Campgrounds near Earlston
Earlston is a small community in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, set in the Ridge and Valley region of the southern Alleghenies. The area sits along the US 30 corridor between Bedford and Breezewood, putting RV renters within a short drive of both private campgrounds and one of the state's most popular lake parks. Camping near this part of Bedford County includes a mix of state parks, private campgrounds, and recreational areas in the Appalachian foothills, with most options situated within 30 miles of the Bedford area.
Nearby private options include Brush Creek Campground and Breezewood Proving Grounds on the eastern side toward Breezewood, plus Friendship Village Campground and RV Park closer to Bedford. Choice Camping Court and Natures Getaway RV Park and Campground round out the local roster and serve travelers looking for full-hookup or basic sites within a short drive.
Shawnee State Park covers 3,983 acres of Pennsylvania's Ridge and Valley Province, sits ten miles west of the historic town of Bedford along US 30, and centers on the 451-acre Shawnee Lake, giving RV renters a public-land alternative with modern facilities.
Things to do near Earlston
Shawnee Lake, a 451-acre reservoir inside Shawnee State Park, is the main draw for swimming, kayaking, and pontoon days. Trails inside the park and adjacent state game lands add hiking and mountain biking for families basing their trip out of an RV.
Blue Knob State Park, the area's big mountain park, covers 6,128 acres of woodland and includes 18 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. Because it sits on Pennsylvania's second-highest mountain, temperatures run several degrees cooler than surrounding valleys, so it works well as a cooler-elevation day trip during summer heat.
Closer to camp, Friendship Village Campground and RV Park runs on-site amenities that keep kids busy, including a fishing pond. Historic Bedford, the Flight 93 National Memorial to the west, and the Sideling Hill area to the east round out easy half-day excursions.

Most campgrounds in the Bedford area operate seasonally, with peak season running April through October. Several private facilities remain open year-round though with limited services during winter months. That pattern shapes almost every trip decision in the region.
Spring brings unsettled weather and higher rainfall, but trails green up quickly and lake water warms by late May. Summer is the busiest window, when Shawnee Lake and family-oriented private parks fill on weekends and holidays. Mountain campgrounds at Blue Knob sit at higher elevation and typically run several degrees cooler than valley locations, which is worth factoring in when booking in July and August.
Fall delivers the strongest color show, typically peaking in early to mid October, with cool nights and dry afternoons. Winter camping is possible at a few private parks, but expect closed bathhouses, drained water lines, and limited hookups at the state park campgrounds during the coldest months.
How to book a campsite near Earlston
Public sites at Shawnee State Park are handled through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. Summer weekends and fall-foliage weekends book out early, so opening the 11-month window on the target date is the safest approach.
Private campgrounds including Friendship Village Campground and RV Park, Brush Creek Campground, Breezewood Proving Grounds, Choice Camping Court, and Natures Getaway RV Park and Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Holiday weekends require the longest lead time.
State park permit rules limit sites to one family unit or five unrelated persons per campsite, require at least one occupant 18 or older, and enforce quiet hours. Check length limits before booking a larger Class A rental, as some Shawnee sites have shorter vehicle length caps.
What to expect on arrival
Site styles vary widely between the local options. Private parks in the area typically offer level gravel or grass sites with 30 and 50 amp service, full hookups, and dump stations, while state park loops lean toward electric-only or non-electric sites with a central dump station.
Cell coverage is inconsistent once you leave the US 30 and I-70/I-76 corridor, and mountain hollows around Blue Knob can drop signal entirely. Download offline maps before arrival. Bears and deer are active in the surrounding woodlands, so food storage discipline matters.
Established campgrounds tend to fill on summer weekends, so arriving before the office closes avoids a late check-in scramble. Firewood should be bought locally, since Pennsylvania rules discourage moving untreated wood into and around the state to help limit the spread of spotted lanternfly and emerald ash borer.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Earlston, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Earlston, PA?
