Campgrounds near Emporium, Pennsylvania
Emporium sits in Cameron County in the north-central Pennsylvania Wilds, a region defined by steep forested ridges, narrow creek valleys, and some of the largest blocks of public land in the state. RV renters use the town as a base for two nearby state park campgrounds and several private options, all set in or beside Elk State Forest.
The closest overnight option is Sizerville State Park, a 386-acre park about six miles north of Emporium on PA 155 in Cameron and Potter counties. Sinnemahoning State Park lies farther south on PA 872, a 1,910-acre park in the same two-county area with a 145-acre reservoir at its southern end. Austin Campground sits between the two parks, while Riverview Campsites and Elk Crossing 555 Campground offer additional creekside and elk-country stays.
Cell service is unreliable across the region. Coverage begins to drop roughly 45 minutes from Sinnemahoning, so drivers should download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving pavement.
Things to do near Emporium
Wildlife viewing anchors most trips. Sinnemahoning State Park is home to a growing elk herd, with an ADA-accessible wildlife viewing platform at the northern end of the park and elk frequently visible in surrounding meadows during the fall rut in September and October. Bald eagles nest near the George B. Stevenson Reservoir at the southern end, and bobcats and coyotes are also present.
The 145-acre reservoir supports fishing and boating, and the First Fork Sinnemahoning Creek is a well-known fly-fishing stretch for brook and brown trout. Hiking is available on about five miles of trails inside each state park, and the Wildlife Center at Sinnemahoning offers interactive interpretive exhibits geared to families. Sizerville also has a concrete swimming pool open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day.

The two nearby state park campgrounds run a similar shoulder-to-shoulder season. Sizerville opens the second Friday in April and closes in mid-December, and Sinnemahoning opens the second weekend in April and closes in late December, so winter RV camping inside these parks is generally not available. Day-use areas stay open year-round.
Summer draws the strongest demand, particularly on weekends, because the campgrounds are small: Sizerville has 23 sites and Sinnemahoning has 35. Book early for July and August. Fall is a distinct second peak driven by elk viewing, with the rut running September into October and foliage color usually best in early to mid-October. Elk are wild animals and can be aggressive, so keep distance and use viewing platforms.
Winter brings snow, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling on regional trails, and ice fishing on the Stevenson Reservoir, but overnight RV stays generally shift to private campgrounds that operate outside the state park season.
How to book
Sites at Sizerville State Park and Sinnemahoning State Park are reserved through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, run on ReserveAmerica, or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757) from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, and pavilions and some facilities require booking at least three days ahead of arrival.
Maximum stay at both parks is 14 days during the summer season and 21 days in the off-season, with a required 48-hour break before returning. One family unit or up to five unrelated persons is allowed per site.
Private options such as Austin Campground, Riverview Campsites, and Elk Crossing 555 Campground book directly with each operator. Reserve fall weekends well ahead because elk-viewing traffic fills the region quickly.
What to expect on site
Both state park campgrounds are small and quiet by design. Sizerville has 23 sites, with 18 offering electric hookups, plus five walk-in tent sites along the stream, flush toilets, hot showers, and a sanitary dump station. Sinnemahoning offers 35 sites with 30- and 50-amp electric hookups on most sites, a modern washhouse with flush toilets and hot showers, a dump station, and an amphitheater used for interpretive programs.
Roads through the region are narrow and winding, and Sinnemahoning is a long, linear park with a single road running end to end. Large rigs should plan turns carefully. Alcohol is prohibited in Pennsylvania state parks, and quiet hours run 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
