Campgrounds near Espy, Pennsylvania
Espy sits along the north bank of the Susquehanna River in Columbia County, just east of Bloomsburg. The village makes a practical base for RV travelers exploring central Pennsylvania's ridge-and-valley country, with quick access to Interstate 80 at the Buckhorn and Lightstreet exits and a cluster of private campgrounds within a short drive.
Campgrounds near Bloomsburg occupy the ridge and valley terrain of the central Appalachians, with elevations ranging from roughly 500 to 1,500 feet above sea level. Options close to Espy include Indian Head Campground along the Susquehanna at the mouth of Fishing Creek, Deihls Camping Resort, Springbrook Family Campground, and J and D Campgrounds. To the south in Elysburg, Knoebels Lake Glory Campground serves families visiting the adjacent amusement park.
For public land, Ricketts Glen State Park lies roughly 30 miles north. Ricketts Glen State Park is one of the most scenic areas in Pennsylvania, comprised of 13,193 acres in Luzerne, Sullivan, and Columbia counties, and harbors the Glens Natural Area, a National Natural Landmark.
Things to do near Espy
The Susquehanna River is the local anchor for paddling and fishing, with put-ins along the north branch and easy floats past the Espy and Bloomsburg riverfront. Downtown Bloomsburg adds a walkable core with the Children's Museum, university events, and the Bloomsburg Fair each fall.
Ricketts Glen is the marquee day trip. The park offers some of the best hiking in Pennsylvania, especially for waterfalls and old-growth forest, features 24 named waterfalls connected by miles of trails, and other popular activities include horseback riding, fishing, and boating on Lake Jean. Families traveling with kids often pair a campground stay with a day at Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg, which offers free admission and pay-per-ride tickets.

The area sees typical northeastern seasonal patterns with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Most private campgrounds around Espy run a spring-through-fall season. Indian Head Campground is open May 1 to October 31, and other private parks around Bloomsburg follow similar schedules, so shoulder-season travelers should confirm dates before arrival.
Summer is peak season for family sites and river access, but fall drives the biggest booking crunch. Foliage traffic builds from late September through mid-October, creating competition for reservations at the most sought-after sites. The Bloomsburg Fair runs September 25 through October 3 in 2026 and pulls heavy regional traffic that fills nearby campgrounds well in advance.
Winter narrows the options sharply at public land. There are 120 tent and trailer campsites at Ricketts Glen; the majority of the campground opens in April and closes in December, and a small number of sites remain open year round for winter camping. Every winter the Falls Trail closes due to ice and hazardous conditions on the trail.

How to book campgrounds near Espy
Private campgrounds near Espy, including Indian Head Campground, Deihls Camping Resort, Springbrook Family Campground, and J and D Campgrounds, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Knoebels Lake Glory Campground books through the Knoebels resort system and fills quickly for summer weekends and Halloween events.
For Pennsylvania state parks such as Ricketts Glen, use the state reservation system. Make online reservations for day use and overnight facilities or call toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. For summer holiday weekends and fall foliage dates, book as far ahead as the window allows.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Espy is a mix of river bottom and rolling farmland, with steeper climbs starting a few miles north toward the Endless Mountains. Sites at valley-floor campgrounds are generally level and easy for larger rigs, while state-park loops in the hills can be tighter. Campsite leveling can be an issue at several locations, and visitors frequently mention the need for blocks or leveling equipment.
RVers headed to Ricketts Glen should plan the approach carefully. The campground sits within a large state park, accessible via a steep two-mile climb on an 18% grade that challenges larger RVs, and divides into two distinct areas: a large loop positioned on a peninsula in Lake Jean, and a smaller loop offering full hookups for RVs up to 15 feet with water, sewer, and electric connections.
Expect quiet-hour enforcement and dry-camping rules at state parks. Pennsylvania state parks enforce quiet hours overnight, and alcohol is prohibited in most areas. Cell service is generally reliable in Espy and Bloomsburg but drops off in the hills north of town.

weather.gov/ctp/I've never rented an RV before. Is Espy, PA a good place to start?
Espy, PA is honestly one of the friendliest places in the Northeast for a first time renting an RV. The roads around Columbia County are wide, traffic is light outside of Bloomsburg University move-in week, and Interstate 80 has long, gentle grades rather than the white-knuckle climbs you'd hit further west. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, water system, slide-outs, and dump procedure, and you can text them anytime during your trip. Choose a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer for the easiest learning curve. By the time you reach Knoebels for funnel cake, you'll feel like a pro.

Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the protection package does not extend there. The Sheetz on Route 11 in Bloomsburg and the Pilot off I-80 Exit 232 in Mifflinville are the most reliable nearby fill-up stops with RV-friendly lanes.