RV rental in Earlston is one of the most affordable ways to explore Bedford County and the Raystown Branch Juniata River valley. On RVezy, travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $295, and larger Class A coaches can reach around $325 nightly. Booking midweek (Sunday through Thursday) and traveling in late April, May, or October usually unlocks the cheapest RV rental Earlston has to offer, since rates climb during the Bedford Fall Foliage Festival in early October. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy and skip towing fees altogether by having the host drop the rig at Shawnee State Park or Friendship Village Campground.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Earlston,PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Earlston, PA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Earlston for almost every rig on RVezy. Pennsylvania only requires a Non Commercial Class B license when a single motorhome exceeds 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and virtually every campervan, Class C, travel trailer, and fifth wheel listed on the platform sits well under that limit. RVezy approved drivers must be 25 or older with a valid license, and ID verification happens right inside the booking flow. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before flying in and you're ready to roll into Bedford County.

Every RV rental in Earlston booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you can cross the Juniata River into Everett with real peace of mind. The plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level (Standard, Plus, or Premium) during checkout, not the host. It provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on a backroad near Bedford. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Earlston RV rental?
You can book your Earlston RV rental with confidence because RVezy (not the host) sets and manages the cancellation policy, and there's a money-back grace period built in for newly confirmed trips. Refund eligibility depends on how far out you cancel before your trip start date. Bedford County sees occasional summer thunderstorms and the rare winter ice event off Tussey Mountain, and if a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit. Need to change plans? Reach out to RVezy support through the Help Center and they'll walk you through your options before your Bedford getaway starts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Earlston, PA?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Earlston options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet Friendly filter and you'll see campervans, Class Cs, and travel trailers whose hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Once you arrive, Shawnee State Park allows leashed pets in designated pet-friendly campsites in the modern campground, and Friendship Village Campground welcomes pets at most sites. Tenley Park in nearby Everett has open green space and walking paths perfect for stretching paws after a travel day. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any size or breed preferences for your pup.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/shawnee-state-park/stay.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Earlston?
Yes, RV delivery in Earlston is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to Shawnee State Park, Friendship Village Campground, or a private driveway in Everett or Bedford, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Just filter for Delivery on RVezy and check each host's delivery radius and fee (often a flat fee or a per-mile rate from their home base). It's the easiest way to skip towing stress and dive straight into your Bedford County campfire night.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106514-Delivery-options-from-your-hostHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive from Earlston?
Most Earlston hosts include a daily mileage allowance (often around 100 to 150 free miles per day), and some advertise RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for a longer Pennsylvania RV trip. Additional miles are charged at a per-mile rate set by the host. To put it in perspective, Raystown Lake is about 25 miles north, Ohiopyle State Park and the Laurel Highlands are roughly 75 miles west, Gettysburg is about 90 miles east, Pittsburgh is around 120 miles west, and Washington D.C. is about 165 miles southeast. Plan your loop before booking and you'll easily stay inside the included miles, leaving more budget for ice cream stops in downtown Bedford.

pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/shawnee-state-park/stay.htmlWhen is the best time to take an Earlston RV trip?
Late April through late October is the sweet spot for an Earlston RV trip, with each season offering something different. May and June bring lush green ridges and daytime highs in the 70s, perfect for paddling Shawnee Lake. July and August are warm and humid (mid 80s) and pair beautifully with river tubing on the Juniata. The real local favorite is late September into the second weekend of October, when the Bedford Fall Foliage Festival lights up downtown and the Allegheny ridges blaze orange and red. Winters get cold (often 20s to 30s with snow), so look for four-season rigs if you're chasing a quiet, snowy escape.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Earlston?
You'll do great, and first time renting an RV around Earlston is genuinely one of the easier places to learn. Roads here are rural and lightly trafficked, with US 30 and US 220 offering wide lanes and gentle grades through the Ridge and Valley region. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering propane, slides, water systems, and dump procedures, and they're a text away during your trip. Stick with a Class C or smaller travel trailer for your first rental, take the scenic Lincoln Highway (US 30) west toward Schellsburg, and you'll feel confident by lunchtime. Pro tip: practice a few turns in a quiet lot before heading to the campground.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on US 30 or a battery issue at Shawnee State Park is just a phone call away. Your host is also a direct text or call away to walk you through anything quirky about their specific rig, and the RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Bedford County has reliable cell coverage along the main corridors, with a few quiet patches in the Buchanan State Forest, so download offline maps before you head into the hills.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Earlston, PA?
