Camping near Birchwood Lakes
Birchwood Lakes is a small private lake community in Pike County, Pennsylvania, tucked in the ridges above the Delaware River. The area sits inside the Pocono Mountains and borders the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, a corridor that protects roughly 70,000 acres along 40 miles of the longest free-flowing river east of the Mississippi. Most RV campgrounds within a short drive fall on either the Pennsylvania or New Jersey side of the river.
The closest developed option is Dingmans Campground, a 65-acre, 134-site rustic property along the Delaware River operated as a National Park Service concession. Across the river in New Jersey, Stream Mill Area - Stokes State Forest offers primitive tent-oriented sites, while Kymers Camping Resort near Branchville provides full-hookup RV sites in the Kittatinny Mountains. River Beach Campsites on the Delaware-Kittatinny Canoes sits just south with wooded and riverfront sites geared to paddlers.
Together these campgrounds cover the range from primitive tent camping to full-service RV resorts with pools and cable hookups.
Things to do near Birchwood Lakes
The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is the main draw. Visitors paddle, tube, fish, and swim on the Delaware River, hike the 32-mile McDade Trail that runs past the Dingmans Campground entrance, and drive to nearby waterfalls including Raymondskill and Dingmans Falls. Sections of the Appalachian Trail cross the recreation area, and public beaches at Smithfield and Milford offer supervised summer swimming in the river.
On the New Jersey side, Stokes State Forest connects to High Point State Park, which contains the highest elevation in New Jersey. Popular short hikes include Tillman Ravine, Buttermilk Falls, and the Sunset Mountain overlook facing the High Point Monument. Bushkill Falls, a privately operated series of waterfalls in the Poconos, is a common family day trip.

The primary camping season runs from spring through late October. Dingmans Campground operates seasonally from spring through mid-October, and Kymers Camping Resort runs from early April into late October. Stokes State Forest keeps some Shotwell and Lake Ocquittunk sites open year-round, while the primitive Stream Mill Area is open roughly mid-April through mid-November.
Late spring brings full waterfalls, wildflowers, and manageable crowds, though showers are frequent. Summer is peak season for river trips, tubing, and swimming, and Dingmans river sites fill quickly for weekends. Fall delivers strong foliage color, with peak Pocono color typically arriving in the second and third weeks of October across the Kittatinny Ridge and lower Pocono Plateau.
Winter camping options are limited. Snow, freezing temperatures, and reduced services mean most private RV parks close, and only a handful of hardened Stokes sites and lean-tos remain reservable.
How to book campgrounds near Birchwood Lakes
Reservation systems differ by operator. Dingmans Campground is a National Park Service concession booked directly through the campground website or by phone rather than through Recreation.gov. Reservations for the upcoming season typically open several months ahead, and advance booking is strongly recommended for summer weekends.
Stokes State Forest sites, including Stream Mill Area - Stokes State Forest, are reserved through the New Jersey State Park Service online reservation portal. Kymers Camping Resort and River Beach Campsites on the Delaware-Kittatinny Canoes handle bookings directly through their own websites.
Summer weekends and holiday periods fill early at every property in this corridor. Booking eight to twelve weeks out is realistic for July and August, and further ahead for riverfront sites and the Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends.
What to expect at campgrounds near Birchwood Lakes
Sites in this region trend rustic. Dingmans Campground is a dry facility with no alcohol permitted and a cellular dead zone across most of the property. RV sites have water and electric hookups with central dump stations located near the bathhouses, and an on-site general store sells snacks, supplies, and firewood.
Stream Mill Area - Stokes State Forest is the most primitive of the Stokes camping areas, with 27 tent-and-popup sites, an artisan well, pit toilets, and rocky ground that can make leveling difficult. Kymers offers a fuller-service experience with 30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer, and cable TV hookups, an Olympic-size heated pool, splash pad, and stocked fishing lake. River Beach Campsites on the Delaware-Kittatinny Canoes pairs RV and tent sites with on-site paddling trips run by Kittatinny Canoes.

Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID directly through the platform during checkout, so the process is quick and painless. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit and you're set. Most first-time renters in the Poconos region are surprised how simple the paperwork really is once they reach the host walkthrough.

Yes, every RV rental in Birchwood Lakes booked through RVezy comes with a built-in renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road around the Poconos with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level during checkout (not the host), so you can pick coverage that fits your family and trip. Booking with this safety net included means you can focus on the campfire, not the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Birchwood Lakes RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy to every reservation (hosts don't set their own), and it includes a full money-back grace period right after you book. After that window, refund amounts depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so your plans stay protected. You can review the full cancellation policy on the RVezy Help Center before you confirm. The takeaway: it's safe to lock in your Poconos dates now while inventory is good.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Birchwood Lakes?
