main draw. Trails at Robert H. Treman State Park follow the gorge past Enfield Glen and the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, with a stream-fed pool beneath a waterfall for swimming. Buttermilk Falls, a dramatic 165-foot cascade where Buttermilk Creek tumbles over a series of ledges into a natural swimming pool, anchors its namesake park, and the gorge trail climbs alongside the creek past 10 waterfalls.
Downtown Ithaca, Cornell University, and the Cayuga and Seneca wine trails are all within easy driving range for day trips.

The Finger Lakes camping window is tight. Robert H. Treman State Park typically runs from mid-May through early November, Buttermilk Falls State Park runs May 15 through October 11, and private campgrounds follow a similar pattern from spring through fall.
Summer is peak. July and August draw the largest crowds for swimming holes, gorge trails, and lake access, and holiday weekends fill first. Fall brings foliage and thinner crowds, though the swimming areas close by then.
Winter effectively closes the RV camping season around South Lansing. State park campgrounds shut down, private grounds close, and lake-effect snow off the Great Lakes is a factor. Shoulder seasons in May and October can be cold and wet, so campers should plan for freezing overnight lows into late spring and early fall.

How to book a site
New York State Parks use ReserveAmerica: reservations for campsites may be booked 9 months in advance for a 1-night minimum stay, and a maximum of 2 sleeping tents, or 1 camping unit and 1 small tent, is permitted per site. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival for campsites only, reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Cabins have longer minimums. Cabins require a 2-night minimum stay during non-peak season, a 3-night minimum on Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day weekends, and a 7 or 14-night minimum stay during peak season.
Myers Park and the private campgrounds book directly through their own websites, and Myers Park sites include 30-amp electric and water hookups with a dump station on site.
What to expect on the ground
State park sites are wooded and relatively rustic. Facilities at Buttermilk Falls include restrooms, hot showers, a dump station, playground, and picnic areas. At Robert H. Treman, sites feature picnic tables and fire rings, with electric hookups available at select sites, and the park provides restrooms with showers, a dump station, and potable water. Buttermilk Falls sites are mostly back-in, can accommodate vehicles or trailers only to a maximum of 20 feet, and have picnic tables and fire pits but no hookups.
Cabins are basic with no bedding, cookware, or heat, though some have electric outlets, so campers should come prepared. Pets are welcome at most campsites on a six-foot leash, with proof of rabies vaccination required at check-in.
Supplies are close: Ithaca has full-service grocery stores, fuel, and camping gear within a short drive of every campground on this list.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Lansing,%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in South Lansing, New York?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in South Lansing. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or campervans booked through RVezy. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most first-time renters in the Finger Lakes are surprised how straightforward the process is.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my South Lansing RV rental?
Plans change, and RVezy keeps cancellations low-stress. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every booking, not the host, and your refund depends on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. There are also special considerations for situations like natural disasters or severe Finger Lakes winter storms. You don't have to negotiate with the host or guess where you stand: the policy details and any refund amounts are shown clearly through the platform. Booking early helps you lock in the best Cayuga Lake rigs for summer with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in South Lansing, NY?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. When searching for a pet-friendly RV rental in South Lansing, just flip on the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and trailers that are happy to host your pup (sometimes with a small cleaning fee). Once you're rolling, dogs are welcome at most local campgrounds, including Myers Park on Cayuga Lake and Taughannock Falls State Park (leashed, max two pets, rabies certificate required at NY State Parks). The Finger Lakes Trail and Salt Point Natural Area near Lansing are fantastic for off-leash-friendly hikes too. Bring a tie-out, fresh water, and a towel because lake swims are non-negotiable.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/pets.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or address in South Lansing?
Yes, RV delivery in South Lansing is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free. Many hosts will drive the RV straight to your campsite at Myers Park, Taughannock Falls State Park, or a private property near South Lansing, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means zero highway driving for you, perfect for a first time renting an RV. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and how far they'll travel. Ask the host about combining delivery with a setup package for a truly turnkey trip.
parks.ny.gov/parks/62/details.aspxHow does mileage work on a Lansing RV rental and how far can I drive?
Most South Lansing hosts include a generous daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day), and quite a few offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer adventures. You'll see the exact policy on each listing before you book, so there are no surprises. From Lansing, you've got incredible range without burning through miles: Watkins Glen is about 35 miles, Niagara Falls roughly 160 miles, the Adirondacks around 180 miles, and New York City about 230 miles. Pro tip: if you're planning a bigger RV road trip from Lansing toward Acadia or the Catskills, filter for unlimited-mileage listings to save real money on overage fees.
dot.ny.gov/What are the best campgrounds near South Lansing, NY?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near South Lansing include Myers Park, a town-owned campground on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake just minutes away with swimming, a marina, and RV-friendly sites; Taughannock Falls State Park, about 15 miles southwest, home to a 215-foot waterfall with electric sites and lake access; Spruce Row Campground near Ithaca with full hookups and a pool; and Cayuga Lake State Park up in Seneca Falls. Myers Park books out fast for summer weekends, so reserve as soon as your dates are set.
parks.ny.gov/parks/62/details.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from South Lansing?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in South Lansing, with the absolute sweet spots being June (long days, lake swims, summer temps in the high 70s to low 80s F) and late September into early October when the Finger Lakes foliage explodes in color and daytime temps hover around 60 to 70 F. July and August are warmest and busiest, perfect for swimming Cayuga Lake. Winters here are real (15 to 33 F with lake-effect snow), so most local RV parks close from late October through April. Insider tip: book the last weekend of September for unbeatable foliage along Route 89 and uncrowded wineries.
weather.gov/bgm/I've never rented an RV before. Will I know what I'm doing?
