Campgrounds and RV parks near West End, NY

Cooperstown is the main draw. The National Baseball Hall of Fame, Fenimore Art Museum, Farmers' Museum, and Otsego Lake sit within about a half-hour drive, and Cooperstown Beaver Valley Cabins and Campsites is roughly ten minutes from the village. Youth baseball families often stay in the area during Dreams Park and All Star Village tournament weeks. Outdoor recreation is anchored by Gilbert Lake State Park. The park offers a beach, kayak and paddleboard rentals, cabins, a campground, disc golf, hunting and fishing, hiking and biking, picnic tables and pavilions, a museum, a nature trail, playgrounds, recreation programs, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing, ice-fishing, and a food concession. The park has more than 12 miles of interconnecting trails for hikers, skiers, snowmobilers and snowshoers. Glimmerglass State Park, on the north end of Otsego Lake, adds swimming and lake access. The Susquehanna River corridor offers paddling and fishing close to Oneonta itself.

The camping season in this part of central New York is short. Camping generally runs from mid-May through mid-October, with most private campgrounds closing after Columbus Day weekend. At Gilbert Lake State Park, the electric sites are available from mid-May to mid-October, and the non-electric sites are available from late May to early September. Cooperstown Beaver Valley Cabins and Campsites also runs a spring-through-fall season. Summer is peak. July and August bring the warmest weather, the largest crowds tied to Cooperstown baseball tournaments, and the tightest availability at family-friendly parks. Booking well ahead is important during Hall of Fame Induction Weekend and Dreams Park tournament weeks. Spring and fall are quieter. Early May can be cold and muddy, and overnight lows near freezing are common into mid-May. Fall foliage typically peaks in early to mid-October, after which most private campgrounds and state park loops close. Winter camping is not offered at the listed parks, though Gilbert Lake stays open for day-use cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Sites in this area lean rustic and wooded rather than resort-style. Hilltop Campground offers a mix of standard sites and electric hookup sites, with the electric hookup sites offering 30- and 50-amp electric hookups, and guests use a dump station located near the campground entrance. A New York State vehicle use fee applies at the park entrance. For all campsites, a maximum of 6 people applies, regardless of age. Private campgrounds near Cooperstown are more family-oriented. Cooperstown Beaver Valley Cabins and Campsites offers a fire ring and picnic table at each site, along with a pool, playground, and on-site baseball fields. Expect quiet hours enforced at most private parks and buggy conditions in deeper wooded sites, especially in early summer.
