Water recreation drives most trips. At Lackawanna State Park, boating, camping, fishing, mountain biking, and swimming are popular recreation activities. Frances Slocum Lake permits electric-motor boating on its 165-acre lake, and the park swimming pool is open daily from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. On land, both state parks offer trail systems. At Frances Slocum, visitors can explore woodlands, wetlands, marshes, open fields and nearly 14 miles of hiking trails. Lackawanna adds multi-use trails shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. For a bigger day trip, the Lehigh Gorge Trail follows the Lehigh River for biking and whitewater boating. Scranton and Wilkes-Barre add museums, minor-league baseball, and casual family attractions on rainy days.

Late spring and early summer bring reliable trail conditions and cool nights. July and August are peak season, when weekend sites at both state parks fill well in advance.
