Campgrounds near West Point
West Point sits on the west bank of the Hudson River in the Hudson Highlands, about an hour north of New York City. RV travelers in this area choose between New York state park campgrounds in the surrounding Highlands and private RV parks scattered through the Hudson Valley to the north and west.
The closest state park option is Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, a primitive campground adjacent to Lake Welch with sites for tents and smaller RVs. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park, north of West Point in Putnam County, has a similar feel along a wooded ridge above the pond. For full hookups and resort-style amenities, the New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River cater to families with RVs. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, in Dutchess County, offers full-hookup RV sites on a private lake. Most of these campgrounds operate seasonally from spring through fall.
Things to do near West Point
A section of the Appalachian Trail passes through Clarence Fahnestock park, and the surrounding Hudson Highlands hold dozens more trails for day hikes. Canopus Lake, with its sandy shore and nearby picnic area, is the jewel of Fahnestock, and fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and in the park's four ponds is excellent in all seasons for anglers seeking bass, pickerel, perch, or brook and rainbow trout. Rowboats and kayaks are available for rental at Canopus Lake. Harriman State Park offers swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati plus an extensive trail network. West Point itself draws visitors for the United States Military Academy tours and Hudson River overlooks. Nearby Hudson Valley attractions include wineries, cider houses, pick-your-own farms, and the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park.

The camping season in the Hudson Highlands runs roughly from mid-spring through late fall. The Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse, while the Group Wilderness Campground remains open. Beaver Pond at Harriman opens in spring and stays busy through fall, with spring and summer the busiest seasons and the best times for paddling and swimming. The Newburgh KOA and Sylvan Lake Beach Park operate roughly through the warm-weather months.
Summer weekends and holidays book out fastest. Fall brings cooler nights, peak foliage in October, and thinner crowds. Winter shuts most campgrounds; the surrounding state parks remain open for day use, with 15 kilometers of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as an area for sledding at Fahnestock Winter Park.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book
New York state park campgrounds use the ReserveAmerica system. Bookings can easily be secured online or by phone, up to nine months in advance, and from mid-May to early October, same-day reservations are permitted only until 3pm. Reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267. Walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Weekend sites at Beaver Pond go quickly, so book the moment the nine-month window opens.
Private campgrounds such as the Newburgh KOA, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River, and Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For holiday weekends, plan to lock in sites several months ahead.
What to expect
Sites at the state parks are rustic. Beaver Pond Campground has no hookups and is best suited to tent campers, but it can accommodate smaller RVs, trailers, and campervans up to 30 feet long. There are no electrical hookups for trailers at this campground, and alcohol is not permitted. Pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch. Pelton Pond operates as a primitive camping area with no electric, water, or sewer hookups, and no dump station, though it is closed for the 2026 season.
Private RV parks offer the opposite end of the spectrum. The Newburgh KOA has pull-thru and back-in RV sites with full hookups, tent sites, cabins, Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and a camp store, plus pools and family activities. Sylvan Lake Beach Park sits on wooded acres along a private lake with full-hookup RV sites and rustic tent sites. Cell service is generally reliable across the region.

Weekday bookings in May or late September are noticeably cheaper than peak summer weekends around West Point graduation or Army football Saturdays. To find a cheap RV rental West Point travelers love, filter by travel trailers, book at least 30 days out, and consider a Sunday-to-Thursday trip when host discounts often appear.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Point%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in West Point, NY?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in West Point, NY. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your identity through the platform during booking, so there's no awkward paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward it is to get rolling toward the Hudson Highlands.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong near West Point?
You can book with confidence: every RV rental in West Point, NY booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. You choose your protection level at checkout, not the host, and it covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip. That means if a deer darts across Route 9W at dusk or you scrape a low branch at Round Pond Recreation Area, you have real financial backup. Review the available plans on RVezy before booking so you know exactly what is covered for your Hudson Valley trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my West Point RV trip changes?
Booking your West Point RV trip is genuinely low risk. RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation policy for every rental on the platform, which keeps things consistent and fair. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, and additional protections apply for host cancellations, with refunds or credits issued to guests. Plans shifted because of an Army football schedule change or a family emergency? Reach out to RVezy support and they will walk you through your options. You can review the full cancellation terms on the RVezy Help Center before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in West Point?
