Campgrounds and RV parks near Dalton, PA

Most trip planning revolves around Lackawanna Lake. The 198-acre Lackawanna Lake is surrounded by picnic areas and multi-use trails winding through forest. Boating, camping, fishing, mountain biking, and swimming are popular recreation activities. The park pool is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, a useful anchor for families with kids. Beyond the state park, day trips reach Scranton for the Steamtown National Historic Site, the Electric City Trolley Museum, and Nay Aug Park. The Lackawanna River corridor offers fishing access, and the surrounding Endless Mountains region has additional hiking, farm stands, and small-town main streets within a short drive of any RV site near Dalton.

The main RV camping window is dictated by the state park calendar. The campground opens the second Friday in April and closes October 14. The maximum camping period is 14 consecutive days in the summer season and 21 consecutive days in the off-season. Private campgrounds in the area generally follow a similar April to October pattern, though some offer shoulder-season stays for self-contained rigs. Summer is the peak, with warm days, lake swimming, and full programming. Weekends and holidays around July 4 and Labor Day book earliest, so families targeting those dates should reserve well in advance. Fall brings cooler nights and hardwood color through October, and is generally quieter mid-week. Winter is cold and snowy in northeastern Pennsylvania, and campground loops are closed. The campground at Lackawanna State Park is undergoing a major shower house renovation project. During this time, portions of the campground will be temporarily closed while other areas remain open as work is completed in phases. DCNR is replacing outdated shower and restroom facilities with new, modern, and accessible amenities. Check site status before locking in dates.

At Lackawanna State Park, options include traditional tent sites, RV sites with electric hookups, cabins, and yurts. The RV sites are paved, though some campers note they may not be perfectly level, and the campground features wooded loops with varying degrees of privacy. Modern restrooms with showers and flush toilets are provided for convenience. A sanitary dump station is near the campground entrance. Plan water and waste around the dump station. Firewood rules matter here. Bringing firewood into Pennsylvania is prohibited and could result in a citation, and to help protect the forest from invasive insects such as the emerald ash borer, campers should not transport firewood over long distances and should use local firewood instead. Cell service can be spotty, so download maps before arrival.
