Camping near Amity Gardens, Pennsylvania
Amity Gardens sits in Berks County in southeastern Pennsylvania, within easy reach of the wooded ridges of the Schuylkill Highlands and the rolling farmland of Lancaster and Chester counties. RV renters use the area as a base for state park camping, Amish country day trips, and Philadelphia visits, since the region is about an hour northwest of the city.
The closest full-service public campground is French Creek State Park, which offers about 200 single-family campsites in Pennsylvania's largest block of contiguous forest between New York City and Washington D.C., with a mix of non-electric, electric, and full-hookup sites and a dump station. The park surrounds Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site. Private options within a short drive include Lazy-K Campground Inc and Brandywine Creek Campground.
For travelers pushing west toward Lancaster County and Dutch Country attractions, Sun Outdoors Lancaster County and Sun Retreats Lancaster County offer resort-style RV parks with hookups and family amenities, useful for renters who want pools and organized activities alongside big-rig-friendly sites.
Things to do near Amity Gardens
About 35 miles of forested trails radiate from French Creek State Park, open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, with a disc golf course rounding out the day-use options. Scotts Run Lake and Hopewell Lake offer fishing for smallmouth bass and boating, and boat rentals run on summer weekends. Swimming happens at a concession-run pool near Hopewell Lake rather than in the lakes themselves.
History travelers can walk from the campground into Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site to tour the restored ironworks. Farther afield, Daniel Boone Homestead, Marsh Creek State Park, and the Brandywine Valley museums fill additional days.
Westbound trips reach Lancaster County's covered bridges, farm markets, and the Strasburg Rail Road, while eastbound routes lead to Valley Forge National Historical Park and central Philadelphia in roughly an hour.

Peak RV season runs from late spring through mid-fall. Campsites can book up fast at French Creek, especially during peak season from April through October and on holiday weekends, so Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends need advance planning. Trails get busy through summer, and forest hikes are strongest in fall against a backdrop of colorful foliage, typically peaking in mid to late October.
Shoulder seasons offer easier reservations and cooler hiking weather. Spring brings wildflowers and higher creek flows but also the wettest stretches, so renters should expect muddy sites in April and check tick precautions before hitting trails.
Winter changes the map. The main campground at French Creek is open from March through the first weekend in January, while cabins can be booked year round. Most private RV parks in the region close or limit services from late fall until spring, so confirm dates directly before booking a cold-weather trip.

How to book near Amity Gardens
State park sites at French Creek are reserved through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. The park lists 226 sites including cabins, yurts, and cottages, with reservations opening 11 months in advance and a minimum three-day lead time before arrival. Popular summer weekends often sell out the day the 11-month window opens.
Private parks such as Lazy-K Campground Inc, Brandywine Creek Campground, Sun Outdoors Lancaster County, and Sun Retreats Lancaster County take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and most require deposits with stricter cancellation windows for holiday weeks.
When booking an RV rental, confirm site length, hookup type (electric, water, sewer), and any big-rig turning restrictions, since some loops at French Creek favor smaller rigs.
What to expect at Amity Gardens campgrounds
Expect wooded, hilly terrain with mixed hardwood canopy. Road access at French Creek requires navigating narrow, winding routes with hills that can challenge larger RVs, cell service is spotty throughout the park, and there is no camp store, so firewood must be purchased from local vendors along the access roads or nearby towns. Plan to arrive with groceries and download offline maps.
Site surfaces vary. Some pet-friendly loops offer varied terrain, though rocky ground can complicate tent setup, while full-hookup RV sites cluster together with tighter spacing. Amenities include hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station, and a seasonal concession pool.
Private parks toward Lancaster County tend to be more open, with pull-through sites, pools, and playgrounds, but sit closer to farmland and highways rather than deep forest.
