Camping near Atglen, Pennsylvania
Atglen sits in southern Chester County, on the edge of Pennsylvania Dutch Country and within an easy drive of Lancaster, New Holland, and Strasburg. RV travelers use it as a base for Amish farmland tours, covered-bridge routes, and family attractions like Dutch Wonderland and the Strasburg Railroad. The surrounding countryside is rolling farmland with wooded ridges, and most campgrounds sit on private acreage rather than inside state parks.
Private resorts dominate the immediate area. Spring Gulch RV Campground occupies 115 acres in the Amish Farmlands and Welsh Mountains near New Holland, with two swimming pools (one Olympic-sized and one heated), a stocked fishing lake, and a spring-fed lake with a white sandy beach. The Loose Caboose Campground is a 26-acre, second-generation family-owned property in Kinzers with large wooded sites, and Roamers Retreat Campground, Lancaster / New Holland KOA Journey, and Birchview Farm Campgrounds round out the closest options.
For public-land camping, French Creek State Park lies roughly a half-hour north and offers wooded sites, cabins, and yurts inside one of the largest contiguous forests in southeastern Pennsylvania.
Things to do near Atglen
Amish Country is the main draw. Buggy tours, farm markets, Kitchen Kettle Village, and the Strasburg Railroad are all within a short drive, and back-road cycling through farmland is popular from spring through fall. The Enola Low Grade Trail runs near Atglen and offers flat, rail-trail miles suitable for families and e-bikes.
Water and woods sit close by too. French Creek State Park has miles of hiking, mountain-biking, and equestrian trails, two lakes for fishing and non-powered boating, a swimming pool in summer, and disc-golf and orienteering courses. Adjacent Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site preserves a restored 19th-century iron-making village.
On-site amenities vary by campground. Spring Gulch adds mini golf, tennis, a dance barn, and themed weekends, while smaller parks like The Loose Caboose lean toward quiet wooded sites and campfires.

The main private-campground season runs from early April through late October or early November. Spring Gulch typically operates April through late October, and most other resorts near Lancaster follow a similar window. The Loose Caboose Campground is open year round, with many sites available in every season and a heated bathhouse for cooler months.
French Creek State Park is open year round, with the campground and cabins available through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. Reservations open eleven months in advance, and Pennsylvania DCNR has reported a sharp increase in camping reservations as some federal campgrounds have reduced services.
Summer weekends and fall foliage weekends are the busiest periods, drawing weekend travelers from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and the New Jersey suburbs. Booking eight to twelve weeks ahead is realistic for holiday weekends. Shoulder-season weekdays in April, May, September, and October offer cooler weather, thinner crowds, and easier site selection.

How to book a campsite near Atglen
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations. Spring Gulch books through its resort website and takes weekend, weekly, and seasonal stays, with cancellation windows that lengthen for long-term bookings. The Loose Caboose Campground uses a request form followed by confirmation and a deposit, with weekly discount rates and a three-night minimum plus a surcharge on holidays and special-event weekends.
French Creek State Park and other Pennsylvania state parks use the statewide reservation system online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Sites can be booked up to eleven months in advance, with reservations released at noon Eastern Time.
For peak-season summer and fall-foliage weekends, secure full-hookup pull-through sites first, then adjust travel dates. Family-focused resorts with pools and organized activities fill earliest.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is gently rolling farmland with wooded ridges. Roads into some campgrounds are narrow and hilly. The Loose Caboose has heavily wooded, secluded sites reached by internal roads that can be bumpy, and Spring Gulch has an Elite section reached by a steep hill where bikes, skates, and scooters must be walked down. Big-rig pull-throughs are available at Spring Gulch and the Lancaster / New Holland KOA Journey, while smaller family parks tend toward back-in sites.
Expect full hookups (water, electric, sewer) at most private parks, with 30- and 50-amp service and Wi-Fi that varies in strength. State-park sites are more rustic, with modern bathhouses and a limited number of electric sites.
Cell coverage is generally solid near Atglen but can drop off inside French Creek State Park, so download maps in advance. Spotted lanternfly is present in the region.
