Camping near Coaldale, Pennsylvania
Coaldale sits in Schuylkill County at the southern edge of the Pocono Mountains, roughly between Tamaqua and Jim Thorpe. The town is surrounded by forested ridges, former anthracite coal country, and a network of private campgrounds and state parks that make it a practical base for RV travel in eastern Pennsylvania.
Most campers stay at private RV parks in the surrounding towns. Lakewood Park Campground in nearby Barnesville sits on a 10-acre lake and offers full-hookup RV sites plus cabins, Rosemount Camping Resort is a family park in the Tamaqua area, and Lizard Creek Campground rounds out the local options. To the east, Jim Thorpe Camping Resort and 100 Mile View Camping put travelers within minutes of the historic town of Jim Thorpe.
The region combines easy interstate access from I-81 and the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike with quick reach to Lehigh Gorge State Park, Hickory Run State Park, and the D&L Trail. It works well for families looking to mix hookup camping with river, rail-trail, and small-town day trips.
Things to do near Coaldale
Outdoor activity centers on the Lehigh River corridor. Lehigh Gorge State Park follows a deep river-carved gorge with more than 20 miles of the D&L Trail open to hiking and biking, plus whitewater rafting and trout fishing on the Lehigh. Hickory Run State Park, about a half hour from Jim Thorpe, features the well-known Boulder Field and a network of hiking trails rated from easy to difficult.
Closer in, campers use the Switchback Railroad Trail, Mauch Chunk Lake Park for swimming and paddling, and Locust Lake and Tuscarora state parks for boating and fishing.
Jim Thorpe itself is the main town draw. Families ride the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, tour the Asa Packer Mansion and Old Jail Museum, rent bikes, or book guided whitewater trips. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, a short drive from the Tamaqua-area campgrounds, is a well-known raptor migration site.

Most private campgrounds around Coaldale run a seasonal calendar. Jim Thorpe Camping Resort operates from April 1 through October 31, while Lakewood Park Campground keeps its cabins available year-round. Lehigh Gorge State Park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset but has no reservable facilities on site. Plan on an April to October window for full hookups, pools, and camp stores at most parks.
Summer is peak. Sites fill on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, driven by rafting, tubing, and family travel to Jim Thorpe. Reservations are strongly recommended for summer weekends and again during fall foliage, when the gorge draws heavy day-use traffic.
Spring brings variable weather and high, cold water on the Lehigh, which is good for whitewater releases but chilly for swimming. Fall color typically peaks in mid-October. Winter is quiet: snow and ice can limit trail and road access in the gorge, and most private parks close for the season, though a handful of sites in the region remain open for self-contained rigs and cabin stays.

Great weekend getaway!
Kami A. - Nov 2024
Great vehicle and friendly owners. This compact camper has a lot of creature comforts while allowing one to maneuver and park in regular parking lots. The van is really easy to drive and handles really nice. The beds were comfortable and IMO accommodate 2 adults (top bed) and 1 adult or 2 kids in the lower bed. We were able to use the bike rack, too, and that worked great for a road bike and mountain bike (I think 2 mountain bikes might not fit unless the handle bars were turned on 1 of them). We didn't use the, generator, heater, hot water, shower, sink, microwave or toilet so I can't comment on them but I wish we rented it longer so we could've taken advantage of all this van has to offer. We would absolutely rent again.

How to book campgrounds
Private campgrounds around Coaldale each run their own reservation systems. Jim Thorpe Camping Resort, Rosemount Camping Resort, and 100 Mile View Camping take reservations directly through their websites and phone lines, while Lakewood Park Campground and Lizard Creek Campground handle bookings in-house. Lakewood accepts RV, tent, and standard cabin reservations up to 365 days in advance. For summer holiday weekends, plan to reserve several months out.
Lehigh Gorge State Park does not have reservable campsites of its own. Nearby state park campgrounds, including Hickory Run and Locust Lake, are reserved through the Pennsylvania DCNR system on ReserveAmerica, which opens bookings 11 months in advance to noon on the day of arrival. Peak state park dates, particularly fall foliage weekends, sell out early, so it helps to book at the 11-month mark or set a cancellation alert.
What to expect at Coaldale campgrounds
Terrain around Coaldale is hilly and forested, with elevations climbing from around 400 feet in the river valleys to about 1,800 feet on the ridges. Most private campgrounds offer 30- and 50-amp full hookup sites, fire rings, picnic tables, bathhouses, and camp stores, with cabin and tent options mixed in. Site spacing varies: some parks near Jim Thorpe are known for tighter sites where slide-outs and awnings can be a squeeze, and Jim Thorpe Camping Resort notes it cannot accommodate rigs over 36 feet, so confirm site dimensions when booking a larger rig.
Cell service is unpredictable through the gorge and on back roads, so download park maps and directions before arrival. Black bears, whitetail deer, and turkeys are common, and standard food storage rules apply. Quiet hours vary by park, and pets are generally allowed on leash.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Coaldale,%20PennsylvaniaWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Coaldale, PA?