Absolutely, lots of dogs join their families on Poconos road trips. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Birchwood Lakes, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see hosts who welcome four-legged guests. Once you're here, your pup will love it: leashed dogs are allowed on most trails in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, including the 32-mile McDade Recreational Trail, and Dingmans Campground in nearby Dingmans Ferry permits dogs at campsites. Promised Land State Park, about 30 minutes away, has designated pet-friendly camping loops too. Pro tip: pack a tick checker, since the wooded Pocono trails are prime tick territory from spring through fall.
nps.gov/dewa/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Birchwood Lakes?
Yes, RV delivery in Birchwood Lakes is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to RVing. Many hosts on RVezy will drive the motorhome or travel trailer right to your campsite at Dingmans Campground, Promised Land State Park, or a private rental cabin on the lake, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter when you search, and message the host to confirm the delivery address and any mileage fee. It's the stress-free way to enjoy a Poconos campervan rental in Birchwood Lakes without ever towing or driving a big rig.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038108654-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on my Birchwood Lakes RV trip?
You've got plenty of range to explore. Most RVezy hosts in the Birchwood Lakes area include 100 to 150 free miles per night, which easily covers a typical Poconos itinerary, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage (filter for it when you search). For reference, Dingmans Falls is about 6 miles away, Bushkill Falls is 16 miles south, Promised Land State Park is roughly 30 miles, and a day trip to Lake Wallenpaupack is about 35 miles. New York City is around 90 miles east and Philadelphia about 110 miles south, both well within reach for an RV road trip from Birchwood Lakes. If you're planning longer routes, message the host to add extra miles upfront, which is almost always cheaper than the per-mile overage rate.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038108414-Understanding-mileageWhere are the best campgrounds near Birchwood Lakes, PA?
You're surrounded by some of the best campgrounds near Birchwood Lakes. Dingmans Campground, about 6 miles away on the Delaware River, is the only developed campground on the PA side of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and offers RV sites with water and 20/30/50-amp electric. Promised Land State Park (30 miles west) has modern campsites with hookups in a beautiful lakefront forest. Otter Lake Camp Resort in East Stroudsburg has full-hookup RV sites with a pool and lake. For luxury, Mountain Vista Campground near Stroudsburg offers pull-throughs and resort amenities. pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites/camping-locations-map.htmlWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Birchwood Lakes?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot for RV camping in Birchwood Lakes. May through October brings comfortable temperatures: highs in the mid-60s to mid-80s Fahrenheit, cool nights perfect for campfires, and the lush Pocono greenery you came for. Late September and early October are arguably the best weeks of all, when the sugar maples and oaks across the Delaware Water Gap turn brilliant red and gold, and the summer crowds thin out. July and August are warm and busy with families, so book early. Winters are snowy and cold (often in the teens at night), which is why most campgrounds, including Dingmans, close from late October through mid-April. Plan a fall foliage Poconos RV trip and you won't regret it.
weather.gov/bgm/I'm first time renting an RV. Will I get help figuring it out?
Yes, and this is honestly the best part of renting through RVezy. Every host provides an in-person orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, water system, slide-outs, awning, propane, and dump procedures step by step. You won't be handed keys and waved off. Many Birchwood Lakes-area hosts also include a printed cheat sheet or a video link you can rewatch at the campsite. If you'd rather skip the driving learning curve entirely, book a host with delivery and they'll set the whole rig up for you at Dingmans Campground or wherever you're staying. And RVezy's customer support is available before and during your trip if any questions pop up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180074-RentersWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Poconos RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on US-209, the battery dies at a trailhead in Delaware State Forest, or something mechanical acts up at the campground, one phone call gets help dispatched to your location. Your host is also typically just a text away and knows the rig inside out, which often solves small issues in minutes. Cell service is generally solid along the main Pocono corridors (I-80, US-209, PA-739), though it can get spotty deep inside Delaware Water Gap. Pro tip: screenshot the RVezy support number and your host's contact info before you leave the driveway, just in case.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Birchwood Lakes RV rental into New York or New Jersey?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and Birchwood Lakes is perfectly positioned for it. You're 5 minutes from the Dingmans Ferry Bridge into New Jersey, about 30 miles to the New York state line, and most RVezy hosts allow trips throughout the northeastern US. Popular RV road trip routes from Birchwood Lakes include the full Delaware Water Gap loop through NJ's Worthington State Forest (about 50 miles), the Catskills in NY (around 75 miles), the Jersey Shore (roughly 120 miles), and Niagara Falls (about 350 miles). One important note: travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance, and if you'd like to cross into Canada, confirm with your host before booking. Always message the host to share your itinerary so they can flag any vehicle-specific limits.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for my Poconos RV trip?
