Campground options within a short drive cover the full range: full-hookup private parks, a Pennsylvania state park campground, and a large fairgrounds. Hartman Center Campground in Milroy offers full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and a lodge on a former church retreat spread over more than 150 acres. Waterside Campground and RV Park sits along the Juniata River just outside Lewistown and stays open year-round.
For state-park camping, Greenwood Furnace State Park lies to the west along PA Route 305, backed by the 80,000-acre Rothrock State Forest. Seven Mountains Campground near Spring Mills and the Centre County Grange Fairgrounds in Centre Hall extend the options northward toward Penn State.

Rothrock State Forest surrounds the area with hiking, mountain biking, hunting, and trout streams. Greenwood Furnace State Park adds a six-acre lake stocked with trout, a swimming beach, a historic ironmaking village to tour, and access to the Standing Stone Trail and Mid State Trail systems.
Families typically build day trips around Penn's Cave and Wildlife Park, the Belleville Wednesday auction and Amish market, and Penn State's University Park campus. Waterside Campground and RV Park is set between the Juniata River and the historic Pennsylvania Canal, with river access for fishing and swimming, plus pontoon canal rides.

Central Pennsylvania has a four-season climate with warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The prime RV window runs from mid-April through mid-November, matching the operating season of most public campgrounds. Greenwood Furnace State Park's campground opens in mid-April and closes in mid-November, and many private parks follow a similar shoulder-season pattern.
Summer is peak season, with warm days ideal for lake swimming and long daylight hours; sites at Greenwood Furnace and popular private parks often sell out on weekends. Spring brings wildflowers and strong trout fishing but wet, muddy trails. Fall delivers cool nights, bright foliage through October, and heavy demand around Penn State home football weekends.
Winter camping is possible at year-round parks like Waterside Campground and RV Park, but expect snow, limited services, and the risk of frozen hookups. The Centre County Grange Fair runs in the last full week of August, filling Grange Park with roughly 1,500 RVs and drawing regional traffic.
How to book near Church Hill
Pennsylvania state park campsites, including Greenwood Furnace, are booked through the state's ReserveAmerica-powered system. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, and popular summer weekends fill quickly after the booking window opens. The maximum stay is 14 days during the summer season and 21 days in the off season, with a required 48-hour gap between stays.
Private parks in the area, including Hartman Center Campground, Seven Mountains Campground, and Waterside Campground and RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Penn State football weekends and Grange Fair week are the tightest dates: book several months ahead. The Centre County Grange Fairgrounds offers primitive overflow RV spaces during fair week on a first-come basis.
What to expect on the ground
Expect winding two-lane roads through ridge-and-valley terrain. US 322 is the main east-west route through the Seven Mountains and handles big rigs well; PA 305 to Greenwood Furnace is narrower and climbs through forest. Cell service is unpredictable inside state parks and along forest roads, so download maps before arriving.
Hookup levels vary. Hartman Center Campground offers full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service. Greenwood Furnace has 49 tent and trailer sites with electric on most, plus a dump station, showers, and flush toilets, but no individual water or sewer hookups at regular sites. Waterside Campground and RV Park provides full-hookup riverfront sites for rigs of any size.
Black bears live in the surrounding forests, so store food and trash securely. Firewood should be purchased locally to limit the spread of invasive pests.
