Campgrounds and RV parks near Vails Gate, NY

Local sightseeing centers on Revolutionary War history. The New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site sits about a mile north of Vails Gate along Route 300, and Washington's Headquarters in Newburgh is a short drive away. West Point and the Hudson River waterfront are also close. Outdoor plans usually pull travelers into the surrounding state parks. Canopus Lake, with its sandy shore and nearby picnic area, is the jewel of Fahnestock, and fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and in the park's four ponds is excellent for anglers seeking bass, pickerel, perch, or brook and rainbow trout. Rowboats and kayaks are available for rental. Harriman State Park is a 48,556-acre state park located in Rockland and Orange counties, featuring 31 lakes, multiple streams, public camping, and over 200 miles of trails maintained by volunteers from the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference. Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River or Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc will find on-site pools, beach access, and organized activities without leaving the campground.

The Vails Gate camping season tracks the Lower Hudson Valley pattern. State-park campgrounds open in mid to late spring and close in mid-fall. Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park generally runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock typically operates mid-May through early November, though the Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse, so travelers should confirm status before booking. Summer weekends fill first. Weekend reservations fill quickly during peak season, particularly summer months, and Harriman in particular is a favored weekend getaway from New York City. Bugs, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms are typical from June through August. Spring and fall bring cooler nights and thinner crowds. Fall foliage in the Hudson Highlands peaks in October, one of the busier stretches for day-use traffic even as overnight demand eases. Winter closes the state-park campgrounds, though the KOA operates on a longer season and Fahnestock Winter Park includes 15 kilometers of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as an area for sledding.

Hookup expectations vary sharply by property. The New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday is the closest full-service park with standard RV amenities. State-park camping is more rustic: Beaver Pond offers campsites, some with a raised platform, for up to two tents and six persons per site, and select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill, and there are shared full-service bathrooms centrally located. Comfort stations, showers, laundry facilities, and a dumping station are part of the campground. There are no electrical hookups for trailers at this campground. Pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground, and only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock accommodates RVs up to 40 feet in length with picnic tables, fire rings, water, toilets, and showers, and is a good fit for tent campers and smaller trailers, though it is closed for the 2026 season. Black bears do inhabit the Harriman and Bear Mountain area, so hang food or carry a bear canister, and pack insect repellent for deer ticks that carry Lyme disease.
