Campgrounds near Exeter, Pennsylvania
Exeter sits in the Wyoming Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania, along the Susquehanna River between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. The area gives RV travelers quick access to two well-run state park campgrounds, a private full-hookup Pocono option, and the trailheads that feed the Lehigh and Lackawanna river corridors.
The closest developed campground is Frances Slocum State Park, a 1,035-acre park in Luzerne County built around a horseshoe-shaped, 165-acre lake popular for boating and fishing. North of Exeter, the 1,445-acre Lackawanna State Park sits ten miles north of Scranton, with the 198-acre Lackawanna Lake surrounded by picnic areas and multi-use trails winding through forest. Highland Campgrounds and Benton Hills Mobile Home Park round out closer-in options for shorter stays or longer-term parking.
For Pocono access, Lehigh Gorge Campground in White Haven offers family-friendly camping along the Lehigh River in the Pocono Mountains and has been family owned for decades. It is a natural staging point for whitewater trips, the D&L Trail, and Hickory Run State Park.
Things to do near Exeter
Water recreation drives most trips. Frances Slocum offers boating and fishing on its 165-acre lake, and lake swimming is not permitted, so the park pool is the designated swim option. At Lackawanna State Park, boating, fishing, mountain biking, and swimming are the main recreation activities.
Trails suit a range of ages. Frances Slocum has nearly 14 miles of hiking trails, and Lackawanna adds about 15 miles of multi-use trails shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, plus additional hiking-only miles. Cyclists often base at Lehigh Gorge Campground to ride the rail-trail through Lehigh Gorge State Park.
Off-site, families can add whitewater rafting on the Lehigh, a day in Jim Thorpe, or Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton.

The state park campgrounds run a defined season. At Frances Slocum, a 100-site campground is available from mid-April to mid-October. At Lackawanna, the campground opens the second Friday in April and closes the third Sunday in October. Outside those windows, private options such as Lehigh Gorge Campground and Highland Campgrounds are the primary RV choices, and Lehigh Gorge operates on an extended season.
Summer is peak. The Frances Slocum campground can get busy during peak season, especially in the summer, and holiday weekends at Lackawanna fill early. Book electric and full-hookup sites well ahead for July and August, and expect the pool and lake beaches to be crowded on hot weekends.
Spring and fall trade warmth for elbow room. May brings wildflowers and cool nights, and September through early October delivers foliage across the Endless Mountains with lower demand. Lackawanna allows a maximum camping period of 14 consecutive days in the summer season and 21 consecutive days in the off-season, which suits longer shoulder-season stays.

How to book campgrounds near Exeter
Pennsylvania state parks use a single reservation system run through DCNR. Reservations can be made online for day use and overnight facilities, or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival.
Booking rules vary slightly by site type. Standard sites at Lackawanna and Frances Slocum can be reserved up to 11 months ahead, while some site categories, such as organized group tenting, require booking at least 3 days ahead of arrival. Limited first-come, first-served sites may also be available, and arriving campers should register with the park office or camp host before setting up.
Private campgrounds book directly. Contact Lehigh Gorge Campground, Highland Campgrounds, and Benton Hills Mobile Home Park by phone or their websites for availability, hookup type, and rig-length limits.
What to expect on site
State park sites are wooded and modern rather than resort-style. Frances Slocum has 85 tent or trailer sites, some ADA accessible and some with electric hookups, plus 15 walk-in tent sites. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring, and the campground has flush toilets, showers, drinking water, a sanitary dump station, and a boat launch. Camping pad lengths run roughly 22 to 64 feet, so check the equipment guide before choosing a spot.
Lackawanna's modern campground has full-hookup, electric, non-electric, pet-friendly, and walk-to sites, with modern restrooms, warm showers, and a sanitary dump station. Pets are allowed on the Fox Run and Maple Lane loops, and the ADA-accessible campsite, cottage, and shower house are in the Carpenter Town loop. A phased shower house rehabilitation is underway, so some sites may be blocked from reservations while other loops remain open.
RV sites at Lehigh Gorge Campground offer full hookups with water, electric, sewer, cable TV, and WiFi, plus an on-site camp store. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania state parks, so download maps before arrival.

Delivery fees are usually based on round-trip mileage from the host's location. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on your specific host and insurance coverage, so message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm. Expect a Class C motorhome to average 8 to 10 miles per gallon and a travel trailer setup (truck plus trailer) to land around 10 to 13 MPG. Pennsylvania gas typically runs in the mid-$3 range per gallon. For a 300-mile weekend loop through Ricketts Glen and back, budget roughly $100 to $150 in fuel.