Plan smart and fuel costs stay reasonable. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes around 8 to 12 mpg, Class A coaches around 6 to 10 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer roughly 10 to 14 mpg. With Pennsylvania gas prices generally hovering around $3.30 to $3.70 per gallon (often a bit cheaper than NY or NJ, so fill up before you cross state lines), a 200-mile weekend in a Class C might run $60 to $90 in fuel. Insider tip: the Pilot in Matamoras and the Wawa stations along Route 209 in Marshalls Creek are the most RV-friendly fueling stops near Birchwood Lakes, with high canopies and easy pull-throughs.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Birchwood Lakes RV trip?
Book early and your trip gets a whole lot smoother. Pennsylvania state parks like Promised Land allow reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official PA State Parks reservation system at 888-PA-PARKS, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day) sell out within days of opening. Dingmans Campground inside Delaware Water Gap NRA takes reservations through its own website and also fills fast in July and August. For a more flexible plan, midweek stays from mid-May to mid-June or after Labor Day usually have wide-open availability even a week out. Pro tip: pair your RV rental in Birchwood Lakes with a state park booking the same day so your dates line up perfectly.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites.htmlWhat are the local driving conditions like around Birchwood Lakes?
Driving an RV around Birchwood Lakes is very manageable for newcomers. The main routes (US-209, PA-739, and I-84) are well-paved and have generous shoulders, and traffic is light compared to anywhere closer to NYC. That said, the back roads winding through the community and toward Dingmans Falls include some tight curves, bumpy patches, and low-hanging tree branches, so take it slow in anything over 25 feet. The historic Dingmans Ferry Bridge has a $1 toll and is fine for most motorhomes, but oversized rigs should use I-84 to cross into NJ instead. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round, and in winter, expect snow and ice from December through March, which is why most renters stick to April through November.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Birchwood Lakes?
Most campgrounds within 30 miles of Birchwood Lakes are well set up for RVs. Dingmans Campground offers water and 20/30/50-amp electric hookups, modern bathhouses with hot showers, a central dump station, a camp store, and a Delaware River boat launch. Promised Land State Park has modern restrooms with flush toilets and showers, electric sites, a dump station, and lakefront beaches. Private parks like Otter Lake and Mountain Vista typically offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site), pools, and wifi. For fresh water and dumping between trips, the public dump station at Otter Lake Camp Resort is a reliable stop. Tip: pack a 25-foot freshwater hose and a 30-amp-to-50-amp dogbone adapter so you're ready at any site.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites.htmlWhat's actually included inside a Birchwood Lakes RV rental?
You'll be impressed with how turnkey RVezy rentals are. A typical motorhome rental in Birchwood Lakes comes with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable sleeping for 4 to 8 depending on layout, climate control with AC and a furnace, seatbelted travel seats, and often a TV with an antenna or smart features. Many hosts include linens, pots and pans, a coffee maker, camp chairs, and outdoor mats as standard. Generator use is common in Class C and Class A rigs, and some hosts offer wifi hotspots as an add-on for streaming after a day on the McDade Trail. Each listing spells out exactly what's included, so you'll know before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Birchwood%20Lakes%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons can I get with my motorhome rental in Birchwood Lakes?
Hosts offer a great mix of add-ons to customize your trip. Popular options for a motorhome rental in Birchwood Lakes include delivery and setup at Dingmans or Promised Land (priced by distance), generator hours for boondocking, bike racks, kayak racks (handy given the Delaware River is right here), portable grills, bedding and kitchen kits, and prepaid propane refills. Mileage policies are listed clearly on each RV, typically 100 to 150 free miles per night, with the option to buy extra miles upfront at a discount. Pickup is usually at the host's home in the Poconos, but message them about flexible times if you're driving in from NYC or Philly. Add-ons are selected during checkout, so you can build the perfect setup before confirming.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Birchwood%20Lakes%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host, which keeps everything tracked and protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (the amount is shown clearly on each listing before checkout) and released after your trip ends, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition it left. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick photo walkthrough with your host at both pickup and drop-off, return the rig with the same fuel and propane levels, and empty the tanks at a dump station before returning (or pay the dump fee upfront, many hosts offer it as an add-on).
