Campgrounds and RV parks near Van Etten, NY

Waterfall hiking is the anchor activity in the area. At Robert H Treman State Park, winding trails follow the gorge past 12 waterfalls, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, to where visitors can see a mile-and-a-half down the wooded gorge as it winds its way to the lower park, with nine miles of hiking trails and a stream-fed pool beneath a waterfall for swimming. Buttermilk Falls State Park adds a second gorge system with its own swimming area and rim trails. History sits close by at North - Newtown Battlefield State Park, which preserves a pivotal Revolutionary War site from the Sullivan-Clinton Campaign. The Tollhouse Boat Launch offers small boat and canoe or kayak access to the Chemung River, only 4 miles from Newtown's campground, putting flatwater paddling within easy reach. Downtown Ithaca, Cornell University, and Finger Lakes wineries are within short driving range for day trips off the campsite.

The public campgrounds in this region operate on a strict seasonal calendar. Robert H Treman runs from about May 15 to November 7, while Newtown Battlefield's campground and cabins operate roughly from mid-May through mid-October, and Buttermilk Falls follows a similar mid-May to mid-October window. Off-season, the parks themselves stay open for day-use walking, but campground gates, showers, and water are closed. Summer weekends are the busiest window. Sites in the gorge parks fill early for July, August, and Columbus Day weekend, and cabin rules tighten during peak weeks. During peak season, cabins require a 7 or 14-night minimum stay, from Saturday to Saturday only. Waterfall swimming areas are staffed with lifeguards through this stretch. Spring and late fall trade crowds for cold nights and unpredictable weather in upstate New York, so campers should come prepared for rain and cool temperatures. Snow can linger into April and return in November. Newtown is open for recreation year-round, but winter access is dawn to dusk only by foot from the bottom of the hill, with no facilities open.

Expect wooded, gorge-adjacent campgrounds rather than resort layouts. At Robert H Treman, sites split between an older loop with limited electric hookups and newer, more open sites. The park offers 72 campsites, with 11 electrical hook-up sites and 61 no utility hook-up sites for RVs. Big rigs should study site maps carefully, as tree-lined loops can make navigation tight. North - Newtown Battlefield State Park is smaller and more rustic. The Main Campground features 18 campsites, most of which are primitive and can only hold a rig up to 20 feet long, though two electric sites can accommodate an RV, camper, or trailer up to 40 feet long. Water in the park is limited, so arrive with tanks filled. The state park campgrounds have hot showers, flush toilets, dump stations, fire rings, and picnic tables. Cabins are rustic, with no bedding, no cookware, and no heat.