Absolutely, and many travelers do. To find a pet-friendly RV rental West Point hosts offer, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and message the host about your dog's size and breed. Once you are here, Bear Mountain State Park welcomes leashed dogs on most trails (though not in swim areas), and the Appalachian Trail crossings around Fort Montgomery are a dog-walker's dream. Note that Beaver Pond Campground inside Harriman State Park does not allow pets, so book a private campground like Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY instead. Pro tip: pack a tick remover, deer ticks are common in the Hudson Highlands.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/pets.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground near West Point?
Yes, RV delivery West Point travelers love is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers nervous about driving a big rig through the winding roads of the Hudson Highlands. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at Round Pond Recreation Area, Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, or a private spot in Cornwall-on-Hudson, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your campsite number and dates for a stress-free West Point RV trip with zero driving required.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Point%2C%20New%20YorkHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from West Point?
Your West Point base puts some of the Northeast's best road trips within an easy day's drive. New York City is just 50 miles south (about 90 minutes via the Palisades Parkway), the Catskills around Phoenicia are roughly 70 miles northwest, the Adirondacks near Lake George sit about 180 miles north, and Niagara Falls is a doable 400-mile haul if you have a week. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer journeys. Message the host before booking to confirm what fits your route.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Point%2C%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near West Point, NY?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping West Point options. Beaver Pond Campground inside Harriman State Park sits 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge with 125 sites, lake swimming, and platform sites for RVs up to about 30 feet. Round Pond Recreation Area on the West Point military reservation offers 28 RV sites with electric and water hookups (DOD ID required). Cornwall's nearby private parks like Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY and Newburgh KOA Holiday provide full hookups, pools, and family amenities. For a quieter feel, Clarence Fahnestock State Park is about 20 miles north with wooded sites along Canopus Lake.
parks.ny.gov/visit/state-parks/beaver-pond-campgrounds-harriman-state-parkWhen is the best time to visit West Point in an RV?
Late spring through mid-October is prime time for a West Point RV trip. Summer highs sit in the low 80s F with warm evenings perfect for campfires, while September and early October bring crisp 60s-70s F days and Hudson Valley fall foliage that turns Bear Mountain into a kaleidoscope of red and gold. Winters drop into the 20s and 30s F with regular snow, so most campgrounds (including Beaver Pond and Round Pond) close from late October through April. Insider tip: book Columbus Day weekend a year in advance, peak leaf-peeping draws RVers from across the Northeast.
weather.gov/okx/I have never driven an RV before, will I be okay around West Point?
You have got this, and the Hudson Valley is a great place to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, and the toilet, so you are never tossed the keys and abandoned. For first time renting an RV trips near West Point, stick to wider roads like US-9W, US-6, and the Palisades Interstate Parkway, which handle larger rigs comfortably. Avoid Storm King Highway (NY-218), beautiful but narrow and cliff-hugging. Even better, book a host who offers delivery so the RV is already parked and set up when you arrive. Your trip starts with marshmallows, not stress.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002179393-For-rentersWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my West Point trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on the Bear Mountain Bridge approach or the generator quits at Round Pond, help is one phone call away. Roadside covers towing, jump-starts, tire changes, lockouts, and fuel delivery throughout New York State. Your host is also typically reachable by phone or in-app message for quick fixes like resetting a tripped breaker. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave, cell service can get spotty in the Highlands around Popolopen Gorge and Mine Torne Road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my West Point RV rental into Canada or another state?
Multi-state road trips from West Point are absolutely doable, you are a short hop from Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Vermont. Most RVezy hosts allow travel throughout the continental U.S., and many will approve a Canadian border crossing into Ontario or Quebec if you ask in advance, since protection coverage can extend across the border with host approval. Message the host before booking and confirm your itinerary in writing. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the protection plan does not extend there. Popular cross-state routes from West Point include the Berkshires, the Pocono Mountains, and coastal Rhode Island.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of gas mileage and fuel budget should I plan for?
Budget smart and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Most Class C motorhomes around West Point get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG) on regular gas, campervans get 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Gas prices in Orange and Rockland counties typically run slightly above the national average, so expect to pay a bit more than you would in, say, Pennsylvania. For a typical 4-night, 200-mile West Point RV trip in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Insider tip: fill up in Highland Falls or Central Valley before heading north, prices climb noticeably once you enter the Catskills.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near West Point?
