Big Bass Lake camping overview
Big Bass Lake is a private gated community and census-designated place in Lackawanna and Wayne counties in northeastern Pennsylvania, sitting on the Pocono Plateau at about 1,830 feet in elevation. The surrounding Pocono Mountains region is where visitors actually camp, since the Big Bass Lake community itself is private and gated for residents and their guests. Public and private campgrounds within a short drive give RV travelers access to lakes, hardwood forests, and the broader Pocono recreation corridor between Scranton and the Delaware Water Gap.
Tobyhanna State Park lies just west of Big Bass Lake and anchors the public camping options, with a 135-site campground on a 170-acre lake inside a 5,440-acre park. Private parks nearby include Hemlock Campground and Cottages, Mount Pocono Campground, Pocono Raceway Campground, and Peaceful Woodlands Family Campground, each offering hookup sites for RVs plus tent and cabin options.
Things to do around Big Bass Lake
The Tobyhanna Lake loop trail runs about five miles around the lake and is popular with hikers and mountain bikers, with lake access for swimming, kayaking, and boat rentals during the warm months. Anglers fish Tobyhanna Lake and nearby Gouldsboro State Park for bass, pickerel, and panfish. Motorsports fans can catch race weekends at Pocono Raceway, and families often build day trips around Kalahari Resorts, Mount Airy Casino, and the shops in Mount Pocono. Fall foliage drives across the Pocono Plateau are a draw from late September into October, while winter brings snow tubing and skiing at regional resorts. State game lands and rail-trail segments add quieter options for wildlife watching and gravel riding.

How to book campgrounds near Big Bass Lake
Tobyhanna State Park sites are booked through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system operated on ReserveAmerica, either online or by phone at 888-PA-PARKS. Reservations open up to 11 months in advance and must be made at least three days before arrival, so summer weekends and holiday dates should be locked in early. Pet-friendly sites are limited to specific numbered loops and carry an additional fee. For Hemlock Campground and Cottages, Mount Pocono Campground, Pocono Raceway Campground, and Peaceful Woodlands Family Campground, book directly through each operator's website or by phone. Race weekends at Pocono Raceway and summer holidays fill first, so travelers with a fixed schedule should reserve as soon as dates are set.
What to expect at Big Bass Lake campgrounds
Expect wooded, tree-lined sites on the Pocono Plateau, with a mix of hookup levels depending on the park. Tobyhanna State Park offers sites with water and electric hookups, flush toilets, showers, water spigots, a playground, and a sanitary dump station between the park office and the campground entrance, but no full sewer hookups at individual sites. Hemlock Campground and Cottages provides level RV sites with 30-amp electric, water, cable, and sewer hookups, plus a heated pool, laundry, a camp store, and cottage rentals. Cell coverage is variable in the woods and along interior park roads. Nighttime temperatures run cool because of the elevation, so campers should pack extra layers even in summer. Alcohol is prohibited in Pennsylvania State Parks, including the Tobyhanna campground.
