Campgrounds near Sparkill, New York
Sparkill sits in Rockland County just west of the Hudson River, within an easy drive of both Manhattan and the highlands of the lower Hudson Valley. RV renters basing here have two very different styles of camping within reach: forested state-park campgrounds in the hills to the north and west, and urban RV parks positioned for sightseeing in New York City.
Beaver Pond Campground sits inside Harriman State Park, a roughly 46,000-acre park in the Palisades Region, with dozens of lakes and hundreds of miles of trails. Pelton Pond in Clarence Fahnestock State Park lies farther north in the Hudson Highlands. Camp Wyanokie is tucked into the Wyanokie Highlands in northern New Jersey.
On the urban side, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is a full-hookup park near Manhattan, and Floyd Bennett Field, part of Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn, offers rare in-city NPS camping. Together they cover the range from primitive tent-and-trailer sites to serviced RV pads with ferry and subway access.
Things to do near Sparkill
Harriman State Park anchors the outdoor options. The park has an extensive network of hiking trails including portions of the Appalachian Trail, plus lakes for swimming, fishing, and paddling. Lake Welch has a swimming beach adjacent to Beaver Pond Campground, and campers can purchase permits to boat on the lake.
Closer to the city, Liberty Harbor puts renters within reach of PATH trains and ferries to Lower Manhattan. Floyd Bennett Field, once New York City's first municipal airport and later a WWII naval air station, now includes over 1,300 acres of grassland, saltmarshes, tidal mudflats, a marina, and the former airfield with a control tower and terminal that serves as the William Fitts Ryan Visitor Center. Birding along Jamaica Bay, cycling the former runways, and day trips to Fahnestock's ponds round out the options.

State-park campgrounds in the region run a warm-weather season. Beaver Pond typically opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only for about two weeks, and the regular reservation season runs from early May through mid-October. Pelton Pond in Fahnestock and Camp Wyanokie follow similar spring-to-fall patterns and close for winter. Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field operates seasonally from April through October.
Summer is peak. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers at roughly an hour's drive from the city, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Bugs are a real factor: gnats and mosquitoes appear by early summer, and mosquitoes are a significant nuisance at coastal sites like Floyd Bennett Field through the warm months.
Fall brings cooler nights, foliage in the Hudson Highlands, and easier reservations after Labor Day. Winter camping is limited to year-round urban options; Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year-round.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. How to book
New York state-park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond and Pelton Pond, use the Reserve America system operated by New York State Parks. Reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance. From March 15 through Labor Day, sites at the 9-month window release at 8 AM on weekdays and 9 AM on weekends. Same-day reservations are permitted only until 3 PM on the day of arrival, and walk-ins are subject to availability after that.
Floyd Bennett Field is booked through Recreation.gov. Liberty Harbor RV Park takes direct reservations by phone or through its website and is a good fallback when state-park sites are full.
RV renters should filter by rig length: Beaver Pond sites accommodate trailers or RVs up to 30 feet with no electrical hookups, while Liberty Harbor supports larger rigs with full hookups.
What to expect
Expect a clear split between rustic and urban. At Beaver Pond, each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill, shared full-service bathrooms with showers and laundry, and a dump station for RVs, but there are no electrical hookups. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond, alcohol is prohibited, and only one vehicle is allowed per campsite. Black bears inhabit the Harriman and Bear Mountain area, so food should be stored properly.
Liberty Harbor is a paved urban lot with skyline views and full hookups, pull-through sites, dump station, showers, and laundry. Green space is minimal.
Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is primitive: tent and RV sites without hookups, a dump station, seasonal showers, flush toilets, and picnic tables. Bring bug spray, drinking water, and a plan for waste.
