Campgrounds and RV parks near Boalsburg, PA

Boalsburg is known as the birthplace of Memorial Day and hosts the Pennsylvania Military Museum and the Columbus Chapel and Boal Mansion. Downtown has a walkable historic center with restaurants, a creamery, and small shops that work well for a rest day between drives. Outdoor time centers on Rothrock State Forest and Bald Eagle State Forest, which surround the town with hiking, mountain biking, and trout streams. Greenwood Furnace State Park adds a small six-acre swimming lake, a historic ironmaking village dating to 1834, and access to the Standing Stone and Mid State trails. Families often pair a campground stay with Penn's Cave and Wildlife Park, the Arboretum at Penn State, and Beaver Stadium tours in State College, all within a short drive of Boalsburg.

Pennsylvania state parks near Boalsburg follow a defined camping season. Greenwood Furnace State Park's tent and trailer sites are open from mid-April until mid-November, which sets the practical window for state-park RV camping in the area. Private parks typically open earlier in spring and stay open later into fall, though hookups and water service can be reduced in shoulder months. Summer is peak season. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill quickly, especially around the July 4 holiday and the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in mid-July. The Centre County Grange Fair, held in the last full week of August at Grange Park in Centre Hall, books out the fairgrounds and pushes demand at every nearby campground. Fall brings foliage across the ridges from late September through mid-October and overlaps with Penn State home football weekends, when State College area sites and Grange Fairgrounds tailgating camping fill weeks in advance. Winter camping options are limited; most state park sites close by mid-November.

Terrain near Boalsburg is ridge-and-valley country. Roads into state-forest campgrounds involve grades and narrow shoulders, so drivers of larger rigs should map routes in advance and use the campground name as a GPS point of interest rather than a street address, as Pennsylvania DCNR recommends for its parks. At Greenwood Furnace State Park, 44 of the 49 tent and trailer sites offer electric hookups, with a shower house providing flush toilets and warm showers, and a sanitary dump station at the campground entrance. Only the campground host site has full water and sewer hookups, and there is no water at individual sites. Private parks in the area more commonly offer full hookups. Cell coverage is inconsistent in the forest valleys and is essentially absent at Greenwood Furnace. Black bears are present, so food must be stored inside the RV or in hard-sided containers, and campfires can be restricted during dry spells.
