Campgrounds and RV parks near Cheltenham Village, PA

Most itineraries center on Philadelphia: Independence National Historical Park, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Please Touch Museum, and the Philadelphia Zoo are all within a short drive of Cheltenham Village. Fairmount Park and the Wissahickon Valley offer trails, creek access, and picnic areas closer to the campgrounds north of the city. Across the river, families can pair a Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday stay with day trips to Camden's Adventure Aquarium and Battleship New Jersey. Washington Crossing State Park, NJ marks the site of General George Washington's Christmas-night crossing of the icy Delaware River, and the Pennsylvania side of the park adds historic buildings, museums, and river picnic spots. Lake Kandle offers supervised swimming at the lake, an activity pool, and an Olympic-size pool, which is useful on hot afternoons with kids.

The greater Philadelphia area has four distinct seasons. Summer is the peak camping window and also the hottest and most humid stretch, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Private parks fill fastest around Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends, so book those dates well in advance. Spring and fall are the most comfortable for touring the city and walking historic sites. Foliage in the Delaware Valley typically peaks in mid to late October. Several nearby private campgrounds are seasonal: Lake Kandle opens on the last Friday of April and closes on the first Sunday of October, so shoulder-season trips need to be timed carefully. Winter operations are limited. Washington Crossing State Park campgrounds on the New Jersey side are currently closed until further notice, and Pennsylvania state park campgrounds in the region generally scale back services after fall. Village Scene Park and the Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday operate year-round, which makes them the practical choices for cold-weather stays.

Expect a mix of suburban RV parks and traditional campgrounds rather than backcountry settings. Village Scene Park combines manufactured homes with RV sites in a mixed-use setup and operates year-round with 30/50 amp electrical service, water, and sewer at RV sites. Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday is a full-amenity park with a pool, cabins, and pull-through sites; reviewers note easy interstate access and proximity to Philadelphia. Lake Kandle is for RVs, motorhomes, or pop-ups only with no tent camping, and does not allow pets, so travelers with dogs should choose the KOA or Village Scene Park instead. State-park facilities at Washington Crossing State Park, NJ lean rustic when open. Group sites there feature fire rings, picnic tables, and composting toilets with no water or electric utilities on site, so campers must plan to bring their own water supply.
