Campgrounds near Valley Cottage, NY
Valley Cottage sits in Rockland County on the west side of the Hudson River, about 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge. The location puts RV travelers within easy reach of Harriman State Park, the Hudson Highlands, and lower Manhattan, making it a practical base for families who want both forested camping and a day trip into New York City.
The closest public campground is Beaver Pond Campground inside Harriman State Park, which offers campsites, some with a raised platform, for up to two tents and six persons per site, with select sites accommodating a trailer or RV up to 30 ft long. There are no electrical hookups for trailers at this campground. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park sits farther north in Putnam County and offers a similar rustic experience along wooded ridges.
For larger rigs and full hookups, Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY and Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City are the main options within about an hour's drive. Camp Wyanokie, across the New Jersey line at Norvin Green State Forest, is tent-only and useful mainly for very small rentals or hike-in style stays.
Things to do near Valley Cottage
Harriman State Park is the primary draw. A haven for hikers with more than 200 miles of trails that range from easy to strenuous, Harriman State Park also boasts 31 lakes, two beaches, and near-endless vistas, plus lake activities such as swimming, fishing, paddling, boating, ice fishing, and ice skating. Lake Welch, next to Beaver Pond Campground, has a supervised swimming beach when lifeguards are on duty.
Farther north, Clarence Fahnestock State Park adds a beach on Canopus Lake, boat rentals, and a section of the Appalachian Trail that passes through the park. The park is also home to the Taconic Outdoor Education Center and Fahnestock Winter Park, which includes 20 kilometers of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. A sledding area and warming lodge round out the winter offerings.
From Liberty Harbor RV Park, ferries and the PATH train reach lower Manhattan in about 15 minutes, opening up Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, and midtown attractions.

The core camping season in this part of the Lower Hudson Valley runs from mid-spring through late fall. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock traditionally operates from mid-May through mid-October, and Beaver Pond runs a similar warm-weather schedule. The Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse, so travelers planning to use Pelton Pond should verify current status before booking.
Summer weekends fill fastest. At just an hour's drive from New York City, Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, which means weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Midweek trips are noticeably quieter and easier to book on short notice.
Fall brings foliage and cooler nights, ideal for hiking. Winter shuts down the state park campgrounds, but Black Bear Campground and Liberty Harbor RV Park stay open year-round, and Fahnestock Winter Park draws cross-country skiers and snowshoers into the surrounding forest.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. How to book campgrounds near Valley Cottage
New York State Park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond and Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock, are reserved through the state's ReserveAmerica system. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites only, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Black Bear Campground and Camp Wyanokie use private booking systems: Black Bear through its own website or partner platforms, and Camp Wyanokie through its operator's online reservation portal. Both have limits on stay length and require booking before arrival, so check the operator's policies when planning a trip.
Liberty Harbor RV Park takes direct bookings and stays open year-round, but its limited site count fills quickly around holidays and major NYC events, so reserve well ahead.
What to expect
Sites in the state park campgrounds are wooded and rustic. At Fahnestock, there are no hookups or dump station, though restroom and shower facilities are centrally located to all RV and tent sites. Beaver Pond has comfort stations, showers, laundry facilities, and a dumping station but no electric hookups, and it caps trailers and motorhomes at 30 feet. Pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch. Bear activity is present in the area, and bear habitat guidelines must be followed at all times.
Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY is RV-focused with full hookups and 20/30/50-amp service, plus a pool, laundry, and cable.
Liberty Harbor RV Park is an urban lot with skyline views. It operates as a fenced section within a marina parking area, providing basic hookups in an open gravel lot setting. Sites feature electrical and water hookups with spaces positioned close together on level gravel surfaces. Expect city noise and minimal greenery in exchange for direct transit access to Manhattan.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Valley%20Cottage%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Valley Cottage, NY?
Great news for first-timers: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Valley Cottage. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal motorhomes or trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the platform when you book, so there is no extra DMV trip. Visiting from overseas? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued before you travel. Most guests are surprised at how smooth the pickup process really is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV insurance and roadside help included with my Valley Cottage RV rental?
Yes, and that is one of the best parts of booking an RV rental in Valley Cottage with RVezy. Every booking includes an RVezy renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered for towing, flat tires, lockouts, and battery jumps wherever the Hudson Valley takes you. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV based on the coverage level you select at checkout (you choose the plan, not the host), and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Drive over the Mario Cuomo Bridge with confidence knowing help is a single call away.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Valley Cottage RV rental?
