Campgrounds near Upper Nyack
Upper Nyack sits on the west bank of the Hudson River in Rockland County, roughly 20 miles north of Manhattan. RV travelers in the area have access to a mix of state park campgrounds in the Hudson Highlands, a private waterfront RV park across the river, and rustic sites in nearby New Jersey forests.
The closest developed campground is Beaver Pond Campground, which adjoins the Lake Welch Recreation Area within Harriman State Park, about 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge. Farther north, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park sits on more than 14,000 acres of Putnam and Dutchess county terrain in the Hudson Highlands. To the south, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City serves as an RV basecamp for visiting New York City, with 30-amp and 50-amp electric plus water hookups, restrooms, showers, laundry, and easy transit into Manhattan.
For more rustic camping, Camp Wyanokie sits in Norvin Green State Forest across the river in New Jersey, and Black Bear Campground near Florida, NY offers a full-hookup RV option in Orange County.
Things to do near Upper Nyack
Harriman State Park is the main outdoor draw. The park has over 200 miles of trails maintained by the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, 31 lakes, and multiple swimming beaches, with activities including hiking, swimming, fishing, paddling, and boating. Campers at Beaver Pond have walking-distance access to Lake Welch Beach when lifeguards are on duty.
At Fahnestock, Canopus Lake has a sandy shore and picnic area, and fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and the park's four ponds targets bass, pickerel, perch, and brook and rainbow trout. A portion of the Appalachian Trail runs through the park.
From Liberty Harbor, the NY Waterway Ferry runs weekdays to Pier 11 at Wall Street, and the Grove Street PATH station is a short walk away. Camp Wyanokie connects to trail networks in Norvin Green State Forest.

The Hudson Valley camping season runs roughly mid-April through mid-October at state park sites. Beaver Pond typically opens for the reservation season in spring and runs through mid-October, with a dumping station, showers, and comfort stations on site. Important for planners: the main campground at Clarence Fahnestock is closed to facilitate construction of a new bathhouse, so Pelton Pond sites are not currently bookable; check the ReserveAmerica page for the reopening schedule before planning a trip there.
Summer weekends fill fastest. Harriman is a popular weekend escape from New York City, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Fall brings foliage and cooler nights, and shoulder-season midweek stays are noticeably quieter.
Winter access is limited at tent-oriented state parks, but private options stay open. Liberty Harbor RV Park operates 365 days a year and accepts check-ins 24/7, even when the office is closed.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book
New York State Park campgrounds use the ReserveAmerica system. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites released at the 9-month window at 8AM Monday through Friday and 9AM Saturday and Sunday from March 15 to Labor Day, and at 9AM daily the rest of the year. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival at New York State Park campgrounds, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Beaver Pond has specific site limits worth checking before booking an RV: campsites accommodate up to two tents and six people per site, and select sites can take a trailer or RV up to 30 feet long, with no electrical hookups for trailers.
Private parks book directly through their own websites. Liberty Harbor RV Park and Black Bear Campground both accept online reservations, and Camp Wyanokie requires a paid reservation for pavilion or campsite use.
What to expect
Expect a mix of primitive state-park camping and urban-adjacent RV parking, not destination resorts. Beaver Pond is primitive with no electrical hookups, and select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet long. Fahnestock's campground has no hookups or dump station, but restroom and shower facilities are centrally located to all RV and tent sites.
Bears are active in the area. Bear habitat guidelines apply during stays at Beaver Pond and must be followed at all times. Pets and alcohol are not permitted at Beaver Pond, and quiet hours are enforced.
Liberty Harbor is essentially a parking lot at a marina with skyline views, not a wooded campground. It offers electric and water connections, a dump station, and clean restrooms and showers, with 24-hour security and views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline from many sites.
