Campgrounds near Benton, Pennsylvania
Benton sits along Fishing Creek in Columbia County, at the southern edge of Pennsylvania's Endless Mountains region. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to Ricketts Glen State Park, a 13,193-acre park in Luzerne, Sullivan, and Columbia counties. Small-town services, fuel, and groceries are close by, and Route 487 links the borough directly to the park entrance.
Campground options within a short drive include Mill Race Golf and Camping Resort, Whispering Pines Camping Estates, Deihls Camping Resort, Indian Head Campground, and the campground inside Ricketts Glen State Park itself. Private resorts tend to run seasonally with full hookups, pools, and family programming, while the state park mixes tent and trailer sites with cabins and cottages.
Mill Race Golf and Camping Resort combines an 18-hole golf course with a full-service RV park in the Endless Mountains. That mix of private-resort amenities and public-land access defines the area for most RV renters.
Things to do near Benton
The main draw is Ricketts Glen. The park harbors the Glens Natural Area, a National Natural Landmark, and the Falls Trail System explores a series of wild, free-flowing waterfalls, with the 94-foot Ganoga Falls the highest of 22 named waterfalls. Other popular activities include horseback riding, fishing, and boating on Lake Jean, and winter activities include snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.
Around Benton, Fishing Creek is a well-known trout stream, and Route 487 gives access to backroads through the Endless Mountains. Families staying at Mill Race Golf and Camping Resort can play the on-site course, and Knoebels Amusement Resort is a common day trip from the area.

Summer is the busiest window. The park is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset, and summer is the best time to visit if the waterfalls are the goal. Private resorts near Benton typically operate on a seasonal calendar, generally opening in mid-spring and closing in mid-fall, so late-season and shoulder-season RV renters should confirm dates with the property before booking.
Spring brings high water in the glens and reliable trout fishing on Fishing Creek. Fall delivers foliage across the Endless Mountains through October, with cooler nights that suit RV travel. Winter camping is limited: most of the tent and trailer sites at Ricketts Glen close for winter, though a few campsites and all cabins stay available for winter stays.
One key seasonal note for hikers: the Falls Trail system typically closes for the winter in late November or early December and, as weather conditions allow, usually reopens in March or April.

How to book a campsite near Benton
Ricketts Glen State Park uses the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. Online reservations for day use and overnight facilities can be made, or call toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Lakeside sites on Lake Jean and holiday weekends book out early, so plan ahead for peak dates.
Private campgrounds near Benton, including Mill Race Golf and Camping Resort, Whispering Pines Camping Estates, Deihls Camping Resort, and Indian Head Campground, handle their own reservations by phone or on their websites. Seasonal-site holders occupy many spots at private parks through the summer, so transient RV renters should call ahead to confirm big-rig length limits, hookups, and pet policies.
What to expect
Access to Ricketts Glen involves terrain that matters for RV drivers. The campground sits within the state park, accessible via a steep two-mile climb on an 18% grade that challenges larger RVs, and divides into a large loop on a peninsula in Lake Jean and a smaller loop offering full hookups for RVs up to 15 feet. Renters in longer coaches should route carefully and consider private resorts closer to town.
Campground amenities include hot showers, restrooms with flush toilets, and a dump station. There is little to no cellular service at Ricketts Glen State Park, so the nearest full-service grocery stops are in Benton, Bloomsburg, and the Back Mountain area.