You can book with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (it is not chosen by individual hosts), so the rules are consistent whether you are renting a campervan in Nyack or a fifth wheel in West Nyack. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, and refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook with travel credits. Review the full policy on the RVezy Help Center, or message support before booking if you have questions, then lock in your Valley Cottage RV trip dates.

Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee (usually $25 to $75 per stay) and bring a portable water bowl, summer humidity on the Hudson can be intense.

fhwa.dot.gov/policyinformation/travel_monitoring/tvt.cfmWhere can I camp near Valley Cottage with my RV?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Valley Cottage. Top picks within an hour include Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park (about 25 miles west, with 200+ sites and electric hookups at some loops), Sebago Cabin Camp also in Harriman for a rustic vibe, Croton Point Park across the Hudson in Westchester (full hookups and river views, about 18 miles), Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY (full-service, 35 miles), and the New York City North/Newburgh KOA (50 miles up I-87). Pro tip: state park sites release on ReserveAmerica exactly 9 months ahead, so set a calendar reminder for prime summer weekends.
parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time to visit Valley Cottage in an RV?
Honestly, late April through late October is RV gold in Valley Cottage, with two standout windows. Spring (mid-April to June) brings 60 to 75 degree days, blooming dogwoods along the Palisades, and fewer crowds. Fall (late September through the third week of October) is the headline act, Hudson Valley foliage peaks around October 10 to 20, and an RV gets you front-row seats on the Bear Mountain Bridge loop. Summer is warm and humid (80s with thunderstorms) but perfect for swimming at Lake Welch. Winter rentals exist for cozy heated-trailer getaways, but most campgrounds close by November 1. Book October weekends 3+ months out, leaf-peepers come in waves.
weather.gov/okx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You've got this, and Valley Cottage is actually a forgiving place for first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and the bathroom, plus most leave a printed cheat sheet inside. Start with a shorter travel trailer or Class C (22 to 28 feet) for easier handling on the Palisades Interstate Parkway. Important local note: the Palisades Parkway itself bans commercial vehicles and trailers, so route your rig via Route 9W or I-87 instead. Take 30 minutes in an empty lot (the Palisades Center mall lot on Sunday mornings is huge) to practice turns and backing. You'll feel confident fast.
dot.ny.gov/driver/commercial-vehiclesWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road during my Valley Cottage RV trip?
Take a deep breath, you are covered. Every motorhome rental in Valley Cottage booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so one phone call gets you a tow, jumpstart, tire change, lockout service, or fuel delivery anywhere in the US or Canada. Your host is also a message away through the RVezy app for quick questions like how to reset the inverter, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after the trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup and save the roadside number in your phone, that 30 seconds of prep turns any hiccup into a non-event.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Valley Cottage RV rental on a road trip across state lines or into Canada?
Absolutely, an RV road trip from Valley Cottage is wide open. You can freely cross into New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont with any RVezy rental. For Canadian trips (Montreal is about 320 miles, Quebec City about 480 miles), message the host before booking since cross-border travel requires advance notice and host approval. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage ends at the border. Popular loops from here include the Vermont Green Mountains, the Maine coast, and the Pennsylvania Wilds. Pro tip: bring your passport for Canada and always carry the RVezy rental agreement when crossing borders.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Easy to budget for. Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 mpg, Class A's run 7 to 10 mpg, and a truck pulling a travel trailer usually does 10 to 13 mpg. Gas in Rockland County typically runs slightly above the national average (check GasBuddy before you fill up, the Stewart's on Route 303 in Valley Cottage and the Costco in Nanuet are usually the cheapest local fills). For a 4-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $140 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in New Jersey if your route swings south, prices are often 20 to 40 cents lower per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Valley Cottage?
For the best campgrounds near Valley Cottage, the earlier the better, especially in summer and fall. New York state parks like Beaver Pond and Sebago in Harriman release reservations on ReserveAmerica.com exactly 9 months ahead, and prime July, August, and October weekends often sell out within hours. Private parks like the Newburgh KOA and Black Bear Campground open bookings 12 months out and have more flexibility. For weekday or shoulder-season trips, you can often snag a spot 1 to 2 weeks ahead. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for 7:00 a.m. exactly 9 months before your target date, that's when the state system refreshes and the best riverside loops disappear fast.
parks.ny.gov/camping/reservations.aspxWhat are the local roads like for driving an RV around Valley Cottage?