You'll be in great hands. Every RVezy host in Lansing provides a hands-on orientation at pickup (or delivery), walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water and waste tanks, propane, awning, and dashboard before you drive an inch. First time renting an RV? Most hosts in the Finger Lakes are experienced campers themselves and love helping newcomers feel confident. You can also message the host from the listing page before booking with any questions, and RVezy support is just a call or chat away 24/7. Pro tip: choose a travel trailer that the host delivers and sets up at Myers Park, then your only job is to enjoy the lake.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat if something breaks down during my Lansing RV trip?
Take a deep breath, you're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire on Route 34, a dead battery at Taughannock Falls, or a tow off the Thruway is handled with one phone call. Your host is also typically just a text away for quick questions about quirks of their specific rig (like which switch runs the water pump). If anything bigger comes up, RVezy customer support is there before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before pickup so you've got it ready, even in spotty Finger Lakes cell zones.
nhtsa.gov/equipment/tiresCan I take my RV rental from Lansing across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and Canada is often possible too. From South Lansing you're perfectly positioned for a multi-state RV road trip: Pennsylvania, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New Jersey are all within a half-day drive. Popular RV road trips from Lansing include the New England fall foliage loop, the Adirondacks (180 miles), and Niagara Falls (160 miles), where some hosts allow crossings into Ontario, Canada, with advance approval and proof of cross-border insurance. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance doesn't extend there. Just message the host before booking to confirm Canadian travel, then enjoy the open road.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Lansing RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable, but it's predictable once you plan. Gas prices in Tompkins County typically run a bit above the national average (often $3.40 to $3.90 per gallon), and you can expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for Class C motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for campervans, and 12 to 18 MPG for the tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. For a typical 4-night RV camping Lansing weekend covering 250 miles, budget around $80 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Pilot in Cortland or the Dandy Mini Mart on Route 13 before heading north, both are RV-friendly with easy pull-through lanes.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lansing?
Earlier is better, especially for summer. New York State Parks (including Taughannock Falls and Cayuga Lake State Park) open reservations up to 9 months in advance through the ReserveAmerica system, and the lakefront and electric sites for July and August often book within days of opening. Myers Park in Lansing opens reservations through Campspot and fills holiday weekends fast. For September foliage trips, aim to book by mid-July. Pro tip: if you strike out at the State Park, Hejamada and Spruce Row are great private alternatives with more last-minute availability, and an RVezy host who delivers can often set you up at a private campground that's still open.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around South Lansing?
Driving here is genuinely pleasant compared to most of New York. South Lansing sits along quiet two-lane roads like Route 34B and Route 34, with rolling farmland and lake views rather than urban congestion. The biggest things to know: the descent into Ithaca on Route 79 and Route 96 includes steep grades (watch your brakes), gorge roads can be narrow and twisty, and lake-effect snow can roll in fast from late November through March. Deer are common at dawn and dusk, especially near Salt Point. Pro tip: stick to Route 34 along the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake for the most scenic, RV-friendly route between Lansing and Ithaca.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/Drivers-Manual.pdfWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near South Lansing?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Myers Park offers electric and water hookups, a dump station, hot showers, a swim beach, and a marina right on Cayuga Lake. Taughannock Falls State Park has electric sites, modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station, plus the legendary 215-foot waterfall trail. Most Tompkins County campgrounds offer potable water fill stations and on-site dump stations, so you don't need to plan around them. Pack a water pressure regulator because some older Finger Lakes hookups run high pressure.
parks.ny.gov/parks/62/details.aspxWhat's inside a typical RV rental from a Lansing host?
More comfort than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental in Lansing comes equipped with a queen or king bed, a convertible dinette or bunk beds (sleeps 4 to 8), a full kitchen with a fridge/freezer, microwave, propane stove, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, a furnace for those cool Finger Lakes nights, and seatbelts for every passenger. Many rigs include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and a power awning. Some hosts add a Wi-Fi hotspot or generator for off-grid stays at Salt Point or Connecticut Hill. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenity icons carefully, then message the host to confirm anything that matters for your group.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat add-ons can I get with my Lansing RV rental?
Tons, and they make life easier. Common add-ons from Lansing-area hosts include camping chairs and outdoor mats, linen and towel packages, kitchen kits with cookware, bikes and kayaks (perfect for Cayuga Lake), portable grills, generators, and even pre-stocked propane. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup, dump-and-fill services so you skip the dump station, and pet packages. Pickup and dropoff is usually at the host's home in South Lansing or Ithaca, with a 30-minute orientation included. Pro tip: bundling delivery plus a kayak rental is the secret sauce for a cheap RV rental Lansing weekend that feels like a luxury trip without lifting a finger.
tompkinscountyny.gov/How does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay for your South Lansing RV rental through RVezy with a credit or debit card at booking, with no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment and released back to you after the trip ends, assuming no damage and the RV is returned in similar condition. Take a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff, return the rig with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and confirm cleaning expectations with the host so the deposit comes back fast and in full.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs winter RV rental available in Lansing, NY?
Yes, winter rentals exist and they're an adventure. While most Finger Lakes campgrounds close from late October through April, a handful of Lansing hosts keep four-season rigs available for ice fishing on Cayuga Lake, snowshoeing at Salt Point, or cozy cabin-style stays in a heated motorhome with shore power at a winterized RV park. Look for listings that mention heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and a working furnace, and plan to stay at a park with year-round 30-amp hookups (a few private parks south of Lansing stay open). Pro tip: a delivered, set-up trailer with full power is the smartest way to do a Finger Lakes winter trip without freezing a single pipe.
