Camping near Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania
Carlisle Barracks sits in the Cumberland Valley of south-central Pennsylvania, roughly two miles north of downtown Carlisle and within easy reach of Interstate 81. The area works well as an RV base because it combines quick highway access with a dense cluster of private campgrounds and public state parks in the surrounding ridge-and-valley landscape.
Private options close to town include Western Village RV Park Inc, Deer Run Campgrounds, King's Campground, and Walmar Manor Campground, which offer full or partial hookups suitable for travel trailers, fifth wheels, and motorhomes. To the south, Mountain Creek Camp Ground sits closer to the South Mountain foothills and the edge of Michaux State Forest.
Camping near Carlisle ranges from state park tent sites and RV facilities to privately operated campgrounds with full hookups, cabins, and glamping options throughout the Cumberland Valley region. Public options include Pine Grove Furnace State Park at the northern tip of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Colonel Denning State Park in Doubling Gap, both within roughly a half-hour drive.
Things to do around Carlisle Barracks
The nearest major public land is Pine Grove Furnace State Park, southwest of Carlisle in Michaux State Forest. The 696-acre park sits at the northern tip of the Blue Ridge Mountains and includes Laurel Lake and Fuller Lake, the Appalachian Trail Museum at the trail's traditional halfway point, and the remains of the Pine Grove Iron Works. Both lakes have swimming beaches, and a rail trail links the historic village to the lakes.
Colonel Denning State Park, west of Carlisle in Doubling Gap, centers on the 3.5-acre Doubling Gap Lake with fishing, swimming, and non-powered boating, while the surrounding Tuscarora State Forest opens up extensive backcountry. Families staying at Mountain Creek Camp Ground have quick access to South Mountain trailheads. Gettysburg National Military Park and Hersheypark are both under an hour by car.

The public campground calendar in this region is tight. At Pine Grove Furnace State Park, the 70-site tent and trailer campground operates from late March to mid-December. Colonel Denning's 49-site tent and trailer campground opens on the opening day of trout season in early April and closes the day after rifle deer season in December. Private parks near Carlisle Barracks typically run a longer season, with several open year-round for self-contained rigs.
Summer is the peak booking window. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill first, followed by fall foliage weekends in October when the ridges above the Cumberland Valley turn. Appalachian Trail thru-hiker traffic peaks at Pine Grove Furnace in early summer, which adds demand at the campground and camp store.
Late fall and winter bring cold nights, occasional snow, and reduced services at the state parks. Rifle deer season in late November and early December brings hunter traffic into the surrounding state forests, so campers should wear blaze orange on shared trails.

He was great to work with. We even forgot to handoff the keys and he was very forgiving and gave us lots of options to get them returned.

Sandy went above and beyond. Leading up to the rental dates she was in communication, making sure we were on the same page. I opted for delivery rather than pickup, and she made sure the rv was delivered early so we could fully enjoy the rental dates. We had a normal issue w the AC (the unit froze) but she was very communicative and helpful until the problem was solved (she suggested to turn it to fan in case the unit was frozen, and it quickly thawed). Always very sweet and courteous, always responsive. My four year old son loved the trailer, was very upset to understand that we had to give it back 😂. Thanks, Sandy!

Sandy went out of her way to make sure my family was well accommodated during our use of her camper!

How to book campgrounds near Carlisle Barracks
Pennsylvania state park sites at Pine Grove Furnace and Colonel Denning are booked through the state reservation system. Reservations can be made online through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation portal or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), Monday to Saturday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Most sites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival, and popular summer weekends often go early.
Private parks including Western Village RV Park Inc, Deer Run Campgrounds, King's Campground, Walmar Manor Campground, and Mountain Creek Camp Ground are booked directly with each operator by phone or through their websites. Book summer holiday weekends several months out, especially for pull-through and 50-amp sites, and confirm rig-length limits before arrival.
What to expect on the ground
The Cumberland Valley is farmland framed by low forested ridges, so most campgrounds sit on rolling terrain rather than dense mountain forest. Private parks near Carlisle tend to have level gravel or grass pads, full hookups on many sites, laundry, and family amenities like pools and playgrounds. State park sites are more rustic, with picnic tables and fire rings on every site and only some sites offering electric.
At Pine Grove Furnace, the Charcoal Hearth Campground offers modern electric, non-electric, and pet-friendly sites, along with a playground, sanitary dump station, amphitheater, firewood sales, and modern restrooms with warm showers. A seasonal camp store sits one quarter-mile from the campground. Colonel Denning offers restrooms with warm showers, a sanitary dump station, and pets are permitted on designated campsites.
Cell service is limited to nonexistent inside Michaux State Forest, including Pine Grove Furnace, and improves closer to Carlisle Barracks and I-81. Bring bug spray in early summer and firewood from a local source to comply with quarantine rules.