Generally very RV-friendly, with a few smart detours to know. I-87 (the New York State Thruway), Route 9W, and Route 303 are your main RV-approved arteries with wide lanes and good clearances. The big rule: the Palisades Interstate Parkway and most NYC parkways (Hutchinson, Saw Mill, Taconic south of I-84) ban commercial vehicles, trailers, and many motorhomes, so always route via interstates instead. The Mario Cuomo Bridge (formerly Tappan Zee) on I-287 is RV-friendly with no height issues. Local hills around Hook Mountain are gentle. Pro tip: use the RV Trip Wizard app or set your GPS to 'truck mode' with your rig's height (usually 10 to 12 feet) to avoid any low-clearance surprises.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/restriction.pdfWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Valley Cottage?
Most campgrounds within an hour of Valley Cottage are well-equipped for RVs. Private parks like New York City North/Newburgh KOA and Black Bear Campground offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), free Wi-Fi, laundry, hot showers, pools, and on-site dump stations. New York state parks like Beaver Pond have electric and water at many sites but no individual sewer, you'll use the central dump station on departure. Potable water fill-up spigots are clearly marked at every park entrance. Pro tip: carry a 25-foot drinking water hose, a sewer hose, and a surge protector, your host usually provides these, but confirm at pickup so you're never caught short at the fill station.
parks.ny.gov/parks/harriman/details.aspxWhat's inside the RVs available for rent in Valley Cottage?
More than you'd expect. A typical campervan rental Valley Cottage or motorhome on RVezy comes fully equipped: real beds (queen or king in larger rigs, convertible dinettes for kids), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with hot shower, propane heat, roof A/C, and seatbelted seating for everyone listed on the booking. Most include a TV, many have onboard generators, and a growing number offer mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, perfect for working remotely from Bear Mountain. Smaller travel trailers may skip the generator. Pro tip: filter by 'sleeps' count and check the listing's amenity icons, then message the host to confirm specifics like outdoor speakers or a backup camera.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons can I get with my Valley Cottage rental, and how does pickup work?
Tons of useful extras. Most RVezy hosts in Valley Cottage offer add-ons like kitchen kits ($25 to $50), linens and towels ($15 to $30 per person), bikes, kayaks, camp chairs, generators, portable grills, and propane refills. Delivery and setup is often available, otherwise you'll pick up at the host's location (typically a driveway in Valley Cottage, Nyack, Congers, or West Nyack), do a 30 to 45 minute walkthrough, and hit the road. Mileage policies vary by host (100 to 150 free miles per night is common, with some offering unlimited). Pro tip: confirm pickup time, return time, and a generator-hours allowance up front, those three details prevent 90 percent of end-of-trip surprises.
consumer.ftc.gov/articles/buying-or-leasing-carHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Valley Cottage, NY?
Simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card (never in cash to the host), which keeps every transaction documented and protected. Your booking total covers the nightly rate, RVezy service fee, your chosen protection plan, taxes, and any add-ons. The security deposit is separate from the booking payment and is pre-authorized (not charged) on your card before your trip, then released after a smooth return, typically within a few business days. To avoid deposit issues, document the RV's condition with photos at pickup and drop-off in Valley Cottage, return it with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and empty the tanks if your host requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAny insider tips for a Valley Cottage RV trip?
Here's the local intel most visitors miss. First, use Valley Cottage as your launchpad: you're 35 miles north of midtown Manhattan but minutes from Hook Mountain, Nyack Beach, and the Hudson River Greenway, a rare combo. Second, drive the 9W corridor up to Bear Mountain at sunrise on a fall weekend, you'll have the overlooks to yourself before the day-trippers from NYC arrive around 10 a.m. Third, stock up at the ShopRite in Nanuet or Stew Leonard's on Route 59 before heading to Harriman, prices drop sharply once you're outside the park. Fourth, the Nyack farmer's market every Thursday is a perfect first-night dinner stop. Book your rig today and start mapping the loop, autumn weekends go fast.
