Campgrounds near Dorneyville, Pennsylvania
Dorneyville sits in Lehigh County just west of Allentown, in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley. It is best known as the home of Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom, and it works as a practical base for RV trips that mix theme-park days with hiking, fishing, and Pocono side trips. The surrounding countryside is a mix of rolling farmland, wooded ridges along Blue Mountain, and creek valleys that host most of the region's private campgrounds.
RV renters typically choose between full-hookup family parks and quieter creekside sites within a short drive. Allentown KOA Journey in New Tripoli is the closest KOA, a roughly 20 to 25 minute drive from Dorney Park, and offers full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and tent sites along a stream. Quaker Woods Campground sits to the south near Quakertown, while Moyers Lake and Campground, Boulder Woods Campground, and Homestead Family Campgrounds round out the nearby private options.
Pennsylvania state parks such as Hickory Run and Nockamixon are within reach for renters who want larger natural settings and reservable sites through the state system.
Things to do near Dorneyville
Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom is the anchor attraction, with roller coasters and Wildwater Kingdom's wave pools operating from May through October. Families often pair a park day with the Crayola Experience in Easton, the Lehigh Valley Zoo in Schnecksville, and Cabela's off Route 22 in Hamburg.
Outdoor options are close at hand. The Appalachian Trail crosses Blue Mountain to the north, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary near Kempton is known for autumn raptor migration, and Trexler Nature Preserve offers trails and a bison and elk range. Paddlers head to the Lehigh and Delaware rivers for canoeing, kayaking, and rafting, and Beltzville State Park near Lehighton is a common stop for swimming and boat launches.
Rainy-day backups include Crystal Cave in Kutztown, the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway in Jim Thorpe, and outlet shopping in Tannersville.

The private campgrounds around Dorneyville generally operate from April through October, while a handful of state park facilities in the region stay open year round. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, driven by Dorney Park's operating season and school summer breaks. Weekends in July and August often sell out weeks in advance, and holiday weekends fill even earlier.
Late spring brings mild days, higher creek levels, and fewer crowds, though nights remain cool into May. Summer is warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so RV renters should plan for storm-hardy setups and check for flood advisories along creekside sites.
Fall is a strong shoulder season. Foliage typically peaks in mid to late October across the Lehigh Valley and Poconos, and Hawk Mountain's raptor count draws birders from September onward. Winter camping options are limited: heavy snow, ice storms, and Nor'easters are common, and most private parks close by the end of October and reopen in April.

Great weekend getaway!
Kami A. - Nov 2024
Great vehicle and friendly owners. This compact camper has a lot of creature comforts while allowing one to maneuver and park in regular parking lots. The van is really easy to drive and handles really nice. The beds were comfortable and IMO accommodate 2 adults (top bed) and 1 adult or 2 kids in the lower bed. We were able to use the bike rack, too, and that worked great for a road bike and mountain bike (I think 2 mountain bikes might not fit unless the handle bars were turned on 1 of them). We didn't use the, generator, heater, hot water, shower, sink, microwave or toilet so I can't comment on them but I wish we rented it longer so we could've taken advantage of all this van has to offer. We would absolutely rent again.

How to book a campground near Dorneyville
Pennsylvania state parks accept reservations up to eleven months in advance through the state's official reservation system, with new inventory releasing at noon Eastern Time. That window is the practical target for prime summer weekends and October foliage stays at parks like Hickory Run and Nockamixon, and setting a calendar reminder for the eleven-month mark is standard practice for popular sites.
Most private campgrounds in the area, including Allentown KOA Journey, Quaker Woods Campground, Boulder Woods Campground, Moyers Lake and Campground, and Homestead Family Campgrounds, accept bookings through their own websites, with KOA taking reservations on koa.com. Summer weekends near Dorney Park fill quickly, so RV renters should confirm site length, hookup type, and pet policy before booking, and message the host on the rental platform to align pickup timing with campground check-in windows.
What to expect
Terrain around Dorneyville is gently rolling, with campgrounds set along creeks, ponds, and wooded ridges. Access roads to private parks are generally paved and manageable for larger rigs, though some interior loops are gravel and tight around mature trees, so slide clearances and low-hanging branches are worth checking on arrival.
Full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service are available at Allentown KOA Journey and similar family parks, though some KOA sites are water and electric only with a central dump station, and smaller campgrounds may follow the same pattern. Cell service is generally reliable near Allentown and thins out toward Blue Mountain and the Poconos.
Expect mosquitoes and ticks in wooded and creekside sites from May through September, black bear activity in the ridges to the north, and thunderstorms that can move in quickly on summer afternoons.
