West Nyack camping overview
West Nyack sits in Rockland County in New York's Lower Hudson Valley, roughly 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge and within easy reach of Harriman State Park, one of the largest state parks in New York. The area gives RV travelers a rare combination: quick access to Manhattan by road, PATH, or ferry, and a cluster of wooded state-park campgrounds in the Hudson Highlands to the north and west.
Options range from full-hookup private parks that stay open year-round to primitive, no-hookup state campgrounds that run only from spring through mid-fall. RV length limits are common at the state parks, with 30 feet the typical maximum at Beaver Pond in Harriman and 40 feet at Pelton Pond in Clarence Fahnestock. Travelers using West Nyack as a base can reach hiking, swimming beaches, Appalachian Trail access points, and the NYC skyline within an hour, making it a practical staging area for a Hudson Valley or metro-area trip.
Things to do near West Nyack
Harriman State Park is the main outdoor draw, with more than 200 miles of trails, 31 lakes, and swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati. Sections of the Appalachian Trail cross both Harriman and Clarence Fahnestock State Park to the north, and the Pelton Pond Loop Trail offers an easy 1.5-mile walk directly from the campground.
Canopus Lake in Fahnestock has a sandy beach, boat rentals, and fishing for bass and panfish. Closer to the city, campers based at Liberty Harbor RV Park can walk to the PATH train or catch a weekday ferry to Wall Street for a day in Manhattan. Rockland Lake State Park, Bear Mountain, and the Stony Point Battlefield historic site are all short drives from West Nyack.

How to book campgrounds near West Nyack
New York State Parks campgrounds, including Beaver Pond and Pelton Pond, are booked through ReserveAmerica. Sites open on a rolling nine-month advance window, with weekday releases at 8 a.m. and weekend releases at 9 a.m. during the March through Labor Day period. Reservations outside the nine-month window cannot be changed or cancelled until 18 days after booking.
Private parks such as Black Bear RV Park and Liberty Harbor RV Park handle reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and fall-foliage weekends fill first, so booking as far ahead as possible is recommended. Same-day state-park reservations are permitted only until 3 p.m., and walk-ins are not accepted.
What to expect camping near West Nyack
Expect a mix of urban-adjacent RV parks and rustic state-park campgrounds. Beaver Pond has flush restrooms, showers, laundry, and a dump station, but no electrical hookups, and RVs are capped at 30 feet. Pelton Pond has restrooms, showers, potable water, and accepts larger rigs. Black Bear RV Park offers full hookups with 20, 30, and 50 amp service, cable TV, and Wi-Fi.
Liberty Harbor is essentially a paved lot at a marina with 30 and 50 amp electric, water, a dump station, restrooms, showers, and laundry. Black bears are present in Harriman and the Hudson Highlands, so food storage discipline matters. Deer ticks carry Lyme disease in this region, so insect repellent and tick checks are recommended.