Pennsylvania only requires a Non-Commercial Class B license for single vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating over 26,000 pounds, and a Class A for combinations towing over 10,000 pounds, which is above the size of most rentals on RVezy. The vast majority of Class C motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers fall under that threshold. You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Coaldale includes an RVezy renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out on U.S. Route 209 toward Jim Thorpe knowing help is one call away. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle, and during checkout you choose the coverage level that matches your comfort, from standard up to premium options with lower deductibles. It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it gives renters real financial peace of mind, especially on first trips. Hosts cannot change the coverage you select. That way, your only job is enjoying the Panther Creek Valley scenery.

Booking is low-risk. RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy across every motorhome rental in Coaldale, which means you get a consistent, transparent process no matter which RV you choose. There's a money-back grace period after booking, and refund options scale with how far out you are from your trip start date. Special circumstances, including major weather events like winter storms across the Pocono Plateau, are also considered. The full cancellation terms are explained clearly on RVezy before you confirm payment, so you can review them and then book your Coaldale RV trip with confidence.

Lehigh Gorge State Park welcomes leashed dogs along the D&L Trail, perfect for a long sniff walk. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm any pet fee, and bring your dog's vaccination records for state park stays.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/HickoryRunStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Coaldale?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip. Many hosts offering RV delivery in Coaldale will drive the RV directly to your campsite at Hickory Run State Park, Mauch Chunk Lake Park, or even your driveway in Lansford or Tamaqua, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. That's a game changer if it's your first time renting an RV or if you'd rather skip backing a 30-foot rig into a tight Pocono campsite. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and message hosts to confirm distance fees. Pro tip: stationary delivery to a state park is often the most affordable option and gets you camping faster.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Coaldale,%20PennsylvaniaHow does mileage work, and how far can I realistically drive from Coaldale?

Pro tip: estimate your route in advance, then ask the host to quote a flat mileage add-on, it's often cheaper than paying per mile at trip end.