An RV road trip from Earlston puts you within easy reach of some of the Mid-Atlantic's best scenery. Head about 25 miles north to Raystown Lake for 8,300 acres of houseboating-worthy water. Drive 75 miles west on US 30 to Ohiopyle State Park and the Youghiogheny River for whitewater and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. Push 90 miles east to Gettysburg National Military Park, or loop about 120 miles into Pittsburgh's incline-and-rivers cityscape. Crossing into Maryland is welcome (Rocky Gap State Park is just 40 miles south). If you're planning to cross into Canada, message the host first to confirm their insurance allows it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an Earlston RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost on any RV rental Pennsylvania trip, but the math is friendly around Earlston. Travel trailers towed by a gas pickup average 10 to 13 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes return 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A diesels usually run 7 to 10 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices typically sit a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes, so filling up just over the Maryland border on a southern leg toward Cumberland can mean noticeable savings. There's a Sheetz right in Everett, less than two miles from Earlston, that's reliably one of the most affordable fuel stops in Bedford County.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Earlston?
For the best campgrounds near Earlston, plan to reserve 3 to 6 months out for any summer weekend or fall foliage trip. Pennsylvania State Parks take reservations up to 11 months in advance through their reservation system, and prime lakeside sites at Shawnee State Park vanish quickly once spring hits. Friendship Village and Hidden Springs both book up fast for July 4th, Bedford County Fair week, and the Fall Foliage Festival in early October. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have openings even in peak season, and many state park summer weekends require a two-night minimum.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Earlston?
Driving around Earlston is refreshingly low-stress compared to most metro RV trips. You're on the Lincoln Highway (US 30) corridor with two-lane and four-lane stretches, gentle Allegheny ridge climbs, and very little traffic outside of festival weekends. The PA Turnpike (I-76) runs just north of town if you want to cover ground fast. Watch for whitetail deer at dawn and dusk (Bedford County has one of the densest deer populations in the state), and take it slow on the curvy sections of PA 96 over Tussey Mountain. Winter brings snow and occasional black ice, so most travelers stick to April through November for stress-free cruising.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Earlston?
Campgrounds near Earlston are well-equipped for any rig you rent. Shawnee State Park offers electric sites, a sanitary dump station, hot showers, and flush toilets. Friendship Village adds full-hookup pull-through sites, pools, propane refills, and a camp store. Hidden Springs and other nearby private parks have clean shower houses and dump stations too. Pro tip: top off propane in Bedford before heading into the state forest, where services thin out quickly.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/shawnee-state-park/stay.htmlWhat amenities come standard in an Earlston RV rental?
Most RV rentals in Earlston come ready for a full family trip out of the box. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa sleepers, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, and a furnace for chilly Allegheny nights. Class C and Class A motorhomes include seatbelted travel seats for everyone on board, and many hosts add a generator, outdoor speakers, or a TV. Wi-Fi hotspots and pet kits are popular add-ons. Check the Amenities list on each listing or message the host to confirm what's included before your Bedford County trip.

Pickup is usually at the host's home in Earlston, Everett, or Bedford in the early afternoon, with returns by late morning, though many hosts will flex on timing for a small fee. Many hosts allow well-behaved pets for a small nightly fee. Filter for Instant Book on RVezy if you want to lock in your motorhome rental Earlston without waiting for host approval.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Earlston,PennsylvaniaHow does the security deposit and payment work?
Payment for your Earlston RV rental happens securely through RVezy, never in cash to the host. You'll pay a portion at booking and the balance closer to the trip, all on your credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit (the amount varies by RV and your chosen protection level) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and is held separately from the booking payment. As long as you return the RV on time, clean, with the fuel and tanks as agreed, the hold is released after the trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the rig at pickup and return to keep everything smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Earlston during winter?
Yes, winter RV rental in Earlston is absolutely an option, and it can be magical. Bedford County winters bring crisp 20s-to-30s days and occasional snow that frosts the Allegheny ridges beautifully. Look for four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and strong furnaces, and confirm with the host that the RV is winterized for sub-freezing use. Some private campgrounds in the area stay open year-round with limited winter services and shore power to keep things toasty. Pack tank heaters or RV antifreeze for the gray and black tanks, and you'll have a quiet, gorgeous Pennsylvania escape almost entirely to yourself. Message hosts directly to find winter-ready listings.
