Campgrounds near Tappan, New York
Tappan sits in Rockland County just north of the New Jersey line, roughly a half-hour drive from Manhattan and within reach of some of the Hudson Valley's largest protected parklands. RV travelers basing near Tappan can choose between urban RV parks with hookups and full services, or drive-in state park campgrounds with rustic sites in wooded settings.
The closest true state park campground is Beaver Pond Campground inside Harriman State Park, adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area. For hookup camping within transit distance of New York City, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is the nearest full-service RV option. Camp Wyanokie sits in the New Jersey Highlands to the west, and Floyd Bennett Field in the Gateway National Recreation Area covers the Brooklyn side of the metro area.
For a longer trip north into the Hudson Highlands, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park offers a forested campground with lake access about an hour up the Taconic State Parkway, though campers should confirm current-season status before booking.
Things to do near Tappan
Harriman State Park anchors the outdoor options within a short drive. It covers roughly 46,000 acres with an extensive trail network, dozens of lakes, and swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati. Sections of the Appalachian Trail cross the park, and Bear Mountain State Park borders it to the northeast.
Campers staying at Beaver Pond Campground can reach Lake Welch beach on foot when lifeguards are on duty, and registered campers can purchase a camper boat permit for use on Lake Welch. Clarence Fahnestock State Park adds Canopus Lake swimming, rowboat and kayak rentals, and trout fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes.
From Liberty Harbor RV Park or Floyd Bennett Field, day trips into Manhattan by ferry, PATH train, or subway make museums, Central Park, and the Statue of Liberty accessible without driving into the city.

The main state park camping season in the region runs from spring through mid-fall. Beaver Pond Campground typically opens in mid-April for walk-in camping and takes reservations from early May through mid-October. The Pelton Pond campground at Clarence Fahnestock has historically operated from mid-May into early November, but the campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse, so travelers should confirm reopening plans with the park before booking.
Summer weekends fill quickly at parks within an hour of New York City, and holiday weekends often book out as soon as sites become available. Fall foliage in late September and October is a strong draw across Harriman and the Hudson Highlands.
Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year-round, making it the practical choice outside the state park season. Winter camping in the surrounding state parks is limited, though Fahnestock Winter Park offers groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails when snow cover allows.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book a campsite near Tappan
New York State Parks, including Beaver Pond and the Pelton Pond campground at Fahnestock, use the ReserveAmerica system. Sites can be booked up to nine months in advance, and reservations for weekends near New York City should be made as early as possible. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival, and this applies to campsites only.
Floyd Bennett Field at Gateway National Recreation Area uses Recreation.gov, with reservations accepted up to six months in advance. Advance reservations are required at least a day in advance.
Liberty Harbor RV Park takes reservations directly by phone or through its website. Because it is one of the few RV-accessible options in the immediate New York City area, booking well ahead is recommended during peak tourist seasons.
What to expect at campgrounds near Tappan
Expect a wide range in site style. Beaver Pond offers campsites, some with a raised platform, for up to two tents and six persons per site, and select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet long. Central bathhouses provide showers and laundry, and a dump station is available, but there are no electrical hookups for trailers at this campground. Alcohol is not permitted, and pets are not permitted, which is worth noting for RV travelers with dogs.
The Pelton Pond campground at Fahnestock accepts rigs up to 40 feet, but there are no hookups or dump station at this park, and site privacy varies considerably. Floyd Bennett Field is a flat, open coastal site with tent and RV parking, basic restrooms, and a small camp store.
Liberty Harbor is essentially a paved lot with 30 and 50 amp electric, water, a dump station, restrooms, showers, and laundry, better suited to travelers using it as a base for city visits than for a nature experience.

newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Tappan and the lower Hudson Valley?
You will find a mix of easy highway cruising and a few spots to plan around. From Tappan, the Palisades Interstate Parkway, I-87, and I-287 are RV-friendly with good shoulders. The key rule to remember: most New York metro parkways (Saw Mill, Hutchinson, Sprain Brook, and Taconic) prohibit commercial vehicles and have low-clearance bridges, so route your motorhome rental in Tappan via interstates and US highways. The Palisades Interstate Parkway prohibits commercial vehicles but allows non-commercial RVs, always confirm height clearances. Traffic is heaviest Friday afternoons heading north and Sunday evenings heading south. Pro tip: use Google Maps' truck/RV routing or the RV Trip Wizard app to avoid surprise low bridges, and aim to cross the Mario Cuomo Bridge before 3 p.m. on summer Fridays.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tappan,%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons can I get and how do pickup and drop-off work in Tappan?

Pickup is usually at the host's home in Tappan, Pearl River, Nyack, or just over the border in Bergen County, NJ, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Drop-off is at the same location at the agreed time, with fees if you return late or with a dirty tank. Pro tip: book the dump-and-refill add-on if offered, skipping a 45-minute stop at a dump station on your way home is worth every penny.

The deposit is held, not charged, and released after trip completion as long as the RV is returned in the same condition. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick walk-around video at both pickup and drop-off, it is the single best way to ensure your security deposit comes back fast and in full.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Tappan in winter, and how do cold-weather rigs work?
Yes, a winter RV rental in Tappan, NY is an option and it can be magical. Many Hudson Valley hosts keep their rigs available year-round, especially four-season motorhomes built with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and stronger propane furnaces. Confirm with the host that the RV is winterized for use (not storage) and that the campground you are heading to stays open, options include private parks like Black Bear Campground and select sites in Harriman State Park that operate year-round. Pro tip: ask the host about a heated water hose and extra propane tank, plan to use shore power for the furnace, and dump tanks before temperatures drop below 20 F to avoid freezing. Winter rates are often 30 to 40% below peak fall-foliage pricing.