Book early and you will have your pick of the best sites. For Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, reservations open up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and summer weekends (especially around July 4 and Labor Day) fill quickly. Round Pond Recreation Area takes RV reservations starting early in the season. Private campgrounds like Newburgh KOA and Black Bear Campground often have availability 2-4 weeks out, even in peak summer. For the best campgrounds near West Point in fall foliage season, lock in your spot by July, Columbus Day weekend is the single busiest camping weekend in the Hudson Valley.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around West Point?
Driving an RV around West Point is very manageable if you stick to the main routes. US-9W and US-6 are wide, well-maintained, and handle motorhomes easily, and the Palisades Interstate Parkway has a noncommercial vehicle restriction so you'll want to confirm your RV qualifies (most personal motorhomes do). Two roads to avoid in a larger rig: NY-218 Storm King Highway, which is narrow with sheer drops, and the Bear Mountain Bridge approach during fall weekends when leaf-peeper traffic backs up for miles. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk and occasional black bear sightings near Harriman. Insider tip: cross the Hudson via the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge (I-84) rather than Bear Mountain Bridge when towing.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/511What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near West Point?
Hudson Valley campgrounds offer a good mix of comfort and outdoorsy charm. Round Pond Recreation Area has electric and water hookups (no sewer at site) plus a dump station, hot showers, laundromat, and propane refills. Beaver Pond Campground has comfort stations, showers, laundry, and a dump station but no electric hookups at sites, so you'll rely on your RV's battery and generator. Private parks like Newburgh KOA and Black Bear Campground offer full hookups including 30/50-amp electric, sewer, Wi-Fi, and pools. Need to fill fresh water on the road? Most New York State Parks campgrounds let day visitors use spigots, and the Mobil station on US-9W in Fort Montgomery is RV-friendly.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's inside the RVs available to rent in West Point?
You'll feel right at home from the moment you step inside. RVs on RVezy near West Point typically come with real beds (queen masters, bunk beds, and convertible dinettes), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control, and dining/living space. Class C motorhomes and travel trailers usually sleep 4 to 8, while campervans suit couples or small families. Most include linens, kitchenware, and outdoor chairs, and many add a TV, Bluetooth speaker, generator, or solar setup. Seatbelts are provided for all designated travel passengers. For a motorhome rental West Point families love, filter by Sleeps 6+ and look for an outdoor awning, perfect for those Hudson River sunset evenings.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in West Point?
Hosts offer all kinds of helpful extras to customize your trip. Common add-ons for a campervan rental West Point or motorhome booking include bike racks ($25-$50), generators ($15-$30/night), kitchen kits, linens and towels, camp chairs, propane fills, and pet cleaning fees ($50-$100). Pickup is usually at the host's home or a meeting point in Highland Falls, Cornwall, Newburgh, or New Windsor, with delivery available for an additional fee based on distance. Most hosts include 100-150 free miles per night with extra miles around $0.35-$0.50 each. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you're heading to Beaver Pond Campground, which has no electrical hookups at the sites.
consumer.ftc.gov/articles/buying-or-leasing-carHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in West Point, NY?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay the full booking total through RVezy when you reserve (credit card, debit card, or other supported methods), so there is no cash handoff with the host at pickup. The security deposit is held separately by RVezy, not the host, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV's value, and it is refunded shortly after your trip if there is no damage and you return the RV with the agreed-upon fuel and cleanliness levels. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, follow the host's mileage and generator-hour limits, and dump tanks at Round Pond or the Newburgh KOA before returning.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I legally park an RV overnight in the West Point area?
For a legal, comfortable overnight near West Point, NY, plan on a campground rather than a roadside pull-off. New York State limits non-commercial parking at NYSDOT rest areas to 3 hours and Thruway service areas to 4 hours, so they work for a quick break but not a full night. Instead, head to Beaver Pond Campground, Round Pond Recreation Area, Newburgh KOA Holiday, or Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY, all within 30 minutes of West Point. Some Walmart locations along US-9W (call ahead to confirm) and Cracker Barrel in Newburgh sometimes allow self-contained RVs to overnight, ask the manager first. For an authentic Hudson Valley vibe, book a Harvest Hosts winery in nearby Marlboro.