Pro tip: Hickory Run's modern campground season generally runs from the second Friday in April through mid-to-late October, so book early for foliage weekends.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/HickoryRunStatePark/Pages/Camping.aspxWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Coaldale, PA?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot. Coaldale sits at roughly 1,000 feet of elevation in the southern Anthracite region, so summers are warm (highs typically in the upper 70s to mid 80s) and winters are cold and snowy (lows in the teens and 20s with substantial annual snow). May and June bring wildflowers and rushing waterfalls in nearby Lehigh Gorge, July and August are prime for swimming at Mauch Chunk Lake, and late September through mid-October delivers some of Pennsylvania's most spectacular fall foliage along U.S. 209. Insider tip: time your Coaldale RV trip with the Coal Miner's Heritage Festival at the No. 9 Coal Mine in September for a one-of-a-kind local experience.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Can I really do this?
Yes, and Coaldale is a friendly place to start. If it's your first time renting an RV, your host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, water, waste tanks, and the generator, plus you can text or call them throughout your trip. Stick to a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan for easy handling on U.S. 209 and the winding climb toward Nesquehoning. Pro tip: choose stationary delivery to Hickory Run State Park for your first night, that way the RV is already parked and set up, and you can focus on enjoying it instead of backing into a site.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV on the road?
You're never alone out there. Every RVezy rental in Coaldale includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, mechanical breakdowns, and towing. If something stops you on U.S. 209 between Tamaqua and Lansford, or up in the Poconos near Hickory Run, one phone call sends help. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, most are local to the Panther Valley and know exactly which mechanics and tire shops will get you back on the road fast. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the most popular RV road trips from Coaldale?
You've got incredible routes within easy reach. Top RV road trips from Coaldale include the Pocono Mountains loop through Jim Thorpe, Hickory Run, and Lake Harmony (about 60 miles round trip, perfect for a weekend), the Delaware Water Gap and Bushkill Falls run (around 110 miles round trip with stunning river views), a foliage tour through Lehigh Gorge and Ricketts Glen State Park (great in October), and a coal-country heritage drive through Pottsville, Ashland's Pioneer Tunnel, and the Centralia area (around 90 miles round trip). Note: cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed by some hosts, but RV travel into Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals.
visitpa.com/regions/pocono-mountainsWhat should I budget for fuel on a Coaldale RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes, and around Coaldale you'll find stations along U.S. 209 in Tamaqua and Lansford, plus larger truck-friendly stations off I-81 near Hazleton. Realistic fuel economy: Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A rigs 6 to 10 mpg. For a 3-day Pocono loop covering about 200 miles in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel depending on current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Hazleton before heading to remote stretches near Hickory Run, prices climb noticeably at smaller stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Coaldale?
The earlier the better, especially for summer and fall foliage weekends. Pennsylvania State Parks like Hickory Run and nearby Tuscarora open reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official DCNR reservation system, and the most popular sites for July, August, and October weekends often book quickly after opening. Private campgrounds like Don Laine and Jim Thorpe Camping Resort generally have more last-minute flexibility but still fill on holiday weekends. Pro tip: for a spontaneous Coaldale RV trip, aim for a Sunday through Wednesday stay and target shoulder season (May or late September), you'll often find sites available the same week.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Coaldale?
Coaldale driving is very manageable, even for newer RVers. U.S. Route 209 is the main artery through town and runs through the Panther Creek Valley, with steady grades over the ridges between Coaldale and Nesquehoning, use lower gears on the descents. I-81 and the PA Turnpike Northeast Extension (I-476) are both within a short drive and handle large RVs comfortably. Winter brings snow and ice on mountain roads, so November through March travel calls for extra caution. The historic streets in nearby Jim Thorpe are narrow and steep, park your RV at a designated lot and walk into town. Local tip: avoid the Flagstaff Road shortcut in a big rig.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Coaldale?
You'll find solid infrastructure for RV camping in Coaldale and the surrounding Carbon and Schuylkill counties. Hickory Run State Park offers electric hookups (20, 30, and 50 amp on many sites), a sanitary dump station, modern restrooms with warm showers, and a camp store with firewood and ice. Mauch Chunk Lake Park has electric sites and a swim beach, while private parks like Don Laine include full hookups, a pool, and Wi-Fi. Most state-park water systems close in mid-to-late October when lines are winterized, so fall and winter campers should plan to dump and fill at private parks. Bonus: Hickory Run is in black bear country, follow posted food storage guidance closely.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/HickoryRunStatePark/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs available for rent in Coaldale?

Many include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator for boondocking. Some hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor grills, and bike racks as add-ons. Pro tip: filter listings by Sleeps count and message the host to confirm bed configurations, families touring Jim Thorpe and Lehigh Gorge often love a bunkhouse Class C for the extra kid space.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Coaldale,%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my Coaldale RV rental?
Hosts in the Coaldale area offer a great mix of extras to make your trip smoother. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some hosts offer flat-rate weekly mileage bundles. Pro tip: bundle delivery, generator use, and a kitchen kit into one quote when messaging the host, many will discount the package for multi-day Pocono trips.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Coaldale,%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully online. When you book an RV rental in Coaldale, you pay through the secure RVezy platform using a credit or debit card, no cash and no e-transfers to hosts. A refundable security deposit is held separately (amounts vary by RV) and released after your trip ends, assuming the RV is returned clean, undamaged, and on time. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fuel and dump-tank instructions, and communicate any small issues through the app right away. Pro tip: budget for the deposit hold separately from your rental cost so your card has plenty of room for fuel and campground fees during your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Coaldale during the winter months?
Yes, winter RV camping in Coaldale is an underrated adventure. While most state park campgrounds switch to limited or rustic mode after mid-to-late October (Hickory Run's water systems close for the season), several private parks stay open year-round, and many RVezy hosts offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable furnaces. Winter temperatures can drop into the teens with significant annual snowfall, so look for listings that mention winter-ready features and shore-power readiness. Pro tip: pair a winterized motorhome rental in Coaldale with cross-country skiing at Hickory Run or a snowy stroll through historic Jim Thorpe, it's magical and far less crowded than summer.
