Campgrounds and RV parks near South Nyack, NY

Harriman State Park is the main draw for active families, with hiking, swimming, and paddling on its many lakes. Lake Tiorati Beach and Lake Welch Beach are swimming facilities in Harriman State Park, with Lake Welch adjacent to Beaver Pond Campground. At Clarence Fahnestock State Park, Canopus Lake, with its sandy shore and nearby picnic area, is the jewel of the park. Fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and in the park's four ponds is excellent in all seasons for anglers seeking bass, pickerel, perch, or brook and rainbow trout. Rowboats and kayaks are available for rental. A section of the Appalachian Trail crosses the park. From Liberty Harbor RV Park, the NW Waterway Ferry runs to Pier 11 at the foot of Wall Street. The PATH Train and Light Rail are also only a few minutes walk away, putting lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island within a short ride. Floyd Bennett Field adds birding at the adjacent Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, biking on old runways, and ranger-led kayaking in summer.

The state-park campgrounds in this region are seasonal. Beaver Pond typically operates from spring through fall, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and weekends fill early because of the park's proximity to New York City. Importantly, the Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse, so travelers should verify Pelton Pond availability before planning. Spring and fall are quieter, but shoulder-season weather can swing quickly, and blackflies and mosquitoes emerge in late spring. Summer brings warm, humid days with afternoon thunderstorms and heavy weekend bookings. Bear activity is present in the Harriman area during camping season, and bear-safe food storage guidelines must be followed to avoid unsafe encounters. Winter shuts most sites in the Hudson Valley, though Fahnestock Winter Park includes 20 kilometers of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Liberty Harbor RV Park, by contrast, is open year round for your convenience, and Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is typically open from mid-May through mid-October.

Site type varies widely across these campgrounds. Beaver Pond offers campsites, some with a raised platform, for up to two tents and six persons per site; select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long. There are no electrical hookups for trailers at this campground. Alcohol is not permitted at Beaver Pond Campgrounds. Pets are also not permitted. At Clarence Fahnestock, there are no hookups available or dump station, restroom and shower facilities are centrally located to all RV and tent sites. Liberty Harbor RV Park offers 70 sites (water and electric), dump station, full restrooms with hot showers, laundry room, complimentary Wi-Fi, 24-hour security, with views of the Manhattan skyline and Statue of Liberty from the site. The Floyd Bennett Field Campground has 17 RV sites, but there is no water or electric hookups. Expect city noise there, and mosquitoes from mid-summer into fall.
