Campgrounds near Avoca overview
Avoca sits in northeastern Pennsylvania's Lackawanna Valley, wedged between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre and served by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. The location puts RV renters within a short drive of two DCNR state parks, the Endless Mountains, and the Lehigh Gorge corridor, making it a practical base for a Pocono or northern-tier trip.
The closest developed camping is Frances Slocum State Park in Luzerne County southwest of the city, and the 1,445-acre Lackawanna State Park about ten miles north of Scranton. Both are run by Pennsylvania's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and use the state's central reservation system.
Private options round out the mix. Highland Campgrounds and Benton Hills Mobile Home Park handle longer stays and full-hookup needs closer to town, while Lehigh Gorge Campground sits south near the rail-trail and whitewater rafting put-ins on the Lehigh River, useful for families combining paddling or biking with an RV trip.
Things to do near Avoca
Frances Slocum State Park's lake draws boaters and anglers, and the park has hiking and mountain biking trails plus a large day-use area for picnics. Non-powered and electric boats are allowed on the lake, and a seasonal swimming pool operates in the day-use area.
Lackawanna State Park is anchored by the 198-acre Lackawanna Lake, surrounded by picnic areas and multi-use trails winding through forest, with boating, fishing, mountain biking, and swimming as popular activities. No gas motors are allowed on the water, which keeps things noticeably quieter on the lake.
South of the city, Lehigh Gorge Campground puts riders close to the Lehigh Gorge State Park rail-trail, a mostly flat crushed-stone route through the gorge that is popular with families and e-bike renters. Whitewater rafting outfitters operate along the same corridor on scheduled dam-release weekends.

State-park camping around Avoca is strictly seasonal. The Lackawanna campground opens the second Friday in April and closes October 14, and Frances Slocum follows a similar April-to-October window. Outside those dates the parks remain open for day use, but campsites, showers, and dump stations are closed.
Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RVs. Blackfly and mosquito pressure peaks in June, humidity builds through July and August, and biting insects ease off by mid-September. Fall foliage in the surrounding ridges typically peaks in mid to late October, which lines up with the final camping weekend at the state parks.
Winter brings snow and cold snaps that can drop temperatures well below freezing. Private parks with year-round sites still operate, but water hookups are usually shut off from late November through March, and RVers need freshwater tanks and heated hoses.

How to book a site
Pennsylvania state parks use a single central system for reservations. Reservations must be made three days ahead of arrival and can be made up to eleven months in advance. Bookings can be made online through the DCNR site or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday.
Summer weekends at Frances Slocum and Lackawanna fill early, especially loops with electric hookups sized for larger rigs. Booking as soon as the eleven-month window opens is the safest approach for holiday weekends and October foliage dates.
Private parks including Highland Campgrounds, Benton Hills Mobile Home Park, and Lehigh Gorge Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Longer-stay and seasonal sites are common at the private parks, so nightly RV inventory can be limited in peak weeks.
What to expect on site
State-park sites in the region are wooded and relatively level, with gravel or paved pads. Mature forest covers most of Lackawanna State Park Campground, which runs along Lackawanna Lake and draws a range of camping styles from RV rigs to walk-in tent sites to yurts and camper cabins, though site spacing varies noticeably across the loops. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, and the campgrounds provide flush toilets, showers, drinking water, and a sanitary dump station. Pets are permitted only on designated sites and loops.
Cell coverage is generally usable at both state parks, and the closest full-service grocery, propane, and RV supply stores are in Wyoming, Dallas, and the Scranton suburbs. The maximum camping period is 14 consecutive days in the summer season and 21 consecutive days in the off-season, which is enough for most family trips but worth planning around for longer itineraries.
